Eps Steering Column

Steering wheel motions are converted into voltage signals by a torque sensor with a torsion rod (6) via a steering shaft and transmitted to the EPS control unit. The torque sensor consists of a potentiometer with main and auxiliary circuits, each with their own voltage supply. The signals from the main and auxiliary potentiometer circuits are monitored constantly and compared with one another. If the signals from the two circuits vary from one another by more than a defined tolerance, the EPS control unit deactivates the system.

The EPS steering column consists of the following components:

  • Column tube
  • Steering shaft
  • Bracket
  • Worm gear with friction clutch
  • Electric motor
  • Torque sensor with torsion rod

The steering assistance torque of the electric motor (5) is applied to the steering shaft (5) by a worm gear with friction clutch (4). The electric motor is coupled to the steering shaft and is synchronised with the steering movements. The worm gear is not self-locking. If the electric steering assistance malfunctions, the electric motor follows the steering, which continues to operate manually. The ability to steer the vehicle is retained.

7.1.4 Eps Steering Column

A friction clutch (4) between the electric motor and the worm gear protects it against dangerous torque peaks, caused by, for example, contact with the pavement, turning the steering rapidly to the mechanical stops, etc. The friction clutch reacts in this type of situation and thus protects the steering from damage.
