The parking aid uses ultrasonic sensors in the rear of the vehicle to detect objects and obstacles. The system gives an acoustic warning of the distance between the vehicle and an obstacle. The parking aid will help the driver to drive into and out of a parking space and avoid damage to the front and rear of the vehicle. It is an independent system and is intended to be an aid, not a protective system.

The parking aid module calculates the distances with the aid of sensors, triggers an acoustic alarm and monitors the system. The control unit is installed at the rear of the vehicle and is connected to the REC.

The ultrasonic sensors are housed in the rear panelling of the vehicle.

The PAS can be deactivated by means of a button in the instrument panel. When the ignition has been switched ON, the PAS is inactive. The front system can now be activated separated via the button.

The button has a status control indicator. The button is read by the IPC, the parking aid is activated via the CAN. After activation, the IPC switches on the control indicator in "Measure" and "Presentation" mode.

A separate speaker is used for the rear sensors; this is installed in the headlining, in front of the rear window frame. There are three different modes for parking aid operation:

  • Wait mode: The parking aid is not activated, is gathering information on the bus and is waiting for the mode to change.
  • Measure mode: The sensors are active, the parking aid is calculating distances between the vehicle and obstacle. However, no information about distance is being given to the driver.
  • Present mode: The parking aid is being used, all functions are active. The driver receives the information acoustically.

The system can change mode automatically. The following may cause a mode change:

  1. 1. Vehicle speed
  2. 2. Reverse gear has been engaged
  3. 3. An object is detected which is near to the vehicle
  4. 4. A trailer is connected to the vehicle

The system detects objects approximately 0 to 150 cm behind the vehicle, the detection range widthways is respectively approx. 20 cm next to the vehicle. At a distance of 0 - 50 cm, the detection range is respectively 60 cm next to the vehicle. Vertically, the detection range is around 15 to 120 cm.

The acoustic warning system is able to indicate distances and also alert the driver to system faults.

The pulsating warning buzzers differ. The warning buzzers change as distance increases and decreases. Shortly before the object comes into contact with the vehicle, the warning buzzer switches to a continuous tone.

A short bleep is heard when the system is switched on (4-channel system only).

The frequency of the system is approx. 1300 Hz.
