| CAUTION | Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the electric engine coolant fans in order to help prevent personal injury. These fans are electric and can turn on whether or not the engine is running. The fans can start automatically with the ignition in the ON position. |
| CAUTION | Under some conditions, the ethylene glycol engine coolant is combustible. In order to help avoid being burned, DO NOT spill the antifreeze or the coolant on the exhaust system or the hot engine parts. |
Note. When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner at 30,000 miles or 24 months.
Note. Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Drain the coolant to a level below the thermostat. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-54804-S24423494562001011700000).
- Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the thermostat housing. (Scheme 5)
- Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. (Scheme 6) Remove the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat and the gasket. (Scheme 7) Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
- Install the thermostat and the gasket. Install the thermostat housing to the intake manifold. Install the bolts to the thermostat housing. Apply RTV sealer (GM P/N 1052366), to the bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-54804-S40544927202001011700000).
- Install the radiator inlet hose to the thermostat housing. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Tighten to specification.
- Refill the coolant. In order to properly fill a system that has been completely drained, requires the use of the air bleed vents. Start and run the engine. After the engine reaches normal operating temperature, check for coolant leaks.
