Removal
Note. The preferred method of engine removal is to remove the powertrain assembly out bottom of vehicle. If necessary equipment is not available, use alternate removal procedure, removing engine out top of vehicle. Only the first procedure is furnished.
- This procedure involves removing engine, transaxle, steering rack and engine frame as an assembly out bottom of vehicle. Disconnect battery. Relieve fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-54816-S16716511482001011700000) . Remove air cleaner inlet duct. Drain engine coolant. Drain engine oil.
- Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect fuel feed and return lines. Disconnect vacuum harness at rear of intake manifold. Disconnect throttle cable and cruise control cable. Disconnect engine main wiring harness from firewall connector.
- Disconnect coolant hoses from surge tank. Disconnect upper radiator hose from coolant crossover. Disconnect lower radiator hose from thermostat housing. Disconnect upper transaxle cooler hose from radiator. Disconnect lower transaxle cooler hose from transaxle.
- Disconnect heater hoses from coolant pipes at rear end of engine. Disconnect vacuum hose from brake booster. Remove shift cable bracket from transaxle. Disconnect shift cable from lever on transaxle. Remove vacuum reservoir. Disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors from cruise control servo.
- Support engine from above with Engine Support Fixture (J-28467). Disconnect positive battery cable from junction block. Remove through-bolt from torque axis mount. Remove front engine mount bolts from torque axis mount bracket, and set mount aside. Disconnect negative battery cable from cylinder block.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels and splash shields. Disconnect electrical connector from steering gear. Separate right steering knuckle from lower control arm at ball joint. Disconnect tie rod end from right steering knuckle. Remove right axle shaft from hub assembly.
- Remove pinch bolt securing steering intermediate shaft to steering rack. Separate left steering knuckle from lower control arm at ball joint. Disconnect tie rod end from left steering knuckle. Remove left axle shaft from hub assembly. Disconnect or remove exhaust system components as necessary.
- Disconnect engine oil cooler hoses from adapter. If separating engine from transaxle after engine frame assembly removal, remove braces securing engine to transaxle, flexplate cover, and torque converter bolts.
- Remove oil cooler adapter from cylinder block. Disconnect A/C hoses and muffler from A/C compressor. Put a heavy table on rollers under engine frame assembly. Remove left transaxle mount. Release engine support from above. Remove engine frame bolts. Raise vehicle away from engine frame assembly. Remove engine from engine frame assembly.
Installation
- Install engine to transaxle (if separated). Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-54816-S08840240192001011700000) table. Install torque converter bolts, flexplate cover, and braces securing engine to transaxle.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Roll engine frame assembly (on heavy table) under engine compartment. Lower vehicle. Install bolts securing engine frame to body. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Relieve fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-54816-S16716511482001011700000) . Remove intake manifold cover (decorative shield) from above intake manifold. Disconnect air intake duct from throttle body. Disconnect transaxle vent hose and shift cable at bracket. Disconnect electrical connectors from throttle position sensor and idle air control valve.
- Disconnect accelerator cable and cruise control cable at throttle body. Disconnect spark plug wires from plugs in left cylinder head. Disconnect coolant hoses at throttle body and surge tank. Disconnect EGR pipe and crankcase ventilation pipe from throttle body spacer. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from intake manifold.
- Disconnect fuel rail ground wire from right cylinder head. Disconnect fuel line quick-connect fittings at fuel rail. Disconnect fuel rail bracket at EGR valve. Disconnect PCV hose from intake manifold. Disconnect fuel injector harness main connector. Remove bolts/studs and intake manifold.
Note. Gaskets are secured to intake manifold with a snap lock. If plastic housing or rubber seals are not damaged, reuse gaskets.
| CAUTION | If throttle body was removed, DO NOT reuse old "O" ring seal. DO NOT apply silicone lubricant to "O" ring seal. |
If throttle body was removed, position NEW throttle body "O" ring seal on throttle body with petroleum jelly. Install intake manifold. Tighten intake manifold bolts to specification in several phases (start with inner bolts and work outward). See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
