Inspection, Repair and Replacement

Before repairing or replacing, thoroughly inspect parts. Inspect new replacement parts in the same way, and replace if necessary.

INSPECTION

Perform inspection as follows after removal, replacement or installation of camshaft or valve-related parts, or if there are unusual engine conditions regarding valve clearance.

  1. Remove rocker cover. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-605933-S31436862372014032500000) ".
  2. Measure the valve clearance with the following procedure: Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. Rotate crankshaft pulley (2) clockwise and align TDC mark (no paint) (A) to timing indicator (1) on front cover. At the same time, check that both intake and exhaust cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder face inside (<--) as shown in the figure below. If the lobes do not face inside, rotate the crankshaft pulley 360 degrees to align as shown in the figure below. Use a feeler gauge (A) to measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft. Valve clearance: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". Refer to the figure. Using a feeler gauge, measure the valve clearances at locations marked "x" in the table below (also shown with black arrow (<--) in the figure below). Measuring position No. 1 CYL. No. 2 CYL. No. 3 CYL. No. 4 CYL. No. 1 cylinder at compression TDC EXH x x INT x x Set No. 4 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. Rotate crankshaft pulley (2) one revolution (360 degrees) and align TDC mark (no paint) (A) to timing indicator (1) on front cover. Refer to the figure. INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL

Inspect air duct (inlet) and air duct for cracks, tears, or breaks.

Replace air duct (inlet) and air duct if any problems are found.

  1. Start engine and raise engine speed to check for exhaust leaks.

Clean debris from oil pan (lower) and from the strainer.

INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION

  1. Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels, including engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to " «FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS»(ref-605940-S11091129442014032500000) ".
  2. Use procedure below to check for fuel leakage.
  3. Turn ignition switch ON (with engine stopped). With fuel pressure applied to fuel piping, check for fuel leakage at connection points.
  4. Start engine. With engine speed increased, check again for fuel leakage at connection points.
  5. Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration. NOTE: If hydraulic pressure inside timing chain tensioner drops after removal and installation, slack in the guide may generate a pounding noise during and just after engine start. However, this is normal. Noise will stop after hydraulic pressure rises.
  6. Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, exhaust gas, or any oils/fluids including engine oil and engine coolant.
  7. Bleed air from passages in lines and hoses, such as in cooling system.
  8. After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to specified level, if necessary.

Scheme 25: Oil Filter
  1. Check that there is no foreign material on the oil filter (1) and check it for clogging.
  2. Check the oil filter for damage.
  3. If there is some damage, replace the oil filter, the plug, and the washer as a set. CAUTION: Do not reuse the washer.

Scheme 26: Camshaft Runout
  1. Put V-block on a precise flat table, and support No. 2 and 5 journals of camshaft. CAUTION: Do not support No. 1 journal (on the side of camshaft sprocket) because it has a different diameter from the other four locations.
  2. Set a dial indicator vertically to No. 3 journal.
  3. Turn camshaft to one direction, and measure the camshaft runout on the dial indicator. (Total indicator reading) Standard and Limit: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ".
  4. If it exceeds the limit, replace camshaft.

  1. Measure the camshaft cam height with a micrometer (A). Standard and Limit Intake: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". Exhaust Cam wear limit:: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ".
  2. If wear exceeds the limit, replace camshaft. Camshaft Journal Oil Clearance CAMSHAFT JOURNAL DIAMETER Measure the outer diameter of camshaft journal with a micrometer (A). Standard:: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ".

  1. Tighten camshaft bracket bolts to the specified torque. Refer to " «INSTALLATION»(ref-605933-S01847694962014032500000) " for the tightening procedure.
  2. Measure inner diameter (b) of camshaft bracket with a bore gauge (A). Standard: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". CAMSHAFT JOURNAL OIL CLEARANCE
  3. (Oil clearance) = (Camshaft bracket inner diameter) - (Camshaft journal diameter) Standard and Limit: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ".
  4. If it exceeds the limit, replace either or both camshaft and cylinder head.

Note. Camshaft brackets cannot be replaced as single parts, because they are machined together with cylinder head. Replace whole cylinder head assembly.

  1. Install camshaft in cylinder head. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-605933-S03169890402014032500000) " for tightening procedure.
  2. Install a dial indicator (A) in thrust direction on front end of camshaft. Measure the camshaft end play on the dial indicator when camshaft is moved forward/backward (in direction to axis). Standard and Limit: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". Measure the following parts if out of the standard. Dimension "A" for cylinder head No. 1 journal bearing Standard: 4.000 - 4.030 mm (0.1574 - 0.1586 in) Dimension "B" for camshaft thrust Standard: 3.877 - 3.925 mm (0.1526 - 0.1545 in) Refer to the standards above, and then replace camshaft and/or cylinder head.

  1. Put V-block on precise flat table, and support No. 2 and 5 journals of camshaft. CAUTION: Do not support No. 1 journal (on the side of camshaft sprocket) because it has a different diameter from the other four locations.
  2. Measure the camshaft sprocket runout with a dial indicator (A). (Total indicator reading) Limit: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in)

  1. If it exceeds the limit, replace camshaft sprocket. Valve Lifter Check if surface of valve lifter has any wear or cracks.
  2. If anything above is found, replace valve lifter. Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". Valve Lifter Clearance VALVE LIFTER OUTER DIAMETER
  3. Measure the outer diameter of valve lifter with a micrometer (A). Standard: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". VALVE LIFTER HOLE DIAMETER Measure the diameter of valve lifter hole of cylinder head with an inside micrometer (A). Standard: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ". VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE
  4. (Valve lifter clearance) = (Valve lifter hole diameter) - (Valve lifter outer diameter) Standard: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-605933-S21869994452014032500000) ".
  5. If out of the standard, referring to the each standard of valve lifter outer diameter and valve lifter hole diameter, replace either or both valve lifter and cylinder head.

Inspection of Camshaft Sprocket Oil Groove

CAUTIONPerform this inspection only when DTC P0011 or P0014 is detected in self-diagnostic results of CONSULT and it is directed according to inspection procedure of Engine Control article. Refer to " DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE " (P0011) or " DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE " (P0014). Check when engine is cold so as to prevent burns from the splashing engine oil.

Note. This section provides the inspection method of oil passage of cam sprocket on the intake side. For oil passage on the exhaust side, the inspection procedure must be changed as instructed below

Step 3: Remove exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " EXPLODED VIEW ".

Step 4: Crank engine, and then check that engine oil comes out from exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve hole (A). End crank after checking.

Perform the following inspection if engine oil does not come out from exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve oil hole of the cylinder head.

Step 5

  1. Remove oil filter, and then clean it. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-605933-S40974854352014032500000) ".
  2. Clean oil groove between oil strainer and exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-605933-S40974854352014032500000) ".

Step 6: Remove components between exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (EXH), and then check each oil groove for clogging.

  1. Check engine oil level. Refer to " «INSPECTION»(ref-605939-S03212845052014032500000) ".
  2. Perform the following procedure so as to prevent the engine from being unintentionally started while checking. Release the fuel pressure. Refer to " «WORK PROCEDURE»(ref-605934-S17108709862014032500000) ". Remove intake manifold. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-605933-S32978347962014032500000) ". Disconnect ignition coil and injector harness connectors. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-605933-S07534786442014032500000) ".
  3. Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-605933-S40974854352014032500000) ".
  4. Crank engine, and then check that engine oil comes out from intake valve timing control solenoid valve hole (A). End crank after checking. WARNING: Be careful not to touch rotating parts (drive belts, idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley, etc.). CAUTION: Prevent splashing by using a shop cloth to prevent injury from splashing engine oil and so as to prevent engine oil contamination. Use a shop cloth to prevent engine oil from being splashed to engine and vehicle. Especially be careful not to spill engine oil to rubber parts of drive belts, engine mounting insulator, etc. Wipe engine oil off immediately if it is splashed.
  5. Perform the following inspection if engine oil does not come out from intake valve timing control solenoid valve oil hole of the cylinder head. Remove oil filter, and then clean it. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-605939-S00469918352014032500000) ". Clean oil groove between oil strainer and intake valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " «ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM»(ref-605939-S37063936352014032500000) ".
  6. Remove components between intake valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (INT), and then check each oil groove for clogging. Clean oil groove if necessary. Refer to " «ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM»(ref-605939-S37063936352014032500000) ".
  7. After inspection, installation of components is in the reverse order of removal

  1. Remove camshafts. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-605933-S03169890402014032500000) ".
  2. Remove valve lifters. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-605933-S03169890402014032500000) ".
  3. Rotate crankshaft, and set piston with valve oil seal to be removed to TDC. This will prevent the valve from dropping into cylinder. CAUTION: When rotating crankshaft, be careful to avoid scarring front cover with timing chain.
  4. Remove valve collet. Compress valve spring with Tool (A). Remove valve collet with a magnet hand (B). CAUTION: Be careful not to damage valve lifter holes. Tool number: KV10116200 (J-26336-B): KV10115900 (J-26336-20): KV10109220 (-)
  5. Remove valve spring retainer, valve spring and valve spring seat. Refer to " «DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY»(ref-605933-S27718448432014032500000) ".
  6. Remove valve oil seal with Tool (A). Tool number: KV10107902 (J-38959)

  1. Apply new engine oil to valve oil seal joint surface and seal lip.
  2. Press in valve oil seal to the height "H" shown with Tool (A). Height "H": 13.2 - 13.8 mm (0.520 - 0.543 in) Tool number: KV10115600 (J-38958)
  3. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
