AUTOLAMP SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Headlight Operation Ensure headlights turn on. If headlights are on, go to next step. If headlights do not turn on, diagnose headlight system. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8836-S19990921842000092600000) .
  2. Check Autolamp Operation Turn ignition on. Turn headlight switch to AUTO1 or AUTO2 position. Cover autolamp sensor. If headlights turn on, go to «SHUT-OFF DELAY INOPERATIVE»(ref-8836-S08844859102000092600000) . If headlights do not turn on, go to next step.
  3. Check Ignition Power Turn ignition off. Disconnect autolamp control unit harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage between ground and autolamp control unit harness connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/Green wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8836-S19990921842000092600000) . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuses and wiring harness. Repair as necessary.
  4. Check Control Unit Ground Circuit Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and autolamp control unit harness connector terminal No. 22 (Black wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8836-S19990921842000092600000) . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness or connectors. Repair as necessary.
  5. Check Autolamp Sensor Reconnect autolamp control module harness connector. Disconnect autolamp sensor (photo diode) harness connector. Connect DVOM positive lead to sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Green wire) and negative lead to sensor terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). Continuity should exist. Reverse DVOM leads. Continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, check circuit between sensor and autolamp control unit. Repair as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8836-S19990921842000092600000) . If continuity is not as specified, replace autolamp sensor.

SHUT-OFF DELAY INOPERATIVE

  1. Check Autolamp Operation Turn ignition off. Disconnect headlight switch harness connector. Connect DVOM between headlight switch terminals No. 7 (Black wire) and No. 9 (Blue/White wire). Turn headlight switch to OFF position. Resistance should be 31-35 ohms. Turn switch to AUTO1 position. Resistance should be 516-517 ohms. Turn switch to AUTO2 position. Resistance should be 1947-2145 ohms. If resistance readings are as specified, go to next step. If resistance readings are not as specified, replace headlight switch.
  2. Check Ignition Switch ON Signal Circuit Turn ignition off. Disconnect autolamp control module harness connector. Using DVOM, check voltage between ground and autolamp control module harness connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/Green wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8836-S19990921842000092600000) . If battery voltage is present, replace autolamp control module. If battery voltage is not present, check circuit between fuse and autolamp control unit. Repair as necessary.
