Removal

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49048-S06862619232001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Set cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Marks on crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing should align; marks on camshaft sprockets and timing belt rear cover should also align. see scheme 11 Camshaft keyway should be at 12 o'clock position.
  2. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49048-S03144691312001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Drain coolant by removing drain plugs from both sides of cylinder block. Remove distributor cap, wires and distributor. DO NOT rotate distributor shaft after removing distributor.
  3. Remove intake manifold collector(s) and intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-49048-S05501864502001011500000). While preventing camshaft from turning, remove camshaft sprocket bolts and camshaft sprockets.
  4. Remove rear timing belt cover. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifolds. Remove cylinder head covers. Remove accessory drive units and brackets if necessary. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 or 3 steps, in reverse order of tightening sequence. (Scheme 8)
  5. Remove cylinder head bolts. Remove cylinder head with exhaust manifold attached. To remove exhaust manifold from cylinder head, remove exhaust manifold bolts in sequence. see scheme 7 To remove rocker arm shaft assembly, see «ROCKER ARM SHAFT ASSEMBLY»(ref-49048-S10386050622001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Installation

  1. Set cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Marks on crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing should align; marks on camshaft sprockets and timing belt rear cover should also align. see scheme 11
  2. Camshaft keyway should be at 12 o'clock position. Install camshaft sprocket marked R3 to right camshaft. Install camshaft sprocket marked L3 to left camshaft.
  3. Ensure cylinder head and cylinder block mating surfaces are clean. Install gasket and cylinder head. Oil cylinder head bolt threads and washers. Install head bolts. (Scheme 8) Tighten bolts in sequence. Tighten in steps to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49048-S31724110732001011500000).
  4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. Before installing distributor, ensure mark on distributor shaft aligns with protruded mark on distributor housing, and rotor is correctly positioned. (Scheme 9)

CAUTIONIf cylinder head is installed and timing belt is disconnected, DO NOT rotate camshaft or crankshaft; valves will contact pistons, resulting in bent valves.

Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove oil pump housing (front cover). See OIL PUMP . Pry out oil seal.

Apply engine oil to NEW seal. Drive seal into oil pump housing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
