Inspection, Repair and Replacement
Before repairing or replacing, thoroughly inspect parts. Inspect new replacement parts in the same way, and replace if necessary.
INSPECTION
Perform inspection as follows after removal, replacement or installation of camshaft or valve-related parts, or if there are unusual engine conditions regarding valve clearance.

- Remove rocker cover. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-675577-S28920989812014120500000) ".
- Measure the valve clearance with the following procedure: Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. Rotate crankshaft pulley (2) clockwise and align TDC mark (no paint) (A) to timing indicator (1) on front cover. At the same time, check that both intake and exhaust cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder face inside ( <==) as shown in the figure. If the lobes do not face inside, rotate the crankshaft pulley 360 degrees to align as shown below. Using suitable tool (A) measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft. Valve clearance: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-675577-S39361762992014120500000) ". Measure the valve clearances at locations marked "x" [locations indicated with ( )] as shown using suitable tool. Measuring position No. 1 CYL. No. 2 CYL. No. 3 CYL. No. 4 CYL. No. 1 cylinder at compression TDC EXH x x INT x x Set No. 4 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. Rotate crankshaft pulley (2) one revolution (360 degrees) and align TDC mark (no paint) (A) to timing indicator (1) on front cover. Measure the valve clearances at locations marked "x" [locations indicated with ( <==)] as shown using suitable tool. Measuring position No. 1 CYL. No. 2 CYL. No. 3 CYL. No. 4 CYL. - If out of the specifications, adjust as necessary. Refer to " «ADJUSTMENT»(ref-675577-S38058475952014120500000) ".
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Inspect air duct (inlet) and air duct for cracks, tears, or breaks.
Replace air duct (inlet) and air duct if any problems are found.
- Start engine and raise engine speed to check for exhaust leaks.

Clean debris from oil pan (lower) and from the strainer.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
- Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels, including engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to " «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS»(ref-675584-S23480474382014120500000) ".
- Use procedure below to check for fuel leakage.
- Turn ignition switch ON (with engine stopped). With fuel pressure applied to fuel piping, check for fuel leakage at connection points.
- Start engine. With engine speed increased, check again for fuel leakage at connection points.
- Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration. NOTE: If hydraulic pressure inside timing chain tensioner drops after removal and installation, slack in the guide may generate a pounding noise during and just after engine start. However, this is normal. Noise will stop after hydraulic pressure rises.
- Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, exhaust gas, or any oils/fluids including engine oil and engine coolant.
- Bleed air from passages in lines and hoses, such as in cooling system.
- After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to specified level, if necessary.

- Check that there is no foreign material on the oil filter (1) and check it for clogging.
- Check the oil filter for damage.
- If there is some damage, replace the oil filter, the plug, and the washer as a set. CAUTION: Do not reuse the washer.

Scheme 27: Camshaft Runout
- Put V-block on a precise flat table, and support No. 2 and 5 journals of camshaft. CAUTION: Do not support No. 1 journal (on the side of camshaft sprocket) because it has a different diameter from the other four locations.
- Set a suitable tool vertically to No. 3 journal.
- Turn camshaft to one direction, and measure the camshaft runout using suitable tool. (Total indicator reading) Standard and Limit: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-675577-S39361762992014120500000) ".
- If it exceeds the limit, replace camshaft.

- Measure the camshaft cam height using suitable tool (A). Standard and Limit Intake: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-675577-S39361762992014120500000) ". Exhaust Cam wear limit:: Refer to " «CAMSHAFT»(ref-675577-S39361762992014120500000) ".
- If wear exceeds the limit, replace camshaft.
Inspection of Camshaft Sprocket Oil Groove
| CAUTION | Perform this inspection only when DTC P0011 or P0014 is detected in self-diagnostic results of CONSULT and it is directed according to inspection procedure of EC article. Refer to " DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE " (P0011) or " DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE " (P0014). Check when engine is cold so as to prevent burns from the splashing engine oil. |
Note. This article provides the inspection method of oil passage of cam sprocket on the intake side. For oil passage on the exhaust side, the inspection procedure must be changed as instructed below: Step 3: Remove exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " EXPLODED VIEW ". Step 4: Crank engine, and then check that engine oil comes out from exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve hole (A). End crank after checking. Perform the following inspection if engine oil does not come out from exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve oil hole of the cylinder head. Step 5 Remove oil filter, and then clean it. Refer to " EXPLODED VIEW ". Clean oil groove between oil strainer and exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " EXPLODED VIEW ". Step 6: Remove components between exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (EXH), and then check each oil groove for clogging.

- Check engine oil level. Refer to " «INSPECTION»(ref-675583-S09967820252014120500000) ".
- Perform the following procedure so as to prevent the engine from being unintentionally started while checking. Release the fuel pressure. Refer to " «WORK PROCEDURE»(ref-675578-S29860079602014120500000) ". Remove intake manifold. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-675577-S04088089192014120500000) ". Disconnect ignition coil and injector harness connectors.
- Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-675577-S06901738552014120500000) ".
- Crank engine, and then check that engine oil comes out from intake valve timing control solenoid valve hole (A). End crank after checking. WARNING: Be careful not to touch rotating parts (drive belts, idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley, etc.). CAUTION: Prevent splashing by using a shop cloth to prevent injury from splashing engine oil and so as to prevent engine oil contamination. Use a shop cloth to prevent engine oil from being splashed to engine and vehicle. Especially be careful not to spill engine oil to rubber parts of drive belts, engine mounting insulator, etc. Wipe engine oil off immediately if it is splashed.
- Perform the following inspection if engine oil does not come out from intake valve timing control solenoid valve oil hole of the cylinder head. Remove oil filter, and then clean it. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-675583-S41735114402014120500000) ". Clean oil groove between oil strainer and intake valve timing control solenoid valve. Refer to " «ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM»(ref-675583-S37373787092014120500000) ".
- Remove components between intake valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (INT), and then check each oil groove for clogging. Clean oil groove if necessary. Refer to " «ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM»(ref-675583-S37373787092014120500000) ".
- After inspection, installation of components is in the reverse order of removal

- Remove camshafts. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-675577-S03960343582014120500000) ".
- Remove valve lifters. Refer to " «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-675577-S03960343582014120500000) ".
- Rotate crankshaft, and set piston with valve oil seal to be removed to TDC. This will prevent the valve from dropping into cylinder. CAUTION: When rotating crankshaft, be careful to avoid scarring front cover with timing chain.
- Remove valve collet, valve spring retainer, and valve spring using Tools. Tool number (A): KV1016200 (J-26336-A) Tool number (B): KV10109220 (-) Tool number (C): KV10115900 (J-26336-20) CAUTION: Do not damage valve lifter holes. Install Tool (A) in the center of valve spring retainer to press it. Tool number: KV10115900 (J-26336-20)
- Remove valve spring retainer, valve spring and valve spring seat. Refer to " «DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY»(ref-675577-S29588861382014120500000) ".
- Remove valve oil seal with Tool (A). Tool number: KV10107902 (J-38959)

- Apply new engine oil to valve oil seal joint surface and seal lip.
- Press in valve oil seal to the height "H" shown with Tool (A). Height "H": 13.2 - 13.8 mm (0.520 - 0.543 in) Tool number: KV10115600 (J-38958)
- Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
