HARD START OR NO START (CRANKS NORMALLY)

Note. Unless otherwise indicated, see appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article for testing procedures.

  1. Check fuel pump circuit.
  2. Check fuel injector circuits.
  3. Check battery and charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  4. Check Idle Air Control Valve-Auxiliary Air Control (IACV-AAC) valve circuit.
  5. Check Idle Air Control Valve-Fast Idle Control Device (IACV-FICD) (where equipped).
  6. Check ignition circuit.
  7. Check Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit.
  8. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit.
  9. Check Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor circuit.
  10. Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
  11. Check ECM power supply and ground circuits.
  12. Check fuel pressure regulator.
  13. Check start signal circuit.
  14. Check EVAP system.
  15. Check PCV system.
  16. Check ignition timing and idle speed adjustment. See «ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-135501) article.

  18. Visually inspect air intake system for leaks or restrictions.

ENGINE STALLS

  1. Check fuel pump circuit.
  2. Check fuel injector circuits.

  4. Check Idle Air Control Valve-Auxiliary Air Control (IACV-AAC) valve circuit.
  5. Check Idle Air Control Valve-Fast Idle Control Device (IACV-FICD) (where equipped).
  6. Check ignition circuit.
  7. Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
  8. Check Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit.
  9. Check front Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) circuit.
  10. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit.
  11. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor circuit.
  12. Check Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor circuit.
  13. Check Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit.
  14. Check ECM power supply and ground circuits.
  15. Check power steering pressure switch circuit.

  5. Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
  6. Check PCV system.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent fault, use following methods

  1. Gently vibrate component.
  2. Heat component.
  3. Freeze component.
  4. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  5. Spray component with water.
  6. Turn on all electrical accessories.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs.) Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
