Automatic Transmission: Removal & Installation Nissan 350Z I

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Be careful of the following

1. After installation is completed, adjust and check A/T position.

1. Loosen nut of control rod.
2. Place PNP switch and selector lever in "P" position.
3. While pressing lower' lever toward rear of vehicle (in P-position direction), tighten nut to specified torque. 23.0 - 29.4 N.m (2.4 - 2.9 kg-m, 17 - 21 ft-lb)

1. Place selector lever in "P" position, and turn ignition switch ON (engine stop).
2. Check that selector lever can be shifted to other than "P" position when brake pedal is depressed. Also check that selector lever can be shifted from "P" position only when brake pedal is depressed.
3. Move the selector lever and check for excessive effort, sticking, noise or rattle.
4. Confirm the selector lever stops at each position with the feel of engagement when it is moved through all the positions. Check whether or not the actual position the selector lever is in matches the position shown by the shift position Indicator and the transmission body.
5. The method of operating the lever to Individual positions correctly should be as shown in the figure.
6. When selector button is pressed in "P", "R", or "N" position with out applying forward/backward force to selector lever, check button operation for sticking.
7. Confirm the back-up lamps illuminate only when lever is placed in the "R" position. Confirm the back-up lamps does not illuminate when selector lever is pushed against "R" position in the "P" or "N" position.
8. Confirm the engine can only be started with the selector lever in the "P" and "N" positions.
9. Check that transmission is locked completely in "P" position.
10. When selector lever is set to manual shift gate, check that manual mode is displayed On combination meter.

Shift selector lever to "+" and "-" sides, and check that set shift position changes.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Refer to the figure below for air breather hose removal and installation procedure.

Be careful not to damage sensor edge.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove tower bar with power tool. Refer to " COIL SPRING & STRUT ASSEMBLY ".
3. Remove engine under cover with power tool.
4. Remove front suspension member with power tool. Refer to " FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER ".
5. Remove exhaust tube with power tool. Refer to " EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THREE WAY CATALYST ".
6. Remove propeller shaft. Refer to " REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ". CAUTION: Do not Impact, or damage propeller shaft tube.
7. Remove A/T control rod. Refer to " SHIFT CONTROL SYSTEM ".
8. Disconnect A/T unit assembly connector.
9. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from A/T. assembly.
10. Remove fluid cooler tube and A/T fluid charging pipe.
11. Plug up openings such as the fluid charging pipe hole, etc.
12. Remove air breather hose. Refer to " REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ".
13. Remove starter motor with power tool. Refer to " STARTER ".
14. Remove dust cover from converter housing part.
15. Turn crankshaft, and remove the four tightening bolts for drive plate and torque converter. CAUTION: When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.
16. Support A/T assembly with a jack. CAUTION: When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.
17. Remove engine rear member with power tool.
18. Remove bolts fixing A/T assembly to engine with power tool.
19. Remove A/T assembly from vehicle with a jack. Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping. Secure A/T assembly to a jack.

Install the removed parts in the reverse order of the removal, while paying attention to the following work.

1. When installing transmission to the engine, attach the fixing bolts in accordance with the following standard.
2. Align the positions of tightening bolts for drive plate with those of the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the bolts. Then, tighten the bolts with the specified torque. 44 - 58 N.m (4.5 - 5.9 kg-m, 33 - 42 ft-lb) CAUTION: When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine. When tightening the tightening bolts for the torque converter after fixing the crankshaft pulley bolts, be sure to confirm the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts. After converter is installed to drive plate, rotate crankshaft several turns and check to be sure that transmission rotates freely without binding.
3. Install crankshaft position sensor (POS). Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION"
4. After completing installation, check fluid leakage, fluid level, and the positions of A/T. Refer to " CHANGING A/T FLUID ", " ADJUSTMENT OF A/T POSITION ", " CHECKING OF A/T POSITION ".
