SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS
TIE ROD END BALL JOINT ROTATION TORQUE CHECK
Required Special Tools
- MB990326: Preload Socket
- MB991897 or MB992011: Ball Joint Remover
| CAUTION | To prevent the ball joint thread from being damaged during operation, just loosen the tie-rod end mounting nut from the ball joint (do not remove it.). To remove the ball joint, use the special tools. To prevent the special tool from dropping off, suspend it with a cord. |

Scheme 2
Scheme 3
- Install special tool MB991897 or MB992011 as shown in the illustration.
- Turn the bolt and knob to make the special tool jaws parallel, then hand-tighten the bolt. After tightening, check that the jaws are still parallel. NOTE: To adjust the special tool jaws to be parallel, set the knob as shown in the illustration so that it functions as a fulcrum of the jaws.
- Turn the bolt and disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Operate the ball joint stud to the right and to the left five times respectively, and install the nut to the stud. Use special tool MB990326 to measure the rotation torque of the ball joint. Standard value: 3.92 N.m (35 in-lb) or less
- If the measurement is greater than the standard value, replace the tie-rod end (Refer to «<< A >> TIE-ROD REMOVAL»(ref-593003-S03428769312014011300000).
- If any looseness or scraping feeling is experienced in the ball joint, even when the measurement is within the range of the standard value, the ball joint should be judged to be faulty. In this case, replace the tie-rod end (Refer to «<< A >> TIE-ROD REMOVAL»(ref-593003-S03428769312014011300000).
Scheme 4
- Park the vehicle on a level paved road, position the steering wheel in the straight ahead direction.
- Start the engine, and maintain the engine speed at 1, 000 ± 100 r/min.
- Position the spring scale on the circumference of the steering wheel, and measure the steering force at the time when the steering wheel is turned to right or left side (within the range of one and a half turns) from the center position. At the same time, verify that the steering force does not vary excessively in both directions. Standard value: Steering force: 27 N (6.1 pounds) or less Fluctuation band: 5.9 N (1.33 pounds) or less
- If not within the standard value, check and adjust the suspected components.
STEERING COLUMN SHAFT TOTAL ROTATION TORQUE CHECK
Required Special Tool
- MB990326: Preload Socket
Scheme 5
- Install the nut to the end of the steering column shaft. Then use special tool MB990326 to rotate the shaft at a rate of one turn per 4 to 6 seconds, and then measure the total rotation torque. Standard value: Total rotation torque: 1.77 N.m (16 in-lb) or less Torque fluctuation: 0.6 N.m (5 in-lb) or less NOTE: Rotate by 180 degrees in left and right directions from the neutral position, and measure the total rotation torque.
- When the measured value is not within the standard value, replace the steering column shaft (Refer to «STEERING COLUMN SHAFT TOTAL ROTATION TORQUE CHECK»(ref-593003-S32865746162014011300000).
PINION TOTAL ROTATIONAL TORQUE CHECK
Required Special Tool
- MB991006: Preload Socket
| CAUTION | When holding the steering gear in a vice, secure its mounting positions. If it is secured in any other place, the gear housing may become deformed or damaged. |
Scheme 6
- Using special tool MB991006, rotate the pinion gear at the rate of one rotation in approximately 4 to 6 seconds to check the total pinion torque. Standard value: Total rotational torque: 0.7 - 1.3 N.m (7 - 11 in-lb) Torque fluctuation: 0.7 N.m (6 in-lb) or less NOTE: When measuring, remove the bellows from the rack housing. Measure the pinion torque through the whole stroke of the rack.
- If not within the specification, replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY»(ref-593003-S04703271342014011300000).
Scheme 7
Required Special Tools
- MB992209: Bellows Band Clipping Tool
- MB992249: Variable Spanner
Scheme 8
Scheme 9
Scheme 10
- Move the bellows and pull the rack bar toward arrow direction shown in the illustration. CAUTION: Do not tighten the vise strongly in order not to damage the rack bar.
- Wrap rack bar with cloth in order not to damage, and fix the rack bar with a vise.
- Use special tool MB992249 to remove the tie-rod.
