JACKING & HOISTING

Note. Following illustrations are given to provide reference points only. Illustrations do not represent exact structure of vehicle frame, underbody, or body outline.

EMERGENCY JACKING

Points on outline of body were designated to be used specifically with vehicle jack. (Scheme 1) If using floor jack, or hoist at these points, use extreme care to avoid damaging outer body shell.

FLOOR JACK & HOIST

Following illustrations indicate points for jacking, and hoisting vehicle. These points are indicated by shaded areas on frame, and underbody. (Scheme 1)- (Scheme 5).

CAUTIONNever support vehicle by rear floor crossmember.

Diamante, Eclipse & Mirage

Camber is preset by manufacturer, and cannot be adjusted. On models with aluminum wheels, check camber using a bubble gauge and Gauge Attachment (MB991004). See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If camber is not within specification, replace damaged or bent suspension components.

Eclipse Spyder & Galant

Note. If camber adjustment required is greater than 1.5 degrees, check for bent or damaged suspension components, and replace as necessary.

  1. Check camber. See appropriate «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5273-S22519436792000081100000) table. If equipped with aluminum wheels, loosen drive axle nut, and install Wheel Alignment Gauge Attachment (MB991004). Tighten axle shaft nut to 197-254 ft. lbs. (267-345 N.m) for Eclipse Spyder, or 145-188 ft. lbs. (196-255 N.m) for Galant. Install bubble gauge.
  2. If camber is not within specification, estimate amount of adjustment required. Using the table, select camber adjusting bolts needed. (Scheme 6) Camber adjusting bolts can be identified by marks on bolt head. (Scheme 7) Set bolt installed by manufacturer can be identified by head mark "10".
  3. Replace strut-to-knuckle adjusting bolts with NEW selected bolts. Tighten nuts temporarily, and pull or push front axle to adjust camber. Pulling upper side of front axle to outside of vehicle, will increase camber. (Scheme 8) Pushing to inside will decrease camber. Tighten nuts to 203-239 ft. lbs. (275-324 N.m). Recheck camber.

Montero

Check camber. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (MONTERO) table. If camber is not within specification, adjust by increasing or decreasing thickness of adjusting shim between upper control arm shaft, and crossmember. (Scheme 9) Adjusting shims are available in.039" (1.0 mm) and.079" (2.0 mm) thicknesses.

Note. Standard shim thickness is 0.16" (4.0 mm). DO NOT use more than 3 shims at one location.

Scheme 9: Montero

Montero Sport

  1. Check camber. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (MONTERO SPORT)»(ref-5273-S08847579852000081100000) table. Standard camber value should be.42 degrees (-.08 to.92 degrees) for right side, and.90 degrees (.4 to 1.4 degrees) for left side. Difference between left, and right sides should be within one degree, and left side should be equal to or larger than right side.
  2. If camber is not within specification, remove shock absorber shaft mounting nuts, and compress shock absorber. Loosen upper control arm bolts, and nuts. (Scheme 9) Adjust camber by increasing or decreasing shims between upper control arm shaft and crossmember.
  3. Using the chart, calculate difference of measured value from standard value of camber and caster, to decide how many adjusting shims to increase or decrease. (Scheme 10) Adjusting shims are available in.04" (1.0 mm) and.08" (2.0 mm) thicknesses for front shim integral with rear shim, and.04" (1.0 mm) and.08" (2.0 mm) thicknesses for single shims.

3000GT

CAUTIONDO NOT allow weight of vehicle on wheel bearings when drive axle nut is loosened.
  1. Loosen drive axle nut and install Wheel Alignment Gauge Attachment (MB991004) to drive axle. Tighten nut to 166 ft. lbs. (225 N.m). Attach bubble gauge to attachment. Check camber. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (3000GT)»(ref-5273-S19988324312000081100000) table.
  2. If camber is not within specification, loosen eccentric cam nut on strut-to-knuckle upper mounting bolt. Rotate eccentric cam bolt to obtain correct camber. (Scheme 11) Each mark represents a change of.33 degree of camber. NOTE: Each camber mark also changes toe about.02" (.5 mm). Adjust toe-in after camber has been adjusted. Difference in camber between left and right should be within 1/2 degree.

  1. Check caster. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (MONTERO SPORT)»(ref-5273-S08847579852000081100000) table. Difference between left, and right side should be within.5 degree. If caster is not within specification, remove shock absorber shaft mounting nuts, and compress shock absorber. CAUTION: Difference in shim thickness between front and rear, must not exceed.16" (4.0 mm). DO NOT use more than 4 shims at one location.
  2. Loosen upper control arm mounting bolts and nuts. Adjust caster by increasing or decreasing shims between upper control arm shaft and crossmember. (Scheme 9) Using chart, calculate difference of measured value from standard value of camber and caster to decide how many adjusting shims to increase or decrease. (Scheme 10)

All Other Models

Caster is preset by manufacturer, and cannot be adjusted. Check caster. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If caster is not within specification, replace damaged or bent components.

Front

Note. On Eclipse Spyder models, rear wheel alignment should be performed prior to adjusting front toe-in.

Check front toe-in. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If front toe-in is not within specification, remove clips, and turn left and right tie rod turnbuckles same amount, but in opposite directions. Toe will move out as left turnbuckle is turned toward front of vehicle, and right turnbuckle is turned toward rear of vehicle. Recheck front toe-in.

Note. For each turn of left and right tie rod turnbuckles, toe-in changes about 1.08 degrees. Tie rod outer turnbuckles have left-hand threads. Ensure length of left and right tie rods are within .20" (5.0 mm) of each other.

Rear (Diamante & Eclipse Spyder)

Check rear toe-in. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If rear toe-in is not within specification, turn toe control arm mounting bolts left or right by equal amounts to adjust. (Scheme 12)or (Scheme 13). On left-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-out. On right-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-in. On Diamante models, adjustments made should be kept within 90 degrees of position indicated in illustration. (Scheme 13)

Rear (Eclipse & Galant)

Check rear toe-in. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If rear toe-in is not within specification, loosen nut, then turn toe control arm mounting bolt to adjust toe. (Scheme 14) On left-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-out. On right-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-in. Each graduation equals about.10" (2.5 mm).

Rear (Mirage)

Check rear toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (MIRAGE) table. If rear toe-in is not within specification, turn toe adjusting bolt to adjust. (Scheme 15) On left-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-in. On right-hand side, turning bolt clockwise increases toe-out. Each graduation equals about.10" (2.5 mm).

Rear (Montero & Montero Sport)

Rear toe-in is preset by manufacturer, and cannot be adjusted. Check rear toe-in. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. If rear toe-in is not within specification, replace damaged or bent components.

Rear (3000GT AWD)

Check rear toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS (3000GT) table. If rear toe-in is not within specification, turn assist link eccentric mounting bolts on crossmember side, equal amounts, on both sides. (Scheme 16) One graduation changes toe by about.19" (4.8 mm)

Note. Adjust camber prior to adjusting toe-in. If camber is adjusted, be sure to adjust toe-in.
