Timing Belt Replacement - 2.0l - SOHC Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII

MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

Manufacturer recommends the belt be replaced every 60,000 miles except in California, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. In California, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont, timing belt replacement is recommended, but not required, at 60,000 miles. In these states, replace timing belt at 100,000 miles (2002-04 models) or 105,000 (2005 models), unless previously changed.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Removal

1. Remove left undercover. Raise engine and transaxle assembly until its weight is off front engine mount, and support securely. Remove front engine mount and bracket.
2. Remove drive belts. Using Crankshaft Pulley Holder (MD998719) and End Yoke Holder (MB990767), remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley.
3. Remove generator belt tension adjustment bracket, power steering pump bracket support and engine support bracket. (Scheme 4)
4. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor electrical connector. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. CAUTION: Only rotate crankshaft clockwise.
5. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to align each timing mark and to set cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. (Scheme 5)
6. If timing belt is to be reused, mark rotation direction on belt. Loosen tensioner bolt. Insert a Phillips screwdriver into tensioner arm hole, and pry tensioner away from timing belt. Temporarily tighten tensioner bolt. Remove flange and timing belt.

Inspection

Inspect timing belt rubber backing for hardening or surface cracks. Check for cracks or peeling of canvas, cracks on belt sides or bottom of teeth. Check for abnormal wear on belt sides and teeth. Check for missing teeth. Check tensioner pulley for smooth rotation without noise or play.

Installation

1. Ensure timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 5) Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, water pump sprocket, camshaft sprocket, then tensioner. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise.
2. Loosen tensioner bolt 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 revolutions. Ensure timing marks are still aligned and teeth in each sprocket are engaged. 3. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. When tightening engine mount bolts, ensure weight of engine is on vehicle body.
