1974-84 (Ported EGR Valve)
With engine at normal operating temperature, raise engine speed 3000-3200 RPM. Disconnect vacuum hose to EGR valve. EGR diaphragm should lower. Reconnect vacuum hose to EGR valve. EGR diaphragm should rise. Allow engine to idle. Disconnected vacuum hose to EGR valve and plug hose. Apply vacuum to EGR valve. Engine idle speed should become unstable or stall. If EGR valve operates as indicated, EGR system is functioning properly.
1978-87 Carbureted (Dual EGR Valves)
- With engine cold, start engine and allow to idle. Observe sub-EGR valve and ensure it does not operate as engine speed is increased to 2500 RPM. If sub-EGR valve operates, thermovalve is defective.
- Allow engine to warm to normal operating temperature. Observe sub-EGR valve and ensure it does operate as engine speed is increased to 2500 RPM. If sub-EGR valve does not operate, sub-EGR valve or thermovalve is faulty.
- Disconnect Green-striped vacuum hose from carburetor nipple and attach a vacuum pump to hose. Manually pull on linkage of sub-EGR valve, and at same time apply 6 in. Hg. If idle becomes rough, main EGR valve is functioning properly.
- Connect a vacuum gauge to directly to carburetor nipple. Increase engine speed to about 3000 RPM. If vacuum is shown on gauge, system is functioning properly.
1983-85 Multiport Fuel Injection (Ported EGR Valve)
Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Disconnect Green-striped vacuum hose from injector mixer and connect a vacuum gauge to hose end. Apply 9.8 in. Hg (3.9 in. Hg on Galant). If engine runs rough or stalls, EGR system is functioning properly.
1986 Colt & Colt Vista (Ported EGR Valve)
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Disconnect Green-striped vacuum hose from carburetor and connect a vacuum gauge to hose end. Apply 20 in. Hg. If engine runs rough or stalls, EGR valve and thermovalve are functioning properly.
- With engine idling, remove White vacuum hose from Vacuum Regulator Valve (VRV). Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to VRV nipple. Apply 20 in. Hg. If no vacuum can be created, VRV is defective. If a slow vacuum leak is indicated, the VRV is functioning properly.
1986-88 Cordia & Tredia (Ported EGR Valve)
- With engine cold, start engine and allow to idle. Observe EGR valve and ensure it does not operate as engine speed is increased to 2500 RPM. If EGR valve operates, thermovalve is defective.
- Allow engine to warm to normal operating temperature. Observe EGR valve and ensure it operates (opens) as engine speed is increased to 2500 RPM. If EGR valve does not operate, EGR valve or thermovalve is defective.
- Disconnect EGR valve hose and connect a hand-held vacuum pump to EGR valve. With engine idling, apply 9.5 in. Hg. If vacuum holds and idle becomes unstable or engine stalls, EGR system is functioning properly.
1987 Colt, Colt Vista, Mirage, Raider, Ram-50, Montero & Pickup (Ported EGR Valve)
- Disconnect vacuum hose from throttle body and connect vacuum pump to hose end. Plug nipple where hose was connected to throttle body. With engine temperature at 113°F (45°C) or less and engine speed at 3500 RPM, apply vacuum to hose. If vacuum leaks from thermovalve, system is functioning properly.
- With engine temperature at 185-205°F (85-95°C) and engine idling, apply vacuum to hose. If idle does not change, and vacuum leaks down, system is functioning properly.
- Increase engine speed to 3500 RPM. Apply vacuum to hose. Vacuum should leak down until 3.25 in. Hg is reached. If system operates as indicated, system is functioning properly.
1987-88 All Others (Ported EGR Valve)
- Disconnect Green-striped vacuum hose from injection mixer and connect vacuum pump to hose end. With engine temperature at 140°F (60°C) or less and engine idling, apply vacuum to hose. If idle speed does not change and vacuum leaks down from EGR solenoid, system is functioning properly.
- With engine temperature at 185-205°F (85-95°C) and engine idling, apply 2.4 in. Hg to hose. If idle does not change, and vacuum holds, system is functioning properly.
- Apply 6.8 in. Hg. If vacuum holds and idle becomes unstable or engine stalls, EGR system is functioning properly.
1989-96 Colt Wagon 1.8L, Montero (A/T), Raider (A/T), Sigma, Van/Wagon & All Other Federal Models (Ported EGR Valve)
- Disconnect Green-striped hose from throttle body and connect a hand-held vacuum pump to hose end. Plug nipple where hose was connected to throttle body. With engine temperature at 122°F (50°C) or less, and engine idling, apply vacuum to hose. If idle does not change and vacuum leaks down, system is functioning properly.
- With engine temperature at 176-205°F (80-95°C) and engine idling, apply 2 in. Hg to hose. If idle does not change, and vacuum holds, system is functioning properly.
- Apply 7.7 in. Hg. If vacuum holds and idle becomes unstable or engine stalls, EGR system is functioning properly.
1989-96 Montero (M/T), Raider (M/T) & All Other California Models (Ported EGR Valve)
- Connect a vacuum tee into Green-striped hose from EGR valve and connect a hand-held vacuum pump to vacuum tee. With engine temperature at 68°F (20°C) or less and engine idling, snap throttle opened and closed. If no change in vacuum reading on vacuum pump gauge is detected, system is functioning properly.
- With engine temperature at 158°F (70°C) or greater and engine idling, snap throttle open to race engine. If vacuum is now indicated on vacuum pump gauge, system is functioning properly.
- Using a vacuum pump, apply specified vacuum to open EGR valve. See appropriate EGR VALVE SPECIFICATIONS table. If idle becomes unstable or engine stalls, EGR system is functioning properly.
