DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Crankcase ventilation system is designed to control the flow of crankcase gas and vapors into the intake manifold to be burned by the engine rather than being discharge into the atmosphere. System is a closed type and consists of a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, oil separator, and connecting hoses.

Under normal driving conditions, fresh air is mixed with blow-by gas and passes through the PCV valve to be burned by the engine. Under heavy acceleration or high-speed driving, intake manifold vacuum decreases and blow-by gases exceed PCV valve capacity. The gases are then routed through the breather hose into intake tube to be burned by the engine.

MAINTENANCE

Check and clean entire crankcase ventilation system every 5 years/50,000 miles. Check oil separator and hoses for leaks and clogging.

TURBOCHARGED MODELS

On turbocharged engines check oil separator and oil return pipe for clogging and leaks.

ALL OTHER MODELS

  1. With engine idling, remove PCV valve from valve cover and place finger over valve inlet. A strong vacuum should be felt.
  2. Turn ignition off and remove PCV valve from valve cover.
  3. Blow into threaded end of PCV valve. If air will not flow, remove PCV valve and hose and clean with appropriate solvent to remove obstruction. Retest after cleaning.
