Removal & Installation - Cooper: Overview MINI Cooper I

  1. Switch off ignition. Release clamp (1). (Scheme 23) Detach intake fitting from intake filter housing. Loosen screws (2). Release cable holders (3 and 4). Remove intake filter housing.
  2. Remove rubber seal (1). (Scheme 24) Press clips in direction of arrow and remove battery cover.
  3. Detach vent hose (1). (Scheme 25) Release screw (2). Detach battery negative lead. Release screw (3). Detach battery positive lead. Release screws (4). Remove battery retaining bracket. Lift out battery. Installation: Connect battery in reverse sequence. Connect battery positive lead first, followed by negative lead. Make sure both battery leads run at an angle of 90° to the battery container because they are routed through openings in the battery container cover. Initialize both power windows.
  4. Disconnect plug connector from EMS/DME control unit. Unlock plug connections outwards (2) and detach in direction of arrow (3). (Scheme 26) Release screws (1) of battery container. (Scheme 27) Remove inner fasteners (2) of battery container. Release wiring harness retaining clips (3) in base of battery container.
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels.
  6. Drain gear oil. See «SERVICING»(ref-169139) article.
  7. Remove screws (1) and threaded blind rivets (2) from wheel arch liner. (Scheme 28) Remove liner from wheel arch.
  8. Remove both drive shafts with steering stub carrier. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING RIGHT DRIVE SHAFT and REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT DRIVE SHAFT.
  9. Secure engine in installation position with special tool. See «SECURING ENGINE IN INSTALLATION POSITION»(ref-170605-S25189288222005011200000).
  10. Remove front axle carrier (without wheel alignment). See «FRONT SUSPENSION»(ref-168988) article.
  11. Unclip lines (3) and (4) from holder. Release screws (1) and remove top engine support bracket. (Scheme 29)
  12. Release bolts (1) and remove bottom engine carrier bracket. (Scheme 30)
  13. Release screws (1). Remove manifold heat shield. (Scheme 31)
  14. Release clips on stop/holder (1) and disconnect shift cable (2) from ball joint. (Scheme 32) Release screws (3) for shift cable stop and remove stop/holder (4) for gearshift assembly.
  15. Release screws (1). (Scheme 33) Remove clutch slave cylinder (2) from transmission.
  16. Detach plug connector (1) of reversing light switch. (Scheme 34)
  17. Detach line connection to brake booster from manifold and unclip from holder. Press ring downwards to expose line (1). (Scheme 35)
  18. Release screw (1). (Scheme 36) Release screws (2). Remove transmission mounting (3). Lower engine approx. 40 mm.
  19. Release screw (1). (Scheme 37) Remove wiring harness for oxygen sensors from clip (2). Remove starter motor heat shield. Pull transmission downwards and remove.
  20. Release starter motor connections (1 and 2). (Scheme 38) Remove wiring harness from transmission area. Note routing of wiring harness to starter motor.
  21. Release screws (1) and remove starter motor. (Scheme 39)
  22. Release screws (1). (Scheme 40) Remove holder (2) for endplate.
  23. Unfasten screws (1 and 2). (Scheme 41) Remove transmission.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Screws (2) on transmission oil sump are shorter than the other screws. (Scheme 41) Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Connect battery in reverse sequence. Connect battery positive lead first, followed by negative lead. Make sure both battery leads run at an angle of 90° to the battery container because they are routed through openings in the battery container cover. Initialize both power windows.
