The brake/shift interlock system consists of an actuator attached to the key interlock assembly and necessary wiring. The shift interlock actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, locking the floor mounted gearshift lever in the Park position. When the brake pedal is depressed, the shift interlock actuator is deactivated and the floor mounted gearshift lever can be moved out of the Park position.
An electronic shift interlock actuator, mounted at base of gearshift lever, locks gearshift lever in Park position until ignition switch is in ON position and brake pedal is depressed.
Escort, LS, Villager & ZX2
The shift interlock system prevents the gearshift lever from being moved out of the Park position by the shift interlock actuator, the Park range switch, and the ignition/shifter interlock cable that is connected to the ignition switch. The ignition switch must be in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. The brake pedal position is detected by the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE FUNCTION
Note. On models not listed, emergency override function can be performed by turning ignition switch to 1st position from OFF, towards ON position. Apply brake pedal and attempt to move gearshift lever.
Cougar
Ensure gearshift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver or similar item as an unlocking lever, and push backward on actuator and hold in position. (Scheme 219) If gearshift lever is moved back into Park position, it will re-lock.

Ensure gearshift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver to lift small access cover at corner of shift bezel. (Scheme 220) Insert a screwdriver vertically into access hole and push downward to release lock lever. Ensure gearshift lever is released from Park.

- Apply brake pedal and view brakelights. Do brakelights illuminate? If so, go to step 7. If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance in fuse No. 11 (15-amp), in Central Junction Box (CJB). Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, go to step 4. If not, go to next step.
- Disconnect Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch harness connector. Measure the resistance in battery feed circuit between BPP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 221) Is the resistance 10 k/ohms or less? If so, repair short to ground in battery feed circuit and test the system for normal operation. If not, go to next step.
- Measure the resistance in battery feed circuit between the output side of fuse No. 11 (15-amp) and the BPP switch harness connector terminal No. 1. (Scheme 222) Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, go to next step. If not, repair open in battery feed circuit and test the system for normal operation.
- Measure the resistance of the BPP switch while open (OFF) and closed (ON). (Scheme 223) Is the resistance of the switch greater than 10 k/ohms while OFF, and 5 ohms or less while ON? If so, go to next step. If not, replace BPP switch and test the system for normal operation. See «BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-140004-S11825150462002052100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect shift interlock actuator harness connector. Measure the resistance between shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 224) Is the resistance 10 k/ohms or less? If so, repair short to ground and test the system for normal operation. If not, go to next step
- Measure the resistance between the shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 1 and BPP switch harness connector terminal No. 2. (Scheme 225) Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, go to next step. If not, repair open in Light Green wire and test the system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure the voltage at the shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 3. (Scheme 226) Does battery voltage exist? If so, go to step 12. If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance in fuse No. 6 (10-amp). Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, go to step 11. If not, go to next step.
- Measure the resistance in ignition feed circuit between shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 3 and ground. see scheme 19 Is the resistance 10 k/ohms or less? If so, repair short to ground in ignition feed circuit and test the system for normal operation. If not, go to next step.
- Measure the resistance in Black/Orange wire between the output side of fuse No. 6 (10-amp) and the shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 3. see scheme 20 Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, go to next step. If not, repair open in Black/Orange wire and test system for normal operation.
- Measure the resistance in ground circuit between the shift interlock actuator harness connector terminal No. 2 and ground. see scheme 12 Is the resistance 5 ohms or less? If so, replace shift interlock actuator and test the system for normal operation. See «SHIFT INTERLOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-140004-S02147698232002051500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If not, repair open in ground circuit and test the system for normal operation.

SHIFT INTERLOCK & IGNITION RELAY
Note. Component testing procedures are provided to determine whether a component is good or bad. Testing information for each component includes a schematic, a view of the terminal locations and step-by-step test procedures. Terminal locations are identified by numbers or letters that may be on the component or next to it. The component connector must be removed before testing. To test a single circuit within the component, select that circuit under the column "Circuit To Test". If you wish to test the complete component, perform all tests. Connect the tester to the terminals shown in the 2nd column, and check the operation of the component using the results in the 3rd column.

Villager
Check the brake pedal free height. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch harness connector. Loosen the lock nut. Measure distance from brake pedal stopper to threaded end of stoplight switch. Switch height "A" should be 0.012-0.039" (0.30-1.00 mm). (Scheme 229) Tighten the lock nut. Reconnect the BPP switch harness connector. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Place the gearshift lever in the Park position. Loosen the transmission control selector dial bezel screws. Place a stiff wire (A) in the slider panel (B), and position the pointer on the slider panel (B) to align with the Park position on the transmission control selector dial bezel (C). see scheme 64 Tighten the transmission control selector dial bezel screws in the sequence shown. see scheme 65
