APPLICATION
| Model | Transmission |
| 3.0L & 3.8L | AX4N or AX4S/AXOD-E |
| 3.4L & 4.6L | AX4N |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
- Turn air suspension switch to OFF position (if equipped). Switch is located in luggage compartment. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Unplug electrical harness connectors from engine. Remove main wiring harness retaining bolt. Remove shift lever.
- Remove through-bolt from left-side motor mount strut. Secure wiring harness aside. Remove radiator sight shield. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. On Sable and Taurus, install Engine Lifting Bracket (D81L-6001-D) to left rear of cylinder head. Lifting bracket should be pre-installed on right front of cylinder head.
- On all models, install Engine Support Bar (D88L-6000-A) across shock towers. Attach support bar to engine. Raise engine enough to take pressure off of engine mounts. Remove dipstick. Disconnect power steering pump pressure and return line retaining bracket.
- Remove 4 torque converter housing bolts from top of transaxle. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Separate left-side tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove suspension height sensor. Disconnect brakeline support brackets. Remove retaining bolts from stabilizer bar. Disconnect lower control arm assemblies. Remove steering gear retaining nuts.
- Remove front exhaust pipe, converter assembly and mounting bracket. Remove 2 transaxle mount bolts. Remove 4 left-side engine support bolts and remove support. Remove power steering gear-to subframe retaining bolts and secure gear assembly to rear of engine compartment. Remove all subframe-to-engine mount bolts. Support subframe. Remove remaining subframe-to-body bolts and lower subframe.
- Position hydraulic jack under transaxle. Remove speedometer or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from transaxle. Remove transaxle-to-engine supports and transaxle mount. Remove starter and dust cover. Remove transaxle oil cooler retaining clips. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines using Cooler Line Disconnect Tool (T86P-77265-AH).
- Remove 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Pull CV joints from transaxle using a slide hammer, CV Joint Puller (T86P-3514-A1) and Extension (T86P-3514-A2). Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Separate transaxle from engine. Lower transaxle and remove from vehicle.
| CAUTION | DO NOT let puller contact speed sensor, or damage may result. |
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61311-S16654590022001100200000) . Install NEW circlip on axle shaft before installing. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid. See the TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article. DO NOT overfill.
- Slightly tighten mount bolts. Repeat procedure for right-side subframe assembly. After both sides are aligned, tighten subframe-to-body mount bolts. Check and adjust axle shaft positioning. See the AXLE SHAFT article in DRIVE AXLES section.
- Remove negative and positive battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove hood and cowl vent screens. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect necessary electrical connections. Disconnect shift cable from transaxle.
- Using appropriate fuel line disconnecting tool, disconnect oil cooler line from transaxle and install plugs into openings. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Disconnect wiring harness bracket from transaxle. Install Three-Bar Engine Support (014-00750) and Adapter Kit (014-00792).
- Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove front wheels. Remove axle shafts. See the AXLE SHAFT article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove 4 rear engine support-to-transmission bolts.
- Disconnect speedometer cable from vehicle speed sensor. Disconnect starter solenoid wires. Remove starter from transmission. Remove transmission housing cover. Remove 4 torque converter bolts. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove 2 lower transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove 2 right side engine bracket-to-transmission bolts. Separate transmission from engine block by carefully moving transmission rearward until enough clearance exists to remove transmission from engine compartment. Slowly lower transmission, ensuring no obstructions exist, and remove transmission from vehicle.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten torque converter drain plug and all bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fill transmission with appropriate transmission fluid. For fluid type, capacity and control cable or linkage adjustment, see the TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article.
