TRANSMISSION APPLICATION
| WARNING | Before removing engine/transmission assembly on compressed natural gas powered vehicles, see safety precautions in the COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION section. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
- Disconnect battery cables and remove battery. Secure radiator and fan assembly to upper radiator support with mechanic's wire. Remove air cleaner assembly and mounting bracket. Loosen front strut upper nuts 5 turns.
- Disconnect shift control cable and bracket. Remove Transmission Range (TR) sensor and transaxle harness. Install appropriate engine support fixture. Remove upper transaxle support insulator.
- Remove upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove air deflector below radiator. Remove lower radiator support-to-subframe bracket bolts. Remove exhaust components as necessary for transaxle removal.
- Remove bolts attaching accumulator drier to left front of subframe. Remove transaxle oil cooler lines from subframe. Disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Remove ball joint pinch bolts and separate lower control arms from steering knuckles. Remove front sway bar stabilizer links.
- Remove left and right-side motor mount through-bolts. Remove bumper cover braces from left and right side of subframe. Place appropriate hoist under subframe and remove 4 subframe-to-body bolts. Lower front of subframe enough to remove power steering hoses from steering gear. Remove front subframe.
- Disconnect Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor harness connector. Drain transaxle fluid. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines from transaxle and radiator. Remove oil cooler lines from vehicle. CAUTION: DO NOT damage threads on outer CV joint.
- Remove both front axle shaft nuts. Separate axle shafts from wheel hub bearings using appropriate hub puller/press. Disconnect right-side intermediate shaft bearing retainer bracket. Using pry bar, separate axle shafts from transaxle. Install 2 Transaxle Plugs (T88C-7025-AH) into differential side gears.
- Remove speedometer cable and disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness connector at sensor. Remove inspection cover at transaxle-to-engine spacer plate. Remove torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Lower vehicle and remove front upper engine mount bracket nuts.
- Lower engine and transaxle assembly until transaxle is even with left side of frame. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, lower engine until A/C compressor is below right side of frame. Raise vehicle.
- Support transaxle with hydraulic jack. Remove starter and remaining transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Separate engine from transaxle. Lower transaxle and remove from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque converter is fully seated before proceeding. Torque converter must be .390" (10 mm) below surface of bellhousing.
- Always replace circlip on CV joint stub shaft. Carefully align splines on axle shafts with differential splines. Push in on CV joint until circlip seats in groove in side gear.
- Prior to subframe installation, install Subframe Alignment Pin Set (T94P-2100-AH). Tighten subframe-to-body bolts to specification and remove alignment pin set. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61314-S18019963632001100200000) . Install Powertrain Alignment Gauge (T94P-6000-AH) to left front engine mount bracket. Ensure alignment is correct as engine and transaxle-to-subframe mounts are installed. Remove powertrain alignment gauge.
- Install NEW pinch bolts and nuts for lower ball joints. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid. See the TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article. Check and adjust axle shaft positioning. See the AXLE SHAFT article in DRIVE AXLES section.
