TROUBLE SHOOTING
Verify customer concern by operating windows to duplicate condition. Visually inspect components. If inspection reveals an obvious concern which can be easily serviced, correct malfunction before continuing inspection and verification.
Mechanical
- Window alignment.
- Window mounting (regulator and bracket).
- Window frame interference.
Electrical
- Blown fuse(s).
- Damaged wiring harness.
- Loose or corroded connections.
- Damaged switches.
- Damaged window motor.
If problem is not found, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
Note. For further information of self-diagnostic system, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article.
- For preliminary testing, see «TROUBLE SHOOTING»(ref-2724-S01743938402000041200000) . If problem is not found, check Generic Electronic Module (GEM) for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Connect New Generation STAR (NGS) tester, or equivalent scan tool, to Data Link Connector (DLC) located below center of instrument panel. Using NGS tester, perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If NGS tester displays CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article to diagnosis network concern. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for GEM, perform «TEST J: NO SCAN TOOL COMMUNICATION WITH GEM»(ref-2724-S11132496872000041200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If NGS tester displays SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform GEM self-test. If GEM DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, see «GEM DTC TEST INDEX»(ref-2724-S09216208382000041200000) table to continue diagnosis. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, perform appropriate test based on symptom. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-2724-S19703581842000041200000) table under SYSTEM TESTS. GEM DTC TEST INDEX
TEST A: ALL POWER WINDOWS INOPERATIVE (2-DOOR & 4-DOOR)
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID IGN_GEM while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID IGN_GEM values agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PID IGN_GEM values do not agree with ignition switch positions, check battery saver and accessory delay relays. See «ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY»(ref-2724-S38092810422000041200000) and «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. Check ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Check ignition circuits. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform GEM self-test. If no DTCs, or DTCs B1313 or B1315, are retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1302 or B1304 is retrieved, go to step 4. If DTC B1342 is retrieved, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID BATSAV while triggering GEM active command BATT SAVR on and off. If GEM PID BATSAV value agrees with command mode, go to next step. If GEM PID BATSAV value does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G or ON-B-, check battery saver relay and circuits. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID ACCDLY while triggering GEM active command ACCY RLY on and off. If PID ACCDLY value agrees with command mode and vehicle is a 2-door, go to step 11. If PID ACCDLY value agrees with command mode and vehicle is a 4-door, go to step 10. If PID ACCDLY value does not agree with command mode and displays ON-B-, go to step 8. If PID ACCDLY value does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove accessory delay relay. Measure voltage between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 86 and ground. (Scheme 1) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Light Green/Orange wire.
- Test accessory delay relay. See «ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY»(ref-2724-S38092810422000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If accessory delay relay is defective, replace relay. If accessory delay relay is okay, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 85 and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 17. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Red wire.
- Test accessory delay relay. See «ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY»(ref-2724-S38092810422000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If accessory delay relay is defective, replace relay. If accessory delay relay is okay, go to next step.
- Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 85 and ground. (Scheme 1) If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Light Blue/Red wire. If there is no voltage, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, trigger ACCY RLY on. Measure voltage between master window/door lock switch connector Light Blue/Black wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 14. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove maxi-fuse No. 4 (30-amp) from battery junction box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and retest system operation. If fuse fails again, repair short to ground in Red/Light Blue wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Remove accessory delay relay. Measure voltage between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 87 and ground. (Scheme 1) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Red/Light Blue wire.
- Test accessory delay relay. See «ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY»(ref-2724-S38092810422000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If accessory delay relay is defective, replace relay. If accessory delay relay is okay, repair Light Blue/Black wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Turn ignition off. On 4-door models, measure resistance between master window/door lock switch connector terminal No. 13 (Black wire) and ground. (Scheme 3) On 2-door models, measure resistance between driver's window switch connector terminals No. 2, 4, 9 and 11 (Black wires) and ground. (Scheme 4) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between master window/door lock switch connector and ground. Ground point is behind driver's kick panel. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.

TEST B: DRIVER'S DOOR POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE (4-DOOR)
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID IGN_GEM while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID IGN_GEM values agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PID IGN_GEM values do not agree with ignition switch positions, check battery saver and accessory delay relays. - Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform GEM self-test. If no DTCs are present, go to step 13. If DTC B1398 or B1400 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1404 or B1410 is retrieved, go to step 9. If DTC B1405 is retrieved, go to step 12. If DTC B1342 is retrieved, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, trigger GEM active command ACCY RLY on. Observe GEM PID D_PWRLY while triggering active command ONE TOUCH on and off. If PID D_PWRLY value agrees with command mode, go to step 9. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G, go to next step. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays ON-B-, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If one-touch down relay is okay, go to next step.
- Remove accessory delay relay. Measure resistance between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 30 and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate Light Blue/Black wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 7. (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If one-touch down relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 5) If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Yellow/Red wire. If there is no voltage, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a jumper wire between master window/door lock switch connector Red/Yellow wire terminal and ground. Connect second jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire terminal and battery positive terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If driver's door window does not go down, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If driver's door window goes down, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance of Tan/Light Blue wire between master window/door lock switch connector and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- Measure resistance between GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3 and ground. (Scheme 2) If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3 and ground. (Scheme 2) If voltage exists, repair short to power in Tan/Light Blue wire. If voltage is not present, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver's door window motor connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. While holding master window/door lock switch driver's door window in DOWN position, measure voltage between window motor connector Red wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 16. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove one-touch down relay. Measure resistance between driver's door window motor connector Red wire terminal and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 3. (Scheme 5) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire.
- Remove one-touch down relay. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between master window/door lock switch Tan/Light Blue wire terminal and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 4. (Scheme 5) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace one-touch down relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- While holding master window/door lock switch driver's door window in UP position, measure voltage between driver's door window motor connector White/Black wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace driver's door window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(ref-2724-S14015472962000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair White/Black wire. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.

TEST C: DRIVER'S DOOR POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE (2-DOOR)
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID IGN_GEM while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID IGN_GEM values agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PID IGN_GEM values do not agree with ignition switch positions, check battery saver and accessory delay relays. - Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform GEM self-test. If no DTCs are present, go to step 13. If DTC B1398 or B1400 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1404 or B1410 is retrieved, go to step 9. If DTC B1405 is retrieved, go to step 12. If DTC B1342 is retrieved, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, trigger GEM active command ACCY RLY on. Observe GEM PID D_PWRLY while triggering active command ONE TOUCH on and off. If PID D_PWRLY value agrees with command mode, go to step 9. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G, go to next step. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays ON-B-, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay as necessary. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Remove accessory delay relay. Measure resistance between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 30 and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). Measure resistance between accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 30 and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 5. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate Light Blue/Black wire(s).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 7. (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to RUN position. Measure voltage between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 5) If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Yellow/Red wire. If there is no voltage, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 14-pin connector. Connect jumper wire between master window/door lock switch connector Tan/Light Blue wire terminal and battery positive terminal. Connect second jumper wire between master window/door lock switch connector White/Black wire terminal and ground. If window goes down, replace master window/door lock switch. Clear DTCs and retest system. If window does not go down, remove jumper wires and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance of Tan/Light Blue wire between driver's window switch connector and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- Measure resistance between GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3 and ground. (Scheme 2) If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect driver's window switch 14-pin connector. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between GEM connector C283 terminal No. 3 and ground. (Scheme 2) If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Tan/Light Blue wire. If there is no voltage, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver's window motor connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. While holding driver's window switch in DOWN position, measure voltage between driver's window motor connector Red wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 16. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove one-touch down relay. Measure resistance between driver's window motor connector Red wire terminal and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 3. (Scheme 5) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire.
- Disconnect driver's window switch 14-pin connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Light Blue wire between driver's window switch connector and one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 4. (Scheme 5) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace one-touch down relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- While holding driver's window switch in UP position, measure voltage between driver's window motor connector White/Black wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace driver's window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(ref-2724-S14015472962000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair White/Black wire.
TEST D: RIGHT FRONT POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE (4-DOOR)
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect right front window switch 7-pin connector. Ensure window lock-out switch on master window/door lock switch is in UNLOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between right front window switch connector Red/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between right front window switch connector White/Yellow wire terminal and ground. Measure resistance between Tan/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If each resistance is less than 14 ohms, go to step 5. If either resistance is 14 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition off. Remove master window/door lock switch. Ensure window lock-out switch is in UNLOCK position. Measure resistance between master window/door lock switch terminals No. 19 and 20 (component side). (Scheme 3) If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair appropriate Red/Light Blue wire(s). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Turn ignition off. Remove master window/door lock switch. Measure resistance of White/Yellow wire between master window/door lock switch connector and right front window switch connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Light Blue wire between master window/door lock switch connector and right front window switch connector. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace master window/door lock switch. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair appropriate wire(s).
- Connect jumper wire between right front window switch connector White/Yellow wire and Yellow/Red wire terminals. Connect second jumper between right front window switch connector Red/Light Blue wire and Red/Yellow wire terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If right front window does not operate in downward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If right front window operates in downward direction, but does not operate with right front window switch, replace right front window switch. If right front window operates in downward direction and operates with right front window switch, but not with master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Connect jumper wire between right front window switch connector Red/Yellow wire and Tan/Light Blue wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between right front window switch connector Yellow/Red wire and Red/Light Blue wire terminals. If right front window does not operate in upward direction, disconnect jumper wires and go to next step. If right front window operates in upward direction, but does not operate with right front window switch, replace right front window switch. If right front window operates in upward direction and operates with right front window switch, but not with master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect window motor connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between right front window switch connector and window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Measure resistance of Red/Yellow wire between right front window switch connector and right front window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace right front window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(ref-2724-S14015472962000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
TEST E: RIGHT FRONT POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE (2-DOOR)
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect right front window switch 7-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between right front window switch connector Light Blue/Black wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Light Blue/Black wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000) .
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between right front window switch connector White/Yellow wire terminal and ground. Measure resistance between Tan/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If each resistance is less than 14 ohms, go to step 4 . If either resistance is 14 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect driver's window switch 14-pin connector. Measure resistance of White/Yellow wire between driver's window switch connector and right front window switch connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Light Blue wire between driver's window switch connector and right front window switch connector. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace right front window switch. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire(s).
- Connect jumper wire between right front window switch connector White/Yellow wire and Yellow/Red wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between right front window switch connector Light Blue/Black wire and Red/Yellow wire terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If right front window does not operate in downward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If right front window operates in downward direction and does not operate with right front window switch, replace right front window switch. If right front window operates in downward direction and operates with right front window switch, but not with driver's window switch, replace driver's window switch.
- Turn ignition off. Connect jumper wire between right front window switch connector Red/Yellow wire and Tan/Light Blue wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between right front window switch connector Yellow/Red wire and Light Blue/Black wire terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If right front window does not operate in upward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If right front window operates in upward direction, but does not operate from right front window switch, replace right front window switch. If right front window operates in upward direction and operates from right front window switch, but not driver's window switch, replace driver's window switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect right front window motor connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between right front window motor connector and right front window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
- Measure resistance of Red/Yellow wire between right front window motor connector and right front window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace right front window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(ref-2724-S14015472962000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
TEST F: LEFT REAR POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect left rear window switch 7-pin connector. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(ref-2724-S34617347072000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure window lock-out switch on master window/door lock switch is in UNLOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between left rear window switch connector Red/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between left rear window switch connector Gray/Orange wire terminal and ground. Measure resistance between Yellow/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. Measure resistance between master window/door lock switch terminals No. 19 and 20 (component side). (Scheme 3) If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Red/Light Blue wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Light Blue wire between master window/door lock switch connector and left rear window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Light Blue wire.
- Measure resistance of Gray/Orange wire between master window/door lock switch connector and left rear window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/Orange wire.
- Connect jumper wire between left rear window switch connector Gray/Orange wire and Yellow/Black wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between left rear window switch connector Yellow/Light Blue wire and Red/Light Blue wire terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If left rear window does not operate in downward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If left rear window operates in downward direction, but does not operate with left rear window switch, replace left rear window switch. If left rear window operates in downward direction and operates with left rear window switch, but does not operate with master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Connect jumper wire between left rear window switch connector Yellow/Light Blue wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between left rear window switch connector Red/Light blue wire and Yellow/Black wire terminals. If window does not operate in upward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If window operates in upward direction, but does not operate from left rear window switch, replace left rear window switch. If window operates in upward direction and operates from left rear window switch, but does not operate from master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect left rear window motor connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between left rear switch connector and window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Black wire.
- Measure resistance of Yellow/Light Blue wire between left rear window switch connector and window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR»(ref-2724-S14015472962000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Light Blue wire.
TEST G: RIGHT REAR POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect right rear window switch 7-pin connector. Ensure window lock-out switch on master window/door lock switch is in UNLOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between right rear window switch connector Red/Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between right rear window switch connector Red/Black wire terminal and ground. Measure resistance between Yellow/Black wire terminal and ground. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. Measure resistance between master window/door lock switch terminals No. 19 and 20 (component side). (Scheme 3) If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Red/Light Blue wire(s). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect master window/door lock switch 20-pin connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between master window/door lock switch connector and right rear window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Black wire.
- Measure resistance of Red/Black wire between master window/door lock switch connector and right rear window switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace master window/door lock switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Black wire.
- Connect jumper wire between right rear window switch connector Yellow/Black wire and Brown wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between right rear window switch connector Red/Light Blue wire and Brown/Yellow wire terminals. If window does not operate in downward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If window operates in downward direction, but does not operate from right rear window switch, replace right rear window switch. If window operates in downward direction and operates from right rear window switch, but does not operate from master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Connect jumper wire between right rear window switch connector Brown/Yellow wire and Red/Black wire terminals. Connect second jumper wire between right rear window switch connector Brown wire and Red/Light Blue wire terminals. If window does not operate in upward direction, remove jumper wires and go to next step. If window operates in upward direction, but does not operate with right rear window switch, replace right rear window switch. If window operates in upward direction and operates with right rear window switch, but not with master window/door lock switch, replace master window/door lock switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect right rear window motor connector. Measure resistance of Brown wire between right rear window switch connector and right rear window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire.
- Measure resistance of Brown/Yellow wire between right rear window switch connector and right rear window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace right rear window motor. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/Yellow wire.
TEST H: ONE-TOUCH DOWN FEATURE INOPERATIVE
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID IGN_GEM while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID IGN_GEM values agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PID IGN_GEM values do not agree with ignition switch positions, check battery saver and accessory delay relays. See «ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY»(ref-2724-S38092810422000041200000) and «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. Check ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Check ignition circuits. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform GEM self-test. If no DTCs, or DTCs B1398 or B1400, are retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1342 is retrieved, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, trigger GEM active command ACCY RLY on. Observe GEM PID D_PWRLY while triggering active command ONE TOUCH on and off. If PID D_PWRLY value agrees with command mode, go to step 9. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G, go to next step. If PID D_PWRLY value does not agree with command mode and displays ON-B-, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Remove accessory delay relay. Measure resistance between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 2 and accessory delay relay socket terminal No. 30. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Black wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Measure resistance between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 7. (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 5) If there is any voltage, repair short to power in Yellow/Red wire. If there is no voltage, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Test one-touch down relay. See «BATTERY SAVER & ONE-TOUCH DOWN RELAYS»(ref-2724-S20038334762000041200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If one-touch down relay is defective, replace relay. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 5 and ground. Measure voltage between one-touch down relay socket terminal No. 2 and ground. (Scheme 5) If each voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If either voltage is 10 volts or less, repair appropriate Light Blue/Black wire(s). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-2724-S42299985702000041200000).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Disconnect left front window motor. Measure resistance between left front window motor connector Red wire terminal and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 10 (Gray wire). (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire or Gray wire.
- Measure resistance between left front window motor connector Red wire terminal and GEM connector C283 terminal No. 2 (Orange/White wire). (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(ref-2724-S18821655822000041200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/White wire or Red wire.
TEST J: NO SCAN TOOL COMMUNICATION WITH GEM
Note. After all repairs, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Check battery junction box maxi-fuse No. 1 (50-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. Clear DTCs and retest system. If fuse fails again, check for short to power in Tan/Black wire between battery junction box and fuse junction panel. Repair circuit as necessary.
- Check fuse junction panel fuse No. 25 (7.5-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If fuse fails again, check for short to ground White/Yellow wire between fuse junction panel and GEM. Repair circuit as necessary.
- Measure voltage between fuse junction panel fuse No. 25 (7.5-amp) fuse holder (input side) and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Tan/Black wire. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 18-pin connector C283. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between GEM connector C283 terminal No. 11 (White/Yellow wire) and ground. (Scheme 2) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair White/Yellow wire between fuse junction panel and GEM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect GEM 26-pin connector C280. Connect negative battery cable. Measure resistance between GEM connector C280 terminal No. 14 (Black/White wire) and ground. (Scheme 6) Measure resistance between terminal No. 26 (Black/White wire) and ground. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate Black/White wire(s) between GEM connector C280 and ground. Ground point is located left front engine compartment near radiator.
- Measure resistance between GEM 18-pin connector C283 (Black wire) terminal No. 18 and ground. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, problem is in module communications network. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
