PARKING AID MODULE (PAM)
Note. Liftgate must be closed for proper operation of parking aid system.
Parking Aid Module (PAM) system consists of 4 sensors located in rear bumper, an audible tone sounder, PAM, PAM disable switch and reverse gear select input to PAM. Parking aid system detects objects behind vehicle when vehicle gear selector is placed in reverse and ignition switch is in RUN position. PAM calculates distance to an object by using 4 ultrasonic sensors mounted in rear bumper. Sensors can detect objects in a semicircular area around vehicle, approximately 5.9 ft. (1.80 m) to rear of vehicle 18" (50.0 cm) to rear side of vehicle and 6" (16.0 cm) above ground. A variable tone is generated from a sounder located inside right rear quarter trim panel. Warning tone rate increases as vehicle gets closer to obstacle and becomes continuous when vehicle is within 10" (25.0 cm) of object.
INITIAL CHECKS
Visually inspect following items for electrical damage: Fuse Junction Box (FJB) fuse No. 27 (15-amp), wiring harnesses, electrical connectors for looseness or corrosion, PAM, FJB, relays, parking aid sensors, parking aid disable switch, LED, parking aid sounder and reversing lamps.
SYSTEM TESTS
Note. For module, switch or sensor replacement procedure, see REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For help with wiring diagnosis or repairs, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . | CAUTION | Be careful when probing Fuse Junction Box (FJB), power distribution box or any connectors. Damage will result to connector receptacle if probe or terminal being used is too large. Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. |
AZIMUTH SYSTEM CHECK
Note. Object used in this system check can be fabricated from 3" diameter pipe 39" (99.1 cm) in length. Azimuth system check should be performed with vehicle on a level surface. Parking Aid Module (PAM) will default to ON when ignition key is turned from OFF to RUN position.
Turn ignition switch to RUN position with engine off. Set parking brake and place shift lever in Reverse. Ensure PAM detects objects within appropriate distances. See MINIMUM DETECTABLE OBJECT DISTANCES table. For 5 specified object locations (Scheme 4)

ELEVATION SYSTEM CHECK
- Parking aid system must be inspected to ensure system does not receive signals from ground reflections. Perform system check with vehicle on 10 x 15 foot smooth concrete surface. Area should be free of obstacles and noise from fans and pneumatic equipment.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Set parking brake and place shift lever in Reverse. No audible alerts should be heard. If audible alerts are heard, ensure bumper is properly installed and is not tilting downward so sensors are pointing at ground. If no audible alerts are heard, system is operating correctly.
