SELF-DIAGNOSTICS

Note. All diagnostic tests are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester. Most generic scan tools should be able to perform all test procedures.

Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located beneath instrument panel. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. If NGS tester responds with CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Parking Aid Module (PAM) , perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH PARKING AID MODULE (PAM) under SYSTEM TESTS.

If NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform PAM self-test. Perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. Go to PARKING AID MODULE DTC INDEX table. Codes listed in these tables are only for testing covered in this article. If no DTCs are retrieved though PAM self-diagnostics, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION table.

SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION

TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH PARKING AID MODULE (PAM)

  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Parking Aid Module (PAM) self-test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1299 is retrieved, go to step 4 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 1 (Violet/Orange wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Violet/Orange wire between PAM and Fuse Junction Box (FJB).
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between PAM and ground.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 1 (Violet/Orange wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 2 . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Violet/Orange wire.

TEST B: PARKING AID INOPERATIVE

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Parking Aid Module (PAM) self-test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to step 24.   2. Disconnect appropriate parking aid sensor and PAM 26-pin connector C440. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Yellow wire.
  3. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 15 (Brown/Pink wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Brown/Pink wire.
  4. Using «PAM TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(ref-1930-S13098361182000031500000) table to measure resistances between PAM harness connector C440 and ground. If resistances are more than 10 k/ohms on all circuits, go to next step. If resistance on any circuit is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in affected circuit.   5. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and appropriate parking aid sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Green/Yellow wire). (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/Yellow wire.
  6. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 15 (Brown/Pink wire) and appropriate parking aid sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Brown/Pink wire). (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/Pink wire.
  7. Using «PAM TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(ref-1930-S13098361182000031500000) table to measure resistances between appropriate PAM harness connector C440 terminal and appropriate parking aid sensor harness connector terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1) If resistances are less than 5 ohms on all circuits and all 4 sensors set DTCs, replace PAM. If resistances are less than 5 ohms on all circuits and all 4 sensors did not set DTCs, replace appropriate sensor. If resistance on any circuit is 5 ohms or more, repair open in affected circuit.
  8. Disconnect appropriate parking aid sensor 3-pin connector and PAM 26-pin connector C440. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Dark Green/Yellow wire.
  9. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 15 (Brown/Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Brown/Pink wire.
  10. Using «PAM TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(ref-1930-S13098361182000031500000) table to measure voltages between appropriate PAM harness connector C440 terminals and ground. If voltage is present on any circuits, repair short to voltage in affected circuit. If voltage is not present on any circuit and all 4 parking aid sensors set DTCs, replace PAM. If voltage is not present on any circuit and less than 4 parking aid sensor DTCs are retrieved, replace appropriate parking aid sensor(s).
  11. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminals No. 14 (Black/Pink wire) and No. 17 (Dark Green wire). If resistance is more than 60 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 60 ohms or less, go to step 14.
  12. Disconnect parking aid sounder 2-pin connector C441. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 14 (Black/Pink wire) and parking aid sounder harness connector C441 terminal No. 1 (Black/Pink wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Pink wire.
  13. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 17 (Dark Green wire) and parking aid sounder harness connector C441 terminal No. 2 (Dark Green wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace parking aid sounder. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green wire.
  14. Disconnect parking aid sounder 2-pin connector C441. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 14 (Black/Pink wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Pink wire.
  15. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 17 (Dark Green wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire.
  16. Measure resistance between parking aid sounder component connector C441 terminal No. 1 and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace PAM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace parking aid sounder.
  17. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 14 (Black/Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace PAM.
  18. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect parking aid sounder. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 14 (Black/Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage in Black/Pink wire. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire.
  19. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 19 (Violet/Orange wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Violet/Orange wire.
  20. Disconnect parking aid disable switch 6-pin connector C2015. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 19 (Violet/Orange wire) and parking aid disable switch harness connector C2015 terminal No. 2 (Violet/Orange wire). (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/Orange wire.
  21. Measure resistance between parking aid disable switch harness connector C2015 terminal No. 5 (Black wire) and ground. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
  22. Check parking aid disabled indicator diode. If parking aid disabled indicator is okay, replace PAM. If parking aid disabled indicator is not okay, replace parking aid disable switch.
  23. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If parking aid disabled indicator illuminates, repair short to voltage in Violet/Orange wire between PAM and parking aid disable switch. If parking aid disabled indicator does not illuminate, replace PAM.
  24. Inspect bumper for proper alignment. Also, inspect parking aid sensors and holders for proper alignment. See «AZIMUTH SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-1930-S41059815922000031500000) or «ELEVATION SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-1930-S14750044652000031500000) under VERIFICATION TESTS. If bumper and parking aid sensors are properly aligned, go to next step. If bumper or parking aid sensors are not properly aligned, realign sensors or replace bumper. If vehicle has been in an accident, further body work may be necessary to bring parking aid sensors into correct alignment.
  25. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set parking brake, and place transmission shift lever in Reverse. If right hand reversing lamp illuminates, go to next step. If right hand reversing lamp does not illuminate, see AUTOLAMPS SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article for testing procedures.
  26. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PAM 26-pin connector C440. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 9 (Black/Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Black/Pink wire.
  27. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 7 (Dark Green/Violet wire) and ground. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 29.
  28. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect parking aid disable switch 6-pin connector C2015. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 7 (Dark Green/Violet wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace parking aid disable switch. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Violet wire.
  29. While depressing parking aid disable switch, measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 7 (Dark Green/Violet wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PAM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  30. Disconnect parking aid disable switch 6-pin connector C2015. Measure resistance between PAM harness connector C440 terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
  31. Using «PARKING AID DISABLE SWITCH RESISTANCE»(ref-1930-S39473811932000031500000) table, measure resistance between parking aid disable switch component terminals No. 4 and No. 6. (Scheme 2) If resistance readings are not correct for switch position, replace parking aid disable switch. If resistance readings are correct for switch position, replace PAM. PARKING AID DISABLE SWITCH RESISTANCE Between Terminals No. Reading With Switch Pressed Reading With Switch Released 4 & 6 Less Than 35 Ohms More Than 10 K/Ohms
