Engine Ignition System: Removal & Installation Mercury Monterey VIII

Removal and Installation

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-234519) .
  2. Remove the wiper motor and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-234530) .
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  4. Disconnect the 6 spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
  5. Remove the 3 bolts and the ignition coil. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-234483) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-234519) .
  3. Remove the windshield wiper motor and wiper pivot arm. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-234530) .
  4. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
  5. Detach the spark plug wire retainers.
  6. Using the special tool, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug using a twisting motion.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-234483) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-234519) .
  3. With a twisting motion, use the special tool to pull the 6 spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  4. Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs.
  5. Remove the 6 spark plugs.

Scheme 2: Installation
  1. Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
  2. Install the 6 spark plugs. Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
  3. Apply dielectric grease to the inside of the spark plug wire boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
  4. Connect the 6 spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-234519) .
