Fuel System 1 illustration ~241 words

Fuel Charging and Controls

The fuel charging and controls system consists of the

  1. throttle body.
  2. fuel injector.
  3. fuel charging wiring.
  4. fuel injection supply manifold.
  5. fuel pressure and temperature sensor.
  6. fuel pump relay.
  7. fuel pump driver module.

The fuel charging and controls system is

  1. a sequential multiport fuel injection (SFI) system.
  2. pulse-width modulated.
  3. mass air flow controlled.

The fuel injection supply manifold

  1. delivers fuel to the individual fuel injectors.
  2. receives fuel from the fuel supply line.

The throttle body

  1. controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
  2. connects the accelerator cable and, if equipped, speed control actuator cable to the throttle plate.
  3. is not adjustable.
  4. cannot be cleaned.

The fuel injectors

  1. are electrically operated by the powertrain control module (PCM).
  2. have an internal solenoid which opens a needle valve to inject fuel into the lower intake manifold.
  3. atomize the fuel as the fuel is delivered.
  4. are deposit-resistant.

The fuel pressure and temperature sensor

  1. measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel in the fuel supply manifold and sends these signals to the PCM.
  2. uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

The fuel pump driver module

  1. receives signals from the PCM.
  2. duty cycles the fuel pump.

The fuel pump relay engages the fuel pump when energized by the powertrain control module through the fuel pump driver module.
