Inspection and Verification

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Mechanical Electrical Compass module Front display interface module (FDIM) Smart junction box (SJB) fuses: 14 (10A) 31 (10A) (early build) 41 (15A) (late build) Wiring, terminals or connectors
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-292179) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-292179) article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-292179) article. If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the FDIM and the instrument cluster (IC).
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC Charts. For all other DTCs, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-292180) article.
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to «Symptom Chart»(ref-292255-S39858931822008073100000) .

Pinpoint Test A: The Compass Is Inoperative

Refer to appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Audio System for schematic and connector information.

CAUTIONUse the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

Note. Always set the zone and calibrate the compass before replacing an inaccurate compass.

  1. A1 CHECK THE COMPASS DISPLAY Key in ON position. Check the compass display. Does the compass display illuminate? YES : If the vehicle is equipped with an external compass module (early build), go to A3 . If the vehicle is equipped with an internal compass module (late build), go to A9 . If the compass display turns on, but it does not display all directions, or indicates CAL, go to «Pinpoint Test b»(ref-292255-S40322917982008073100000) . NO : Go to A2 .
  2. A2 CHECK THE VEHICLE CONFIGURATION Verify the vehicle is equipped with the compass feature. Is the vehicle equipped with the compass feature? YES : REFER to «INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS»(ref-292253) article to diagnose the FDIM display. NO : RETURN the vehicle to the customer and ADVISE them the vehicle is not equipped with a compass display feature.
  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP31 (BU/OG) FOR VOLTAGE (EARLY BUILD) Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Compass Module C909 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the compass module C909-3, circuit CBP31 (BU/OG), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to A4 . NO : VERIFY the SJB fuse 31 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK CIRCUIT GD182 (BK/GY) FOR AN OPEN (EARLY BUILD) Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between the compass module C909-4, circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A5 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. A5 CHECK THE DTCs (EARLY BUILD) Connect: Compass Module C909 Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Key in OFF position. Key in ON position. Wait 10 seconds. Retrieve the DTCs from the FDIM. Is DTC U0155 present? YES : REFER to «INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS»(ref-292253) article. NO : Go to A6 .
  6. A6 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC31 (YE/GN) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND (EARLY BUILD) Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Compass Module C909 Disconnect: IC C220 Measure the resistance between the compass module C909-1, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side and the IC C220-16, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side; and between the compass module C909-1, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the compass module and the IC, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the compass module and ground? YES : Go to A7 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. A7 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC30 (BU/GY) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND (EARLY BUILD) Measure the resistance between the compass module C909-2, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and the IC C220-17, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side; and between the compass module C909-2, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the compass module and the IC, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the compass module and ground? YES : Go to A8 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. A8 CHECK FOR DTC U2013 (EARLY BUILD) Key in OFF position. Connect: IC C220 Connect: Compass Module C909 Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Key in OFF position. Key in ON position. Wait 10 seconds. Retrieve the IC DTCs. Is DTC U2013 present? YES : INSTALL a new compass module. REFER to Interior Rear View Mirror in «REAR VIEW MIRRORS»(ref-292167) article. ADJUST the zone setting. REFER to «Compass Zone Adjustment»(ref-292255-S28847125862008073100000) . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to «Compass Calibration»(ref-292255-S38234410752008073100000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to A15 .
  9. A9 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP41 (BU) FOR VOLTAGE (LATE BUILD) Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Interior Rear View Mirror C9012 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the interior rear view mirror C9012-1, circuit CBP41 (BU), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to A10 . NO : VERIFY the SJB fuse 41 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. A10 CHECK CIRCUIT GD182 (BK/GY) FOR AN OPEN (LATE BUILD) Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between the interior rear view mirror C9012-3, circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A11 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. A11 CHECK THE DTCs (LATE BUILD) Connect: Interior Rear View Mirror C9012 Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Key in OFF position. Key in ON position. Wait 10 seconds. Retrieve the DTCs from the FDIM. Is DTC U0155 present? YES : REFER to «INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS»(ref-292253) article. NO : Go to A12 .
  12. A12 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC31 (YE/GN) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND (LATE BUILD) Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Interior Rear View Mirror C9012 Disconnect: IC C220 Measure the resistance between the interior rear view mirror C9012-6, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side and the IC C220-16, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side; and between the interior rear view mirror C9012-6, circuit VMC31 (YE/GN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the interior rear view mirror and the IC, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the interior rear view mirror and ground? YES : Go to A13 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. A13 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC30 (BU/GY) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND (LATE BUILD) Measure the resistance between the interior rear view mirror C9012-7, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and the IC C220-17, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side; and between the interior rear view mirror C9012-7, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the interior rear view mirror and the IC, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the interior rear view mirror and ground? YES : Go to A14 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  14. A14 CHECK FOR DTC U2013 (LATE BUILD) Key in OFF position. Connect: IC C220 Connect: Interior Rear View Mirror C9012 Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Key in OFF position. Key in ON position. Wait 10 seconds. Retrieve the IC DTCs. Is DTC U2013 present? YES : INSTALL a new interior rear view mirror. REFER to «REAR VIEW MIRRORS»(ref-292167) article. ADJUST the zone setting. REFER to «Compass Zone Adjustment»(ref-292255-S28847125862008073100000) . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to «Compass Calibration»(ref-292255-S38234410752008073100000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to A15 .
  15. A15 CHECK FOR CORRECT IC OPERATION NOTE: When a new IC is installed, the PATS keys must be programmed into the new IC. NOTE: When a new IC is installed, the parameters must be reset in the IC and the PCM. Disconnect the IC connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the IC connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new IC. REFER to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC), MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES»(ref-292190) article. RESET the parameters in both the IC and the PCM. REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - HYBRID»(ref-292187) article. PROGRAM the PATS keys into the new IC. REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)»(ref-292186) article or «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - HYBRID»(ref-292187) article. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B: THE COMPASS IS INACCURATE

CAUTIONUse the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

Note. Always set the zone and calibrate the compass before replacing an inaccurate compass.

Note. After installing a new compass module, always set the zone and calibrate the compass.

  1. B1 DEMAGNETIZE THE VEHICLE Demagnetize the vehicle. Refer to «Vehicle Demagnetizing»(ref-292255-S06182741042008073100000) . Does the compass operate correctly? YES : The compass is OK. The concern may have been caused by an incorrect zone setting, a magnetized vehicle, or the compass was out of calibration. NO : Go to B2 .
  2. B2 CHECK THE COMPASS ACCURACY Position the vehicle and observe the compass display as follows: Direction Compass Display North N Northeast NE East E Southeast SE South S Southwest SW West W Northwest NW Does the compass display as indicated? YES : The compass is OK. The concern may have been caused by an incorrect zone setting, a magnetized vehicle, or the compass was out of calibration. NO : INSTALL a new compass module. REFER to Interior Rear View Mirror in «REAR VIEW MIRRORS»(ref-292167) article. SET the zone. REFER to «Compass Zone Adjustment»(ref-292255-S28847125862008073100000) . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to «Compass Calibration»(ref-292255-S38234410752008073100000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
