INSPECTION & VERIFICATION
- Verify customer's original problem by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check related fuses for system in question.
- Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage. The DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, right of steering column. If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are damaged, repair as necessary and proceed to next step.
- If problem is still present after performing inspection, connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. If NGS tester does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check NGS tester cable connections and ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. If NGS tester still does not communicate with vehicle, perform «TEST G: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER»(ref-8433-S41223864662000082800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8433-S34006372922000082800000) .
DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST
Note. Circuit No. 70 is the White wire (White/Blue wire if equipped with ABS) connected to terminal No. 7 on DLC. This is the ISO 9141 circuit. Circuit No. 914 is the Gray wire (Gray/Violet wire if equipped with traction control) connected to terminal No. 2 on DLC. This is the SCP (+) circuit. Circuit No. 915 is the Blue wire (Blue/White wire if equipped with traction control) connected to terminal No. 10 on DLC. This is the SCP (-) circuit.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), if not already connected. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Rotate dial on NGS tester to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK and press trigger. A test will be performed on bus (circuits No. 914 and 915) network and ISO 9141 network (circuit No. 70).
- If NGS tester displays CKT 914 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 915 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED, module communications network is okay. If NGS tester displays CKT 70 = SYSTEM PASSED, ISO 9141 communication link is operating properly. Repair communication concern by symptom. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-8433-S04919857162000082800000) table under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If NGS tester does not display CKT 914 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED, CKT 915 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 70 = SYSTEM PASSED, perform the following as applicable: If no response from NGS tester, perform «TEST G: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER»(ref-8433-S41223864662000082800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays CKT 70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform «TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ISO 9141 NETWORK»(ref-8433-S31880390692000082800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays CKT 914 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform «TEST A: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER»(ref-8433-S17767541172000082800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays CKT 915 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform «TEST A: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER»(ref-8433-S17767541172000082800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If one of the modules responds NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED, repair communication concern by symptom. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-8433-S04919857162000082800000) table under SYSTEM TESTS.
RETRIEVING & CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Following manufacturers instructions to retrieve and clear codes for desired module. See appropriate table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) DEFINITIONS for a listing of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and appropriate test procedure.
TEST A: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running 2-3 volts may exist at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals No. 2 (Gray wire without traction control; Gray/Violet wire with traction control) and No. 10 (Blue wire without traction control; Blue/White wire with traction control). These are the Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) diagnostic communications network circuits.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect New Generation Star (NGS) Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C421. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary.
- Check resistance between PCM harness connector C421 terminal No. 16 (Gray wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2 (Gray wire without traction control; Gray/Violet wire with traction control). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Violet and/or Gray wire between DLC and PCM.
- Check resistance between PCM harness connector C421 terminal No. 15 (Blue wire) and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue wire without traction control; Blue/White wire with traction control). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, open in Blue and/or Blue/White wire.
- Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module harness connector C385 (if equipped with traction control). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray wire without traction control; Gray/Violet wire with traction control). If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray and/or Gray/Violet wire.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray wire without traction control; Gray/Violet wire with traction control). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray and/or Gray/Violet wire.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue wire without traction control; Blue/White wire with traction control). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Blue and/or Blue/White wire.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue wire without traction control; Blue/White wire with traction control). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Blue and/or Blue/White wire.
- If vehicle is equipped with traction control, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with traction control, replace PCM if PCM power and ground circuits are okay.
- Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace ABS module.
- Connect ABS module harness connector C385. Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace ABS module.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire). If voltage is 6 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 6 volts, replace ABS module.
- Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire). If voltage does not exist, replace PCM if PCM power and ground circuits are okay. If voltage exists, replace ABS module.

TEST B: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module harness connector C385. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary.
- Check resistance between ABS module harness connector C385 terminal No. 24 (White/Violet wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White/Blue wire). (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 3). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Blue and/or White/Violet wire between ABS module and DLC.
- If vehicle is equipped with traction control, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with traction control, replace ABS module if ABS module power and ground circuits are okay.
- Check resistance between ABS module harness connector C385 terminal No. 29 (Blue wire) and DLC terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Blue and/or Blue/White wire between ABS module and DLC.
- Check resistance between ABS module harness connector C385 terminal No. 30 (Gray wire) and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ABS module if ABS module power and ground circuits are okay. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray or Gray/Violet wire between ABS module and DLC.

TEST C: AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. Air bag control module may also be referred to as electronic crash sensor module.
- Using scan tool, check for response from instrument cluster. If instrument cluster result is also NO MODULES/NOT EQUIPPED, go to next step. If instrument cluster responds, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance between and male side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire and/or White/Blue wire between DLC and in-line harness connector C62. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair connector terminals and recheck system.
- Check vehicle equipment. If vehicle is equipped with anti-theft/double locking module, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with anti-theft/double locking module, go to step 6.
- Using scan tool, check for response from anti-theft/double locking module. If anti-theft/double locking module result is also NO MODULES/NOT EQUIPPED, go to next step. If anti-theft/double locking module responds, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C58, located in passenger's side kick panel. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance of White wire between female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 and female side of connector C58 terminal No. 9. (Scheme 5) If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between in-line harness connectors C62 and C58.
- Disarm air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect air bag control module harness connector C20. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance of White/Red wire between air bag control module harness connector C20 terminal No. 24 and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6. (Scheme 4)and (Scheme 6). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Red wire between in-line harness connector C62 and air bag control module. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace air bag control module if air bag control module power and ground circuits are okay.
- Disarm air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect air bag control module harness connector C20. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance of White/Red wire between air bag control module harness connector C20 terminal No. 24 and female side of in-line harness connector C58 terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Red wire between in-line harness connector C58 and air bag control module. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace air bag control module if air bag control module power and ground circuits are okay.

TEST D: HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER (HEC) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module is built into instrument cluster.
- Using scan tool, check for response from air bag module. If air bag module result is also NO MODULES/NOT EQUIPPED, go to next step. If air bag responds, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance between male side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire and/or White/Blue wire between DLC and in-line harness connector C62. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair connector terminals and recheck system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect HEC module harness connector C808a. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary.
- Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance of White/Blue wire between HEC module harness connector C808a terminal No. 9 and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6. (Scheme 4)and (Scheme 6). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster if HEC module power and ground circuits are okay. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open on White/Blue wire. Recheck system.
TEST E: ANTI-THEFT/DOUBLE LOCKING MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. Anti-theft/double locking module may also be referred to as Central Security Module (CSM).
- Using scan tool, check for response from air bag module. If air bag module result is also NO MODULES/NOT EQUIPPED, go to next step. If air bag responds, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance between male side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire and/or White/Blue wire between DLC and in-line harness connector C62.
- Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C58, located in passenger's side kick panel. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check resistance of White wire between female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 and female side of connector C58 terminal No. 9. (Scheme 5) If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair connector terminals as necessary. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between in-line harness connectors C62 and C58.
- Disconnect anti-theft/double locking module harness connector C451b, located in passenger's side kick panel. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance of White wire between anti-theft/double locking module harness connector C451b terminal No. 4 and male side of connector C58 terminal No. 9. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace anti-theft/double locking module. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between in-line harness connector and C58 and anti-theft/double locking module.
TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ISO 9141 NETWORK
Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running, 2-3 volts may exist at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). This is the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 diagnostic communications network circuit.
Note. Anti-theft/double locking module may also be referred to as Central Security Module (CSM). Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module is built into instrument cluster. Air bag control module may also be referred to as electronic crash sensor module.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester (if connected). Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair connector as necessary. Check resistance between male side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire) and DLC terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire and/or White/Blue wire between DLC and in-line harness connector C62.
- Connect in-line harness connector C62. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 12.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ABS module harness connector C385. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage on White wire (without ABS) or White/Blue wire (with ABS). If battery voltage does not exist, replace ABS module.
- If vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft/double locking module, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with an anti-theft/double locking module, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C58, located in passenger's side kick panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect air bag control module harness connector C20. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace air bag control module.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module harness connector C808a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage on ISO circuit. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If battery voltage does not exist, replace instrument cluster.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect anti-theft/double locking module harness connector C451b, located in passenger's side kick panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and male side of in-line harness connector C58 terminal No. 9 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage on White wire between in-line harness connector C58 and anti-theft/double locking module. If battery voltage does not exist, replace anti-theft/double locking module.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect air bag control module harness connector C20. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace air bag control module.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module harness connector C808a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage on ISO circuit. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If battery voltage does not exist, replace instrument cluster.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS) at DLC. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, ISO circuit is okay. Recheck system.
- Disconnect 14-pin in-line harness connector C62, located behind instrument cluster. Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White wire without ABS; White/Blue wire with ABS). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 16.
- If vehicle is equipped with ABS, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with ABS, repair White wire between DLC terminal No. 7 and anti-theft/double locking module terminal No. 4.
- Disconnect anti-lock brake module harness connector C385. Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Blue wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground on White/Blue wire. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace anti-lock brake module.
- If vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft/double locking module, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with an anti-theft/double locking module, go to step 19.
- Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C58, located in passenger's side kick panel. Check resistance between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to step 19.
- Disconnect anti-theft/double locking module harness connector C451b, located in passenger's side kick panel. Check resistance between ground and male side of in-line harness connector C58 terminal No. 9 (White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace anti-theft/double locking module. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground on White wire between anti-theft/double locking module and in-line harness connector C58. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace anti-theft/double locking module.
- Disconnect air bag control module harness connector C20. Check resistance between ground and female side of in-line harness connector C62 terminal No. 6 (White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace air bag control module. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
- Disconnect Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module harness connector C808a. Check resistance between ground and terminal female side of in-line harness connector C62 No. 6 (White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) module. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground on ISO circuit. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
TEST G: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 16 (Orange wire). (Scheme 2) If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4.
- Remove fuse No. 28 (30-amp) from central junction box, located under left side of instrument panel. Inspect fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, repair short to ground in power distribution circuit as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Disconnect central junction box harness connector C371. (Scheme 7) Check resistance of Orange wire between central junction box harness connect C371 terminal No. 3 and DLC terminal No. 16. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace central junction box. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Orange wire between central junction box and DLC.
- Check resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 5 (Black/Orange wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Orange wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, power and ground check okay. Check scan tool instructions.
