Location

The central gateway control unit is mounted onto the vehicle floor below the driver seat.

Task

The central gateway control unit has the following tasks

  1. Gateway
  2. Variant coding
  3. Data container
  4. Reverse gear signal generation

Gateway

The central gateway control unit serves as an interface between the following databus systems

  1. Diagnostic CAN
  2. Interior CAN
  3. Engine compartment CAN

Diagnostic CAN

The primary purpose of the diagnostic CAN is to allow connection of an external diagnostic unit. This is used to diagnose control units.

This is achieved via diagnosis request messages which the diagnostic unit sends to the control unit in question.

The central gateway control unit responds to these diagnosis request messages with diagnosis response messages.

Interior compartment CAN

The central gateway control unit routes the information from the control units connected to the interior CAN to the control units connected to the engine compartment CAN by placing the information on the engine compartment CAN or establishes a connection between the diagnostic CAN and interior CAN for diagnostic purposes.

Engine compartment CAN

The central gateway control unit routes the information from the control units connected to the engine compartment CAN to the control units connected to the interior CAN by placing the information on the interior CAN or establishes a connection between the diagnostic CAN and engine compartment CAN for diagnostic purposes.

The functional gateway messages are sent, irrespective of the circuit status, over the interior CAN. By contrast, the control units on the engine compartment CAN only send at circuit 15 ON. The gateway messages are therefore only transmitted on the engine compartment CAN when circuit 15 is on. Routing from the interior CAN to the diagnostic CAN is only possible with an active interior CAN

Variant coding

The central gateway control unit sends information (e.g. model series and national version) over the interior CAN, engine compartment CAN and diagnostic CAN to the corresponding control units.

Data container

The data container in the central gateway control unit is a mobile data memory.

Data specific to vehicle, test site or control unit are stored in the data container within the cycle.

These data can be used in the subsequent tests for test sequence control. The total size of the data memory is 128 bytes.

Reverse gear signal generation

The "Reverse gear engaged" signal is sent irrespective of the transmission version over the interior CAN by the central gateway control unit. The reverse gear signal is generated by evaluating the "Transmission selector lever" over the engine compartment CAN.

The central gateway control unit is located in the driver footwell, on the left, toward the front of the vehicle

Task

Three CAN buses connected via the central gateway control unit are installed in the vehicle

Gateway functions

Explanation of terms

  1. DLC (Data Link Control), length information for following data

Functional gateway

During normal vehicle operation, information present on the CAN bus and required on another bus for control unit functions, are routed by the central gateway control unit.

Diagnosis gateway

In the diagnosis mode, i.e. when an external tester is connected, the diagnosis request messages are routed to the appropriate control units by the tester. In the other direction, it is necessary for the control unit to route the diagnosis response messages to the tester.

Types of routing on function gateway

Two types of routing are differentiated

  1. Routing entire CAN message
  2. Routing individual signals (a CAN message)

Routing entire CAN message

When routing an entire CAN message, the message received on the source bus is transferred 1:1 to the destination bus. Routing therefore has the following characteristics in terms of the source and destination bus

  1. The data bytes are the same.
  2. The cycle time is the same.
  3. As a rule, the DLC is the same. However, it can be smaller in the destination message than in the source message.
  4. As a rule, the identifier is the same. However, it can be different on the source and destination bus. As a rule the identifier is not changed. However, it may be necessary to change the identifier in order to avoid overlaps on the destination bus.

If the DLS for the message on the destination bus is smaller than the DLC for the message on the source bus, the data bytes are copied 1:1 beginning with byte 1 to byte DLC on the destination bus.

All diagnosis messages have a length of eight data bytes (DLC = 8).

Routing individual signals of a CAN message

When routing individual signals in a CAN message, certain signals are extracted from the CAN message received from the source bus and transferred to the destination bus in a different CAN message.

A signal is a constituent of a CAN message and can be structured as follows

  1. Bit

Since the signals on the source and destination CAN can be contained in different messages, the cycle times with which the signals are transferred can also change.

Routing therefore has the following characteristics in terms of the source and destination bus

  1. Signals in different CAN messages
  2. Therefore different DLC and identifier
  3. Different cycle times

Type of routing (routing of complete CAN message)

The message received on the CAN bus in question (CAN B/CAN C/CAN D) is transferred directly to the CAN in question after receipt.

  1. Bit sequence
  2. Byte
  3. Byte sequence

Behavior in case of time-out for received messages

Transfer of gateway messages from CAN D to CAN B is accomplished only when a message has been received on the CAN D

If a gateway message has not been received on the CAN D, such a message is not sent to the CAN B

Influence of circuit 15

The functional gateway messages are transferred to the CAN B regardless of the circuit status. The control units on the CAN C transmit, by contrast, only when circuit 15 is "ON".

The functional gateway messages are therefore transmitted to the CAN C only when circuit 15 is "ON".

Influence on network management

Routing from CAN B to CAN D is accomplished only when CAN B is active.

Influence of global version coding

(with special equipment when communications platform is present)

On the basis of the global version coding stored in the central gateway control unit it is recognized whether the special equipment communication platform is present on the CAN D. If the communication platform is not present, no functional gateway messages are transferred to the CAN D.

Special case, reverse gear signal

The "Reverse gear" engaged signal is transferred by the central gateway control unit to the CAN B for all transmissions. The reverse gear signal is configured by evaluation of the "Selector lever position" signal by the CAN C.

If the signal coincide, the "Reverse gear" signal is set. The reverse gear signal is a special case for a functional gateway signal.

Data container

The data container in the central gateway control unit represents a mobile data memory.

Within the throughput cycle data specific for the vehicle, test location and control unit is stored in the data container.

This data can be used for test sequence control in the following tests. The total size of the data memory is 128 bytes

Location

The rain/light sensor is located on the inside of the windshield below the inside rearview mirror.

Task

To measure the light intensity and degree of wetting of the windshield.

Function principle of rain sensor

Infrared light is beamed from the infrared transmitter unit (1) and is directed to the windshield (3). The intensity of light reflected at the windshield (3) is measured by the IR-receiver unit (2).

If the windshield (3) is dry in the area of the rain/light sensor (picture A), then the light is almost completely reflected and the IR-receiver unit (2) measures a high light intensity.

If the windshield (3) is wet in the area of the rain/light sensor (picture B), then part of the light is scattered out of the glass of the windshield (3). As a result the intensity of the reflected light reduces and the IR-receiver unit (2) measures a lower light intensity.

The light intensity measured by the IR receiver (2) is a measure for the quantity of water on the windshield (3). The lower the measured light intensity the greater the amount of water on the windshield (3). As of production period 01.06.2006 the sensitivity of the sensor can be preset via the combination switch (S4) with the positions "intermittent 1" and "intermittent 2".

Function principle of light sensor

The rain/light sensor measures the light intensity falling on it from outside.

The information is transmitted via the overhead control panel control unit (N70) on the Controller Area Network-Bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B)

Function

ESP OFF switch

The ESP Off switch can be used to switch the anti-slip control of the "Electronic Stability Program" on and off. The function requirements for this switch is circuit 15 "ON". The function of the ESP systems is indicated in the instrument cluster (A1).

Left front HS [SIH] switch and right front HS [SIH] switch

The heated seats have 3 stages. One-time actuation of the SIH switch activates stage 3 of the heated seats (all 3 red LEDs light up). Further actuations switch to stage 2 (the two lower LEDs go on), to stage 1 (the lowest LED goes on), or the heated seats are switched off (no function indicator). The function requirements for this switch is circuit 15R "ON". Each press of the left front HS [SIH] switch and right front HS [SIH] switch is sent by the upper control panel control unit over the CAN-B.

Level control switch

Function requirements

  1. Term. 15 "ON"

Switch actuations enable the driver to choose between a highway level and a raised level. The vehicle is in the highway level state (no function indicator). If the vehicle is lifted to the raised level, the LED in the switch flashes on and off. When the level is reached the LED remains constantly on. The last stage selected with function indicator is active once the engine is started again.

Comfort/Sport switch (ADS)

The driver can use the Comfort/Sport switch (ADS) to program the damping stage

  1. "AUTO" Skyhook mode
  2. "SPORT" Firm damping
  3. "COMFORT" Soft damping

In the "SPORT" setting the upper LED goes on and for the "COMFORT" setting the lower LED goes on. If the vehicle is in the "AUTO" mode nothing is displayed in the Comfort/Sport switch (ADS).

Hazard warning system switch

Pressing the hazard warning system switch wakes-up the upper control panel control unit from its "Sleep mode" and the hazard warning system function is activated. The message is sent cyclically (every 100 ms) until the function is deactivated by pressing the hazard warning system switch again. The flashing function illumination of the hazard warning system switch is triggered by the CAN message of the rear SAM control unit (N10/8). There is no faster flashing of a defective indicator lamp for the hazard warning flasher system. As soon as the hazard warning flasher function is activated the switch and controls illumination for the hazard warning system switch is switched off. The function illumination of the hazard warning system is not dimmed.

The selected function is confirmed when the indicator lamps (LEDs) light up. The pulse to light up is sent by each respective control unit

Trailer recognition

The rear SAM control unit transmits the information for trailer recognition to the PTS control unit (N62) via CAN-B. If a trailer is recognized, the rear PTS is not activated when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear or idle. Otherwise, the trailer would be recognized as an obstacle.

The instrument cluster directly actuates all internal actuators (e.g. indicator and warning lamps, stepper motors of displays, multifunction display) as well as the instrument illumination.

Output of acoustic and information warnings

The instrument cluster actuates the warning buzzer (A1h1) to issue acoustic and information warnings, which are requested by the systems installed in the vehicle.

The "audible turn signal indicator" is realized by actuating the audible turn signal indicator (A1h2).

The electronic compass measures the direction of the near-earth magnetic field and can then determine the current direction of travel.

General

The PTS control unit performs a self-test after switching on the ignition (circuit 15 ON). If no malfunctions or faults are present, this is indicated by the standby bar in the center of the warning indicator.

Activate and deactivate Parktronic system (PTS)

The Parktronic system (PTS) can be switched on and off manually via the PTS OFF switch in the upper control panel control unit. When the Parktronic system (PTS) is switched off, the function LED in the PTS OFF switch comes on; the LED is off when the Parktronic system (PTS) is activated

When the ignition is switched on (circuit 15 ON), the Parktronic system (PTS) is automatically activated even when it was deactivated during the previous ignition cycle.

Operation with trailer

When a trailer is connected, the monitoring function at the rear of the vehicle is deactivated. The rear SAM control unit recognizes the trailer connector and sends a corresponding signal to the PTS control unit.

Visual warning

The brightness of the warning indicators is automatically adapted to the ambient light conditions. If the rain/light sensor indicates "Night", the warning indicators are dimmed. Correspondingly, during the "Day" the warning indicators are actuated at full intensity.

Acoustic warning

When an obstacle is approached, an additional acoustic signal is given simultaneously with illumination of the first red LED. This acoustic signal is output intermittently at a frequency of approx. 6 Hz. When the distance to the obstacle decreases to less than 20 cm or 8 inches, the intermittent tone changes to a continuous tone.

When driving, the Parktronic system (PTS) goes to the standby mode at a speed of less than 40 km/h or 25 mph to 16 km/h or 10 mph, i.e. the PTS control unit, the warning indicators and the sensors continue to be supplied with power, however, can not function

Front monitoring range active (selector lever position "D")

Upon dropping below the minimum speed of 16 km/h or 10 mph, the Parktronic system (PTS) is switched to the measuring mode.

When an obstacle is recognized in front of the vehicle, the driver is first notified by a visual signal consisting of various LED's in the driver-side instrument panel PTS warning indicator. When the interval is reduced to a certain level, an additional acoustic warning is given, starting with an intermediate tone and then a continuous tone (see table below).

Front and rear monitoring area active (Selector lever position "R" or "N")

Task

The sensors in the bumpers are transmitters and receivers for the ultrasonic signals necessary for measuring the distance to an obstacle.

Function

When actuated by the PTS control unit (N62), the sensors emit an ultrasonic signal. After a short decay time the sensors are ready to receive. Each sensor receives the echo of its own signal and that of the other sensors. The distance to the obstacle is calculated from the elapsed time between transmission and reception. The monitoring limits can be obtained from the tables below.

Location

The driver-side instrument panel PTS warning indicator is located in the center console at the top.

The rear dome lamp PTS warning indicator is located in the headliner in the dome lamp.

Design

Each warning indicator contains 10 yellow and 4 red LED's, a standby bar, an acoustic signal and a microprocessor. The microprocessor is responsible for bi-directional data exchange with the PTS control unit (N62)

Task

Upon recognizing an obstacle in front or behind the vehicle, the intervals are first indicated visually by illumination of the yellow LED's, then by illumination of the red LED's and, in addition, by output of an acoustic warning to the driver.

After a successful self-test and up to a speed of 18 km/h or 11 mph, the ready state of the Parktronic system (PTS) is indicated to the driver by illumination of the standby bar.

If the Parktronic system (PTS) recognizes a fault during the self-test or while driving, this is indicated to the driver by illumination of both LED's.
