Function requirements
- All electrical consumers in the vehicle which can be switched off (e.g. air conditioning system, rear window heater, windshield wipers) are switched off
- All doors and the liftgate of the vehicle are closed
- Calibration trip in open terrain (in which it is possible to drive a full circle)
- No antenna masts, bridges, large buildings or power lines in the vicinity of the open terrain
- Correct compass zone of the electronic compass (B26) is set
General
After a break in the voltage supply, e.g. by a disconnected or discharged battery (G1), the electronic compass must be recalibrated
During a calibration trip, it is important that the electronic compass passes through all cardinal points. For this reason, the calibration will be completed fastest when the calibration trip is conducted on a circular path; the tangents on a circle have a different orientation at each point of the circle.
During a calibration trip the electronic compass measures the magnetic relationships of the vehicle. As a result the electronic compass is able to compensate magnetic overlays which otherwise might lead to route errors.
Ferromagnetic materials (e.g. iron and nickel) influence their surrounding magnetic field and thus locally also the earth's magnetic field, which the electronic compass also uses for calibration. Electric currents likewise influence the magnetic field of their surroundings Each conductor through which a current flows is surrounded by a magnetic field, the strength of which is dependent on the amperage. For these reasons the above prerequisites should be observed during calibration
Operating instruction
The electronic compass is calibrated as follows
- Start engine
- Press system selection button (S110s3) repeatedly until menu "Settings" appears on multifunction display (A1p13) of instrument cluster (A1)
- Press + and - button (adjustment of specific functions and volume control (S111s1)) repeatedly until submenu "Vehicle" appears on multifunction display of instrument cluster
- Press scroll forward/back button (S110s1) repeatedly until message "Compass calibration" appears on multifunction display of instrument cluster
- Select "Start" using + and - button (adjustment of specific functions and volume control)
- Message "Compass calibration active Please drive in a complete circle" appears on multifunction display of instrument cluster
- Drive in a circle at a speed of approx. 8 km/h until message "Compass calibration Successfully completed" appears on multifunction display of instrument cluster
If the message "Compass calibration Successfully completed" does not appear on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster after t = 3 min, calibration has failed. In this case the calibration should be carried out at a different location
Function sequence
The control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) are forwarded to the instrument cluster via the following path
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Engine compartment CAN
The electronic compass measures the direction of the near-earth magnetic field and sends the direction information cyclically (every t = 1 s) to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

The electronic compass must be calibrated after a discontinuity in the voltage supply, e.g. due to a disconnected or discharged battery B26) During this process the electronic compass measures the magnetic conditions of the vehicle. As a result the compass is able to compensate for magnetic overlays which otherwise might lead to route errors.
Calibration trip
On the calibration trip it is important that the compass runs through all points of the compass. The calibration is therefore completed most quickly if the calibration trip takes place on a curve; The tangent to a curve has a different orientation at each point of the curve.
Magnetic environment
Ferromagnetic materials (e.g. iron and nickel) influence the magnetic field of their surroundings and thus also locally the earth's magnetic field which the compass also uses for the calibration.
The same also applies to electric currents. Each conductor with a current flowing through it is surrounded by a magnetic field, the strength of which depends on the current.
For these reasons the above conditions should be observed when calibrating.
Calibrating the compass
In order to perform a correct or valid calibration, first the correct zone must be entered or checked, before the calibration trip is started ("vehicle" configuration in combination menu). The current zone (1 to 15), in which the vehicle is located, must be entered. The "CALIBRATION ACTIVE" display and the message with the request "Please drive in a full circle" appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). After successful calibration "successfully completed" appears in the multifunction display and the points of the compass are displayed.

Adjust compass zone (declination)
- Determine corresponding compass zone (1 to 15) by means of the zone maps illustrated below (declination maps).
- Ignition: "ON"
- Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the settings menu appears in the multifunction display (A1p13)
- Press button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1) until the vehicle submenu appears in the multifunction display.
- Press the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) until the message compass setting appears in the multifunction display.
- Press the mode button twice in order to return to the compass display and to store the compass zone displayed.
- Enter compass zone with the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control.
Examples
- San Francisco location: Compass zone 4 can be seen from the North America zone map.
- Berlin location : Compass zone 8 can be seen from the Europe, Africa zone map.
- Bonn location : Compass zone 9 can be seen from the Europe, Africa zone map.
In order to obtain as accurate a route display as possible, under some circumstances it may be necessary, to change the compass zone during a route. For example, two compass zones are driven through on the trip from Bonn to Berlin (cf examples).
Earth's magnetic field
The compass uses the earth's magnetic field to determine the points of the compass.
The earth's magnetic poles (North/South) however deviate slightly from the geographic poles. The earth's magnetic axis is inclined by approx 20° compared with the earth's rotation axis. Should the points of the compass be determined with the aid of the earth's magnetic field, then correction factors have to be taken into account for various earth zones. 15 different compass zones have been calculated for this. The deviation (declination) is roughly the same at each location within a zone.
If the correct compass zone is entered in the compass, then it can correct the earth's magnetic information accordingly and then specify the route relatively accurately (±10°).
