Scheme 1: Identifying NECK-PRO Head Restraint Triggering Device

Task

The NECK-PRO head restraint triggering device activates the driver NECK-PRO head restraint solenoid (Y24/12) and the front passenger NECK-PRO head restraint solenoid (Y24/13) in the event of a rear end collision.

Design

The NECK-PRO head restraint triggering device contains a sensor that registers the acceleration of the vehicle in the event of a rear end collision.

Function

The integral sensor registers the acceleration of the vehicle in the event of a rear end collision and triggers the solenoids when a defined limit value is exceeded.

Identifying NECK-PRO Head Restraint Position. Scheme 3

Scheme 3: Identifying NECK-PRO Head Restraint Position

Task

The NECK-PRO head restraints reduce the distance between the driver's and front passenger's head and the head restraint.

Design

The NECK-PRO head restraints include

  1. the driver NECK-PRO head restraint solenoid (Y24/12)
  2. the front passenger NECK-PRO head restraint solenoid (Y24/13)
  3. as well as the complete triggering mechanism.

Function

The impact plate of the NECK-PRO head restraints is held in the rest position by a locking lever.

In the event of a rear end collision, the magnetic force of attraction that holds the locking lever in position is neutralized by energizing the solenoids.

Thanks to a pre-compressed spring, the impact plate moves forward and at the same time upward. This reduces the distance between the head and the head restraint.

The integrated crash locking devices prevent the impact plate from recoiling, caused by the driver's head being thrown back.

The solenoids are actuated for at least 15 ms to ensure that the NECK-PRO head restraints are triggered.

Resetting of the NECK-PRO head restraints

If during an accident the NECK-PRO head restraints were triggered, the NECK-PRO head restraints can be reset using a reset tool.

Driver/front passenger-side frontal acceleration sensor, component description - GF91.60-P-4033T

MODELS 211.0/ 2

Shown on model 211.0

Location

The frontal acceleration sensors are located on the front module.

Scheme 4

Scheme 41: Identifying Driver/Front Passenger-Side Frontal Acceleration Sensor

Task

  1. The frontal acceleration sensor determine the acceleration value of the vehicle front for the left or the right side of the vehicle. The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) uses these values to decide, whether or not the emergency tensioning retractors or the airbags are triggered. In the event of a failure of the frontal acceleration sensor, the system continues to evaluate the signal of the frontal acceleration sensor that is still working.
  2. After a successful self-test of the frontal acceleration sensor, the success is confirmed by transmitting a signal to the restraint systems control unit.
  3. If the self-test fails four times, a defective frontal acceleration sensor is signaled.
  4. Upon request of the restraint systems control unit, the measuring range and the sensitivity of the frontal acceleration sensors are transmitted, and it is checked whether they match the programmed equipment. The production data can be output via STAR DIAGNOSIS.
  5. The acceleration values are transmitted periodically as a digital value.

Scheme 5: Identifying Driver/Front Passenger Sidebag And Windowbag Sensor

Task

  1. The sidebag and windowbag sensors determine the acceleration values, which occur in the area of the B-pillar of the left or right side of the vehicle, in order to recognize a side impact early on.
  2. After a successful self-test, the success is confirmed by the sidebag and windowbag sensor by transmitting a signal to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).
  3. If the self-test fails four times, a defective sidebag and windowbag sensor is signaled.
  4. Upon request of the restraint systems control unit, the measuring range and the sensitivity of the sidebag and windowbag sensor are transmitted, and it is checked whether they match the programmed equipment. The production data can be output via STAR DIAGNOSIS.

MODELS 211.0 /2 up to 31.5.05 except CODE (494) USA version

MODELS 211.0 /2 as of 1.6.05 with CODE (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR)

Location

The seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition is integrated in the seat cushion of the front passenger seat.

Identifying Front Passenger Seat Occupied And Child Seat Recognition Sensor. Scheme 6

Scheme 6: Identifying Front Passenger Seat Occupied And Child Seat Recognition Sensor

Tasks

The seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition determines and recognizes a child seat with an installed transponder and its direction of installation. Moreover, the seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition can recognize, whether or not the front passenger seat is occupied by a person and can decide, whether the person is heavy or lightweight. With the aid of the weight classification of the front passenger, the system decides which restraint systems are necessary to be triggered.

As of 1.6.05 the weight classification of the front passenger is omitted

Function

Child seat recognition

The functionality of the automatic child seat recognition is only given where a DaimlerChrysler approved and control unit coded child seat is used.

This child seat must be equipped with two transponders (resonators), which are located in its base on the left and right.

When a child seat is in position, the signals, which the electronic analysis system sends via the transmitting antennas in the sensor mat, are changed by the resonators located in the child seat. The signals are picked up by the respective receiving antennae in the sensor mat and sent to the electronic analysis system. The electronic analysis system evaluates the signals and signals to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7), whether or not a child seat is installed, whether the child seat was positioned incorrectly, or whether it was installed forward-facing or rear-facing.

Seat occupied recognition (up to 31.5.05)

If the front passenger seat is occupied by a person, the pressure load of the seat area increases. This pressure load is sensed by the integrated force sensing resistors in the seat cushion and allocated to the corresponding weight classification. Depending upon the weight classification, a signal is transmitted to the restraint systems control unit and evaluated by the system. This helps to decide which restraint systems are necessary to be triggered.

Weight classification of the front passenger

Lightweight person: Triggering the first ignition stage

Heavy person: Triggering the first and second ignition stage

Seat occupied recognition (as of 1.6.05)

If the front passenger seat is occupied by a person, the pressure load of the seat area increases. This pressure load is recognized by the force sensing resistors integrated in the seat cushions. This helps to decide which restraint systems are necessary to be triggered.
