A data bus connects the individual control units and enables them to exchange data.

The signal from a sensor is passed on to the nearest control unit, processed by it and placed on the CAN data bus.

Each control unit that is connected to the CAN data bus can read this signal and use it to calculate an input to control an actuator.

Scheme 33: Data Bus System, Block Function Diagram

All control units are interlinked through the CAN data bus.

A control unit receives a measured value from a sensor, prepares a data telegram from this and places it on the CAN data bus.

All other control units can then read and process this data packet.

Data bus system, advantages - GF54.00-P-0004-04A

With the former wiring of the individual electrical and electronic components (standard wiring) each control unit is directly connected to all sensors and actuators, from which it obtains measured values or which it actuates.

In some cases, this can result in long or redundant cable runs. The data bus system affords the following advantages relative to conventional wiring

DATA Bus System AdvantagesNotes
Lower cost of wiringLines from sensors must only be lead to the nearest control unit where the measured values are processed to form a data telegram and are placed on the CAN data bus. Actuators can also receive control signals from a different control unit which receives the data telegram through the CAN bus and then uses this information to calculate a control parameter for the actuator.
Improved electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
Fewer plug connections
Fewer pins on the control units
Weight saving
Fewer sensorsSignals from one sensor (e. g ECT sensor) can be used several times
Better diagnosisSince signals from one sensor can be received by several receivers (e.g. vehicle speed signal), it can be assumed if a fault is displayed by all systems which use a particular signal, that the sensor is defective or that the control unit which processes the signal is faulty. If only one system displays a fault, even though the signal is used several times, the fault is usually at the processing control unit or at the actuator.
Fast transmission ratesUp to 1 Mbit/s with a line length of max. 40 m (not currently in use at Mercedes Benz). Mercedes Benz uses transfer rates from 83 kbit/s up to 500 kbit/s.
Several messages can be transferred in succession on the same line

The CAN data bus ( C ontroller A rea N etwork) is a data bus system specifically designed for used in vehicles.

The CAN data bus is a bi-directional bus, that is, each connected control unit is able to send and receive information.

The CAN data bus consists of a special twisted two-core cable. The users (control units) are connected to this cable. Transmission of data takes place redundantly via both cables, whereby the data bus levels are mirrored (that is, if the level on one cable is 0, the other cable transmits level 1 and vice versa). Two-line operation is used for two reasons: for fault detection and as a safety concept.

If a voltage peak occurs on just one line (e.g. due to EMC problems), the receivers can identify this as a fault and ignore the voltage peak.

If a short circuit or a discontinuity occurs on one of the two CAN lines, then due to a safety concept coupled to the software/hardware, the system can change over to single-line operation. The defective data line is shut down.

A specific data protocol controls how and when the participants can send and receive.

The CAN data bus is significantly different to other data bus systems that are based on the participant addressing principle, in that it uses a message-related addressing system.

That means, every CAN message is assigned a fixed address (identifier), which identifies the CAN message content (e.g. coolant temperature). The CAN log permits up to 2048 different CAN messages, the addresses of 2033 to 2048 being permanently assigned. Data capacity per CAN message is 8 bytes.

A recipient only evaluates those CAN messages (data messages) which are stored in its list of CAN messages to be accepted (acceptance filtering).

Data messages can only be sent when the CAN data bus is free (i.e. once a 3 bit interval has elapsed after the last data message, and no control unit starts to send). The data bus level is then in recessive state (logical 1).

If several control units simultaneously start to send, a procedure is applied whereby the CAN message with the highest priority takes precedence, without loss of time or bits (attributing).

Each control unit which looses the attributing becomes a receiver automatically and repeats its transmission attempt as soon as the CAN data bus is free again.

Besides data messages, there is also a request message used for calling a particular CAN message.

The control unit that can provide the requested data message then reacts to the request.

CAN data bus data telegram - GF54.00-P-0005-01A

During normal operation, messages consist of the following transfer frames

  1. Data frame for transmitting CAN messages (such as coolant temperature, etc.).
  2. Remote frame for requesting CAN data from a different control unit.
  3. Error frame informs all connected control units that an error has occurred and that the most recent CAN message is invalid.

The CAN protocol supports two different data frame formats, with the only difference residing in the length of the identifier

  1. Standard format
  2. Expanded format

Only the standard format is currently in use at DaimlerChrysler.

CAN Data Bus Telegram. Scheme 34

Scheme 34: CAN Data Bus Telegram

The data telegram for transmitting CAN messages through the CAN data bus consists of seven sequential blocks

  1. Start of Frame: (Start bit) Marks the start of a CAN message and synchronizes all stations.
  2. Arbitration Field: (identifier and) request) This field consists of the identifier (address) with 11 bits and one control bit (remote transmission request bit). This control bit indicates if the message contains a data frame or a remote frame without bytes.
  3. Control Field: (control bits) To distinguish between the standard and expanded format the control field (6 bit) contains a reserved bit for future expansions and the number of bytes contained in the data field in the last 4 bits.
  4. Data Field: (data) The data field can contain between 0 and 8 bytes of data. A CAN message with a length of 0 can be employed to synchronize distributed processes.
  5. CRC Field: (check field) The CRC Field (Cyclic-Redundancy-check field) consists of 16 bits and is used to detect transmission errors.
  6. ACK Field: (receipt confirmation) The ACK Field (Acknowledgment Field) contains a confirmation signal from all receivers that have received the CAN message without error.
  7. End of Frame: (frame end) Identifies the end of the data telegram
  1. Intermission: (Intermission) Interval between two data telegrams The interval must contain at least 3 bits. The next message can then be sent by any control unit.
  2. IDLE: (idle) If no control unit transmits, the CAN data bus remains idle until the next message is sent.

CAN data bus fault recognition - GF54.00-P-0005-03A

Faults which occur during data transfer can result in errors. These transmission errors must therefore be detected and rectified. A distinction is made between two levels of fault identification in the CAN protocol

  1. Mechanisms at the data frame level
  2. Mechanisms at the bit level

Mechanisms at the data frame level

Cyclic redundancy check

The transmitter establishes test bits from the CAN messages that are to be sent in the data telegram "CRC Field" The receiver calculates these test bits from the received CAN message and compares them to the received test bits.

Frame check

This mechanism checks the structure of the transferred frame by comparing the bit fields with the specified fixed format and frame length.

Errors detected using the frame check are referred to as format errors.

Mechanisms at the bit level

Monitoring

During transmission every station observes the CAN data bus gauge and recognizes the difference between sent and received bits. Both global and local bit errors which occur at the sending unit can therefore be detected.

Bit stuffing

In each message, a maximum of 5 successive bits may have the same polarity between the "start of frame" and the end of the "CRC field". After 5 consecutive identical bits, the sending unit inserts a bit of the opposite polarity into the bit stream. The receiver removes these bits again after the CAN message reception.

Error handling

If any station on the CAN data bus detects an error, it interrupts the current transmission by sending an error message. The error message consists of 6 dominant bits.

When an error message appears a local error is distributed to all the connected control units so that they ignore the transmitted CAN message.

After a short interruption the other control units can transmit CAN messages again according to their priority.

The control unit whose CAN message caused the error also begins to send its CAN message again (Automatic Repeat Request).

Task

  1. Data interchange between the individual control units
  2. Readying sensor signals for several systems
  3. Reducing the number of wires
  4. Improving the electromagnetic compatibility

Design

The data bus consists of a twisted, two-core data line which connects all the participants together in a parallel circuit. The data line lines must not be mixed up (low or high level). The ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (except model 124 and model 140), the DAS [FBS] control unit (N73/1) (model 129), the DAS [FBS] radio frequency/infrared control unit (N54/4) (model 129) and the DAS [FBS] radio frequency control unit (N54/3) (model 170) are regarded as terminals as far as bus adaptation is concerned. A terminating resistor of 120 ohms is fitted in each case. Exception: ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) with engine 120 (each fitted with 240 ohms).

When measuring the resistance on the data line (circuit 15 OFF), the various terminating resistors in the terminals are connected in parallel

Scheme 36

Scheme 36

Function

The data are transmitted digitally on the data bus at various intervals. The individual data blocks are defined in a protocol and this also states which data are received or transmitted by a control unit. Each connected control unit is able to transmit or receive data.

The total of the data blocks, the short pause between 2 transmission intervals and further properties of the data bus are checked constantly. Any faults detected are stored.

Vehicles with EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)

In the vehicle a distinction is made between a fast Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) and Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) which is 6 times slower. The EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) forms the interface (Gateway) for this. This does not apply to vehicles with a central gateway control unit (N93) (except model 203).

Vehicles with central gateway control unit (N93)

The central gateway control unit forms the interface (Gateway) between the two data buses (N93) (except model 203). The central gateway control unit (N93) serves as the interface for STAR DIAGNOSIS for all model series.

The new control unit must be coded again when exchanging control unit. The control unit can be coded via a menu in the handheld tester (up to 07/99) or via STAR DIAGNOSIS

  2. Readying sensor signals for several systems
  3. Reducing the number of electric cables
  4. Improving the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

The CAN data bus consists of a special twisted two-core data line that connects all CAN users (control units) in parallel.

Scheme 9: Networking Of Components

The battery control unit (N82) is integrated in the power supply of the vehicle. The battery control unit increases the availability of the vehicle power supply by introducing energy management measures.

To do this, it determines the load capacity of the battery (G1).

The battery control unit (N82) is planned for a 14-V-on-board electrical system with the battery (G1), which is designed as a 12-V-lead battery (AGM-or wet battery). The additional battery (G1/7) is connected for charging if necessary in order to assist the onboard electrical system in particular situations. Via the additional battery relay (K57/2) the additional battery (G1/7) can be connected through the battery control unit (N82).

Function conditions

The battery control unit (N82) operates within the specified voltage and temperature limits when the on-board voltage is supplied.

Connection of electrical devices (consumers or chargers in the broadest sense) direct to the battery post of the battery (G1) while bypassing the current sensor is not permissible.

Function sequence

The battery control unit (N82) records the current from the negative terminal of the battery (G1) or if the additional battery (G1/7) is connected, the current from both batteries The voltage of the battery (G1) is determined via circuit 30 which simultaneously serves the supply of the battery control unit (N82). An internal temperature supply of the battery control unit (N82). An internal temperature sensor is used to draw conclusions about the temperature of the battery (G1)

The voltage of the auxiliary battery (G1/7) is also measured.

Should the battery (G1) and/or the additional battery (G1/7)be replaced, then only the replacement parts used by DaimlerChrysler AG be used

The buffer algorithm continuously determines the dynamic internal resistance of the battery (G1) from the recorded current and voltage values. When the alternator (G2) is running this is the basic parameter for the following functions

  1. Consumer shutoff
  2. Idle speed increase
  3. Activation of additional battery (G1/7)

The maximum current demand of the vehicle is limited to I > or = 100 A by switching off consumers. A calculation is also made as to which state of charge prevails when the battery is loaded (G1) with I = 100 A. This is a measure for the load capacity of the battery (G1). If the alternator (G2) fails, 100 % of the power required is provided by the battery (G1).

The effective characteristics of the battery control unit (N82) is determined by the overall condition of the vehicle and determined in the integral linking part.

The battery control unit (N82) actuates both the cutoff relay for interruptible loads (K75) directly to deactivate the consumer socket as well as the additional battery relay (K57/2) to activate the additional battery (G1/7).

Once the battery has been disconnected (G1) the vehicle must be started because this is how the battery control unit (N82) determines the start value for internal battery resistance

The battery control unit (N82) is not able to predict battery defects

Consumer shutoff

In the event of problems in the two-battery on-board electrical system various messages are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1).

If the battery control unit (N82) detects a fault in the power consumption or a poor condition of the battery (G1), the driver is informed through the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) about the corresponding charge level.

Messages which are displayed in the color white, only have information functions, so that consumers which do not impair driving safety are switched off until the overall condition of the on-board electrical system has stabilized again.

Amongst others the consumer shutoff is signaled by the flashing on and off of the switched-on heated rear window or heated seats.

The following messages can be displayed in white in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the Instrument cluster (A1)

  1. Message "MALFUNCTION:ELECTRICAL CONSUMER SWITCHED OFF" (up to 08.2003) "Battery protection, comfort functions temporarily switched off" (as of 09.2003)

The charge level of the battery is too low (G1).

Cutout stage 1 is activated at a voltage of approx. > 11 V.

Cutout stage 2 is activated at a voltage of approx. > 10.5 V.

The following messages are displayed in red in the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)

  1. Messages "BATTERY/ALTERNATOR - CONSULT WORKSHOP" and simultaneously "ELECTRICAL CONSUMER SWITCHED OFF" (up to 08.2003)
  2. "Locate workshop" in conjunction with the battery symbol in the display (as of 09.2003), the signal of circuit 61 cannot be read in via the interior CAN. The message appears, if the battery control unit (N82) is defective, the alternator (G2), the additional battery relay (K57/2) or the additional battery (G1/7) are defective.
  3. When the "STOP BATTERY/ALTERNATOR" message appears the additional battery (G1/7) is activated for the on-board limp home and simultaneously a consumer shutoff conducted. This message appears when the vehicle rolls without the engine and the battery is flat (G1) or when the engine is running the additional battery (G1/7) is connected but the on-board electrical system is still unstable.

The two-battery on-board electrical system can be diagnosed via STAR DIAGNOSTIC

The temperature of the bus bar is used to determine the temperature of the battery (G1). The voltage of the auxiliary battery (G1/7) is also measured. This data and the history of the battery are used to determine the working capacity of the battery (G1).

Together with the data of the overall vehicle, which is received by the interior CAN, the following measures are implemented for stabilization of the on-board electrical system

  1. Consumer group 1 switched off
  2. Consumer group 2 switched off
  3. Accessory socket switched off
  4. Idle speed increase
  5. Auxiliary battery (G1/7) cuts in for limp-home mode

Rain sensor/light sensor, function - GF54.21-P-4123-04Q

Presentation of function overview of rain/light sensor

Identifying Infrared Transmitter And IR Receiver. Scheme 62

Scheme 62: Identifying Infrared Transmitter And IR Receiver

Function principle

Function requirements

  1. Circuit 15R ON

Function principle

Infrared light is radiated from the IR transmitter unit (2) and guided to the windshield (4) via the lens (1). The intensity of the light reflected at the windshield (4) is measured by the IR-receiver unit (3) which is located at the other end of the lens (1)

  1. The windshield (4) is dry (Fig. A) If the windshield is dry in the area of the rain/light sensor, the light is almost completely reflected: the IR receiver unit (3) measures a high light intensity.
  2. Windshield (4) is wet (Fig.B) If there is moisture on the windshield (4) in the area of the reflection surface, part of the light is diffused from the glass on to the windshield (4). As a result the intensity of the reflected light reduces: the IR receiver unit (3) measures a lower light intensity. The light intensity measured by the IR receiver (3) is a measure for the quantity of water on the windshield (4) The smaller the measured intensity the larger the quantity of water on the windshield (4).

Reading out via the rain/light sensor

The rain/light is connected with the interior CAN via the overhead control panel control module as interface

The front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (model 209) or driver-side SAM control module with fuse and relay module (model 211) or left front SAM control module (models 215, 220) transmits a request to the rain/light sensor via the interior CAN, this then conveys the instantaneous degree of wetting for each request.

The automatic driving light actuation actuates the low beam in the following cases

  1. Dusk
  2. Darkness
  3. Driving through tunnels

and in the case of a detected sensor failure.

The above-mentioned switch-on conditions are considered separately and the driving lights are switched on when at least one of the conditions is met.

A detection of fog is not recognized. In fog the driving lights must continue to be switched on manually

Measurement and compensation

Via the serial interface the rain/light sensor receives information as to which wiper system it should actuate (reversing wiper system or two-stage), or whether the driving light should be switched on and emits the signals necessary for actuation

The data link connector (X11/4) is a 16-pin connector with a plastic housing.

Instrument cluster, function

Instrument cluster (A1) provides a visual display of all the dynamic and static vehicle states and driver information relating to all the systems fitted to the vehicle

  1. Displays the operating states of the vehicle, e.g. speed, fuel level, coolant temperature, engine speed.
  2. for warning of critical operating states by means of warning and malfunction indicator lamps
  3. central display for various systems, e.g. audio, telephone.
  4. display for the "Active Service System PLUS" (ASSYST PLUS).
  5. Trip computer (TRIP)

The instrument cluster (A1) has a multifunction display (A1p13), various display instruments as well as various warning and indicator lamps for a visual display of these states. The instrument cluster (A1) has the warning buzzer (A1h1) as well as the audible turn signal indicator (A1h2) for chimes. For the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) or the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) various signals, e.g. vehicle speed are generated and passed on by the instrument cluster (A1). The required information is passed on to the instrument cluster (A1) from various control units via CAN C or CAN B, except the signal for the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15). This signal is transmitted via a discreet line.

The instrument cluster (A1) displays a warning when the remaining distance or the remaining time to the next service is reached. The instrument cluster (A1) informs the driver about an imminent service appointment or one which has already been overrun in the form of a warning message. Irrespective of this the vehicle user can have displayed in the service menu in certain operating conditions of the vehicle this and other information upon inquiry at the instrument cluster (A1).

The instrument cluster (A1) contains a microprocessor to process the incoming data. The program required for processing the data is stored in an electronic memory module. With the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) various menu items can be actuated using the system selection button (S110s3) and the scroll forward/back button (S110s1).

  2. Keep the instrument illumination rheostat and reset button (A1r1) pressed for approx. 20 s to 30 s or 3 times within 2.5 s until the beep is audible.
  3. Press the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) once in the (↑) direction. The rolling test display appears.
  4. Switch on rolling test using the + and -, specific function setting and volume control button (S111s1). The dynamometer test remains active, even if "circuit 15R ON" has been switched off in the meantime until it is switched off with the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1).

Instrument cluster (IC), networking of components - GF54.30-P-0002-06T

Function overview

The instrument cluster (A1) is networked with the engine compartment CAN and the interior CAN. Data is exchanged with virtually all the control units over the two bus systems.

However, the instrument cluster (A1) does not act as an interface (gateway) between the two data bus systems. This function is reserved for the central gateway control unit (N93)

This document lists the principal CAN messages for the functions of the instrument cluster (A1) including the trip computer and ASSYST PLUS system.

The connections of the instrument cluster (A1) are described in the last part of this document.

The input signals are supplied by the following components

  1. The wheel speeds from the ESP control unit (N47-5) via the CAN engine compartment
  2. The engine speed signal from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN

  15. The left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) on the multifunction steering wheel.

The following input signals are required for indicator and warning lamps

  1. Signal for left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)
  2. Signal for high beam indicator lamp (A1e3) from the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN, for turn signals from the steering column module (N80) via the interior CAN, for hazard warning flashers from lower control panel control unit (N72) via the interior CAN, for ATA flashing from driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN

The airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is not actuated via the CAN bus but via a discreet line

Reception messages for the multifunction display (A1p13)

All the signals for the messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) are received over the engine compartment CAN or interior CAN.

Information about the signal paths and other details concerning the individual messages can be found in the function descriptions for the relevant systems.

The following transmitted messages are sent by the instrument cluster (A1)

  1. Displayed speed to passenger compartment CAN
  2. Current time to the interior CAN
  3. Temperature units (Celsius and Fahrenheit) to the interior CAN.
  4. Headlamp switching manual/always-on (ON/OFF) to the interior CAN.
  5. Interior light courtesy delay to the interior CAN
  6. Headlamp switch-off delay to the interior CAN
  7. Outside temperature signal to the engine compartment CAN
  8. "Terminal 58d" to the CAN engine compartment and CAN interior
  9. "Terminal 61e" to the CAN engine compartment
  10. Engine OFF time to the engine compartment CAN.
  11. Winter tires maximum speed to the engine compartment CAN.

CAN messages of pushbuttons of multifunction steering wheel

In view of the fact that the pushbuttons of the multifunction steering wheel perform several functions, the signals of these pushbuttons must be conditioned accordingly

  1. All the buttons of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) are voltage-coded and are read in by the steering column module (N80).
  2. The steering column module (N80) passes the relevant messages on the interior CAN.
  3. These CAN messages are received by the instrument cluster (A1). On vehicles with model designation 211.067 and 211.267, the messages from the steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) and steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1) switches are received by the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5). The electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) processes these messages and sends CAN messages with the gear and transmission mode information to the instrument cluster (A1).
  4. The instrument cluster (A1) interprets these messages in combination with the systems displayed at that moment in the multifunction display (A1p13) and puts these interpreted messages as a message back on the interior CAN.

This interpretation is necessary as the function of certain pushbuttons depends on the current contents of the multifunction display

Example

If the driver presses the + and -, specific function setting and volume control button (S111s1) of the multifunction steering wheel, this usually increases the volume. However, if the multifunction display (A1p13) is currently displaying another setting such as the interior light courtesy delay, this setting is changed when the driver presses the "+" pushbutton. The volume stays the same.

Connections

Linking the instrument cluster (A1) to the engine compartment CAN and the interior CAN has reduced the number of inputs and outputs.

The inputs and outputs (including voltage supply) are at the following connections

  1. CAN-C Low (engine compartment CAN)
  2. CAN-C high (engine compartment CAN)
  3. CAN-B Low (passenger compartment CAN)
  4. CAN-B high (interior CAN)
  5. "Circuit 31" (ground)
  6. "Terminal 30" (battery positive, supplies voltage to almost all the electronics of the instrument cluster (A1)).
  7. "Terminal 15g" (switched positive, serves the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) and diagnostic interface of the instrument cluster (A1) as a voltage supply)
  8. Clock GND, ground to external clock module.
  9. "Terminal 15g" control input for limp-home
  10. Clock supply, output and battery.
  11. Data line for external clock.
  12. Input for airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15); this input is directly connected to the corresponding output of the restraint systems control unit (N2/7)

Scheme 72: Instrument Cluster Activation - Communication Diagram

Activating the instrument cluster (A1)

Due to the Black-Screen technology the instrument cluster details (A1) (e.g. displays, display instruments) are only clearly visible when the instrument cluster (A1) is activated. If the instrument cluster (A1) is activated, the current contents are shown in the displays, the illumination of the instrument cluster (A1) is switched on and the fuel reserve indicator lamp (A1e4) is actuated.

The instrument cluster (A1) is activated by switching on "Circuit 15g". Once "Circuit 15g" is switched off "circuit 15g" the instrument cluster (A1) remains active for a further 30 s, but this period can be extended to 2 minutes in the event of active warnings occurring.

The instrument cluster (A1) is activated under the following conditions with "circuit 15g OFF"

  1. By pressing the instrument illumination rheostat and reset button (A1r1) the instrument cluster (A1) is activated for 30 s
  2. The instrument cluster (A1) is activated for 30 s by opening or closing the driver's door
  3. When the standing lamp or driving lamps are switched on the instrument cluster (A1) remains in operation as long as the standing lamp is switched on If one of the stated conditions occurs whilst the instrument cluster (A1) is already active, then the instrument cluster (A1) remains activated for a further 30 seconds from this point in time. The instrument cluster (A1) cannot be operated using the buttons of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

Networking

The status of the left front door contact switch (S17/3) (on left-hand drive vehicles) or of the right front door contact switch (S17/4) (on right-hand drive vehicles) is read in by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) and placed on the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) as a Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) message.

The status of the standing lamp "ON/OFF" is placed on CAN B by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Activating instrument cluster lighting

The illumination of the instrument cluster (A1) switches on automatically when activated. The details of the instrument cluster (A1) are only now clearly visible due to the Black-Screen technology. The instrument cluster (A1) is activated when the following events occur

  1. Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) message "standing lamps ON"
  2. Circuit 15R ON
  3. user input at the trip odometer reset button (A1s3)
  4. Driver door is opened
  5. Driver door is closed

The intensity of the lighting is dependent on

  1. The CAN message from the rain/light sensor (B38/2)
  2. the status of "circuit 58d" (standing lamp information)
  3. The position of the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1)

Controlling the display lighting

With the CAN message "standing lamp ON" the current position of the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1) is transmitted via the Controller Area network bus Class B (interior) (CAN B). In this state, the signal from the rain/light sensor (B38/2) via the overhead control panel control unit (N70) is disregarded.

Controlling display lighting by means of sensor

"Circuit 58d" is set to 0 % by the CAN message "Standing lamp OFF". Because of this, the CAN message from the rain/light sensor (B38/2) via the overhead control panel control unit (N70) is processed as a control variable and converted.

The intensity of the display is dependent only on the ambient brightness detected by the rain/light sensor (B38/2). In the event of a defect in the rain/light sensor (B38/2) "Circuit 58d" is set to 100 % by the overhead control panel control unit (N70) The display brightness is now adjustable via the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1).

Function requirements

The switch and controls illumination is activated by the following components

  1. Switching on the vehicle lighting (as long as the standing lamp is active)
  2. With the automatic driving lamps via the rain/light sensor (B38/2) and "AUTO" position of the rotary light switch (S1)

When the standing lamp switched on the position of the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1) is used as a controlled variable by the overhead control panel control unit (N70), the rain/light sensor (B38/2) is not taken into account. If automatic running lights are set the intensity of the switch and controls illumination is determined by the rain/light sensor (B38/2). Its signals are evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit (N70) and placed on the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B).

All the control units which require the signal from the rain/light sensor (B38/2) pick up the signal from CAN-B.

Presentation of duty cycle

Presentation Of Duty Cycle. Scheme 74

Scheme 74: Presentation Of Duty Cycle

Terminal 58d on/off ratio

The lamps of the switch and controls illumination are actuated by means of a square-wave voltage U 58d (see top illustration)

  1. The lamps are energized for the period (t 1 ),followed by a break. After the pause they are energized again, and so on. The change occurs so quickly as to remain imperceptible to the human eye.
  2. The ratio of times t 1 to T is called the duty cycle. where T is the constant cycle duration and t 1 is the time during which power flows during a cycle.
  3. The greater the duty cycle (that is to say the power flow duration t 1 )), the greater the average power and therefore the brighter the lamps.

The voltage curve U 58d is sketched in the illustration as it is applied to the outputs "Circuit 58d" of the various control units. The upper sketch shows a duty cycle of 80 %, the lower a duty cycle of 40 %. A duty cycle of 100 % corresponds to normal direct voltage.

Power is not supplied when the duty cycle is 0 %. Advantages of this type of illumination adjustment

  1. Greater efficiency
  2. the intensity of the illumination provided by the lamps remains independent of the number of lamps
  3. Each control unit which is connected to the CAN-B o Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) and actuates lamps, actuates these lamps with the brightness specified by the instrument cluster (A1) When the standing lamp is "OFF" the instrument cluster (A1) transmits the message "duty cycle circuit 58d = 0 %". When the standing lamp is "ON" the transmitted duty cycle is adjusted in the range of 12 to 100 % using the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1).

Turn signal indicator lamps

The left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) is integrated in the instrument cluster (A1) for an optical check. These are activated differently according to function. During operation as directional indicators only one of the two indicator lamps is triggered. The signal for actuating the respective indicator lamp comes from the steering column module (N80) to the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) via the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) CAN B. In the event of the failure of a turn signal lamp the corresponding indicator lamp in the instrument cluster (A1) is actuated at twice the frequency. With hazard warning flashing and with antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) flashing, the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are actuated. The request for the hazard warning system is output by the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) after the hazard warning system switch (N72/1s5) is pressed.

The signal for actuating the warning lamps in the hazard warning system switch (N72/1s5) comes from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) via CAN B. The signal to actuate the ATA flashing comes from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) via CAN B.

While direction signaling is only possible when circuit 15 is switched ON, the other types of turn signal modes are also possible when circuit 15 is switched OFF. An acoustic signal accompanies the rhythmic flashing of the indicator lamp (A1h2)

When different demands for flasher operation are present, the system assigns hierarchical priorities in the following sequence

  1. Electronic alarm system flashers (highest priority)
  2. Hazard warning flashers (2nd priority)
  3. Turn indicators (3rd priority)

The turn signal confirmation when unlocking or locking the vehicle is handled like hazard warning flashing

High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)

With "High beam ON" and headlamp flasher the actuation takes place by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via CAN B.

Low beam indicator lamp (A1e67) as of 1.6.05

After receipt of the message via CAN B with "low beam ON" the actuation takes place by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module.

Fuel reserve indicator lamp (A1e4)

The fuel reserve indicator lamp (A1e4) lights up when the fuel level sinks to the reserve level. Control of this lamp is linked to the fuel level and reserve gage (A1p2).

Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7)

This warning lamp is actuated if the parking brake is not released at the start of a journey or the brake fluid drops below the minimum level.

The signal for actuating the brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) comes from the Driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via CAN B.

Fasten seat belts warning lamp (A1e9)

The seat belt warning light (A1e9) is not installed in all national versions.

Version Warning lamp "ON" Warning tone "ON"

ECE t = 6 s from engine operation t = 93 s from engine operation

USA t = 6 s from engine operation t = 6 s from engine operation

Japan t = 6 s from "circuit 15 ON" t = 6 s from "circuit 15 ON"

On the driver's side a seat belt buckle which is not inserted is detected by the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/1). The warning tone sounds for t = 6 s. It ends sooner if during this time the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/1) a seat belt buckle which has been inserted.

The seat belt warning lamp lights up when the circuit status is "Circuit 61 ON", the vehicle speed is >25 km/h, the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected a person or a child seat and the Front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is not closed. The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) goes out as soon as the Front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is closed.

In the USA seat occupation is detected by the WSS (Weight Sensing System) control unit (N2/13)

Safety system lamps

The airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is triggered when there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system (SRS). It is triggered directly by the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). The ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) is actuated if there is a fault in the antilock brake system (ABS).

The signal for actuating the lamp comes from the ESP, SPS [PML] and BAS control unit (N47-5) via the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN C). Depending on country variant, vehicles are equipped with either the engine diagnosis malfunction indicator lamp (A1e58) or the CHECK ENGINE malfunction indicator lamp (A1e26). The lamp is actuated if there is a fault in the injection system, the ignition system or the exhaust emission system. The signal for actuating the lamp comes from the CDI control unit (N3/9) or ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) via CAN C.

DTR warning lamp (A1e59)

The DTR warning lamp (A1e59) lights up white when a vehicle driving in front is detected. It lights up red if the safe distance is not maintained. An acoustic signal also sounds. The signal for actuating the lamp comes from the DTR control unit (N63/1) via CAN C.

Light sources

The high beam indicator lamp (A1e3), the low beam indicator lamp (A1e67) (as of 1.6.05) and the preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) are equipped with bulbs as the means of lighting. All other indicator and warning lamps in the instrument cluster (A1) are equipped with light emitting diodes (LED).

Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66)

In addition for an output on the multifunction display (A1p13) the tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66) lights up yellow when a rapid pressure loss of > or = 0.2 bar/min is detected. The signal for actuating the lamp comes from the TPM [RDK] control unit (N88) via CAN B.

Apart from the actuations described above all the indicator and warning lamps are also actuated on the lamp test with the exception of the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1), right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) and high beam indicator lamp (A1e3). As of 1.6.05 the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is likewise no longer actuated

Triggering and illumination of some indicator and warning lamps (such as the engine diagnosis indicator lamp A1e58) is accompanied by the appearance of a malfunction message in the right-side multifunction display (A1p13). While some categories of message can be acknowledged and canceled, the warning and indicator lamps remain on for as long as the problem remains present. These indications cannot be canceled!

Partitioning of displays

The lower status area consists of the gear indicator (A1p12) and transmission mode display (A1p16) which are located as follows

  1. The selected transmission mode is displayed on the left
  2. The selected drive position used is displayed on the right

The center status area consists of the multifunction display (A1p13). In the basic screen layout, the outside temperature and the trip odometer are displayed in this area; the display can be configured.

Display priority

Which displays and functions appear depends on the current situation and priority. The instrument cluster (A1) differentiates between the primary and secondary priority of each message. The multifunction display (A1p13) first shows the messages in the sequence of the respective main priority. If there are several equal messages, the value of the sub-priority decides the display sequence.

New messages have the highest priority. After it has been displayed once, the message is entered in the display sequence. The messages are divided into the following three categories according to their priority.

  1. Messages of the highest priority belong to category 1. These messages cannot be acknowledged. When they occur, a brief warning tone is sounded. Any errors of categories 2 and 3 are hidden.
  2. Messages of medium priority belong to category 2. These messages can be acknowledged and canceled using the instrument illumination rheostat and reset knob (A1r1). When they occur, a brief warning tone is sounded. Any faults of category 3 are hidden.
  3. Messages of the lowest priority belong to category 3. These messages can be acknowledged and canceled using the instrument illumination rheostat and reset knob (A1r1). There is no warning tone.

The method of functioning of the CNG fuel tank display for the engine M271 is described in detail in the CNG (compressed natural gas) system description

Fault storage

The messages are stored in 3 roll memories according to their priority

  1. U roll
  2. W roll
  3. N roll

U roll

This is the directory of all unacknowledged warning messages displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13). Displays of the same of a higher priority are displayed once the minimum display time of the preceding message has elapsed. Once the minimum display time for the warning with the lowest secondary priority has elapsed the fault roll starts again with the warning with the highest main priority (ring memory).

W roll

This is where all the acknowledged errors that occurred while driving are entered. It can be called up as required from the menu tree on the multifunction display (A1p13). When the roll is called up, a start screen showing the number of errors that occurred is first displayed, followed by the errors in main priority sequence.

N roll

After disconnecting terminal 15R, all messages entered in the error roll are automatically called up in the N roll in secondary priority sequence. The number of errors entered in shown in the start screen. The warning buzzer (A1h1) sounds briefly when the start screen is displayed. The displayed messages must be acknowledged. The N roll stops when all the warnings have been acknowledged. If there are messages entered or if all the entered messages are acknowledged, the multifunction display (A1p13) is switched off after 30 s. If some messages have still not been acknowledged, the display will stay on for 2 minutes.

If the N roll is interrupted by a higher priority message, it starts again with the start screen.

Some messages (including dynamic curve illumination) are accompanied by the lighting of a warning or indicator lamp. These lamps remain lit until the fault is rectified. This applies even if the corresponding message was acknowledged

Acknowledging messages

Warning and error messages can be acknowledged automatically or manually. Manual acknowledgment takes place by pressing the steering wheel buttons, scroll forward/back button (S110s1) and System selection button (S110s3) or the instrument illumination rheostat and reset button (A1r1). If the cause of a message which can be acknowledged automatically is discontinued, the warning is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13) for the duration if its minimum display time.

For faults, which are in addition displayed via an indicator lamp, the lamp is activated simultaneously with the message on the multifunction display (A1p13). The lamp remains actuated for as long as the fault exists, irrespective of whether the fault message on the multifunction display (A1p13) has already been acknowledged.

Acknowledgment of messages (as of 1.6.05)

The windshield washer fluid level is displayed as of the circuit status

"Circuit 15C ON" displayed and is acknowledged automatically after 5 s. Acknowledgment by pressing the steering wheel buttons, scroll forward/back button (S110s1) and system selection button (S110s3) or instrument illumination rheostat and reset button (A1r1) continues to be possible.

Reminder of acknowledged messages

If messages have been acknowledged while driving, when "Circuit 15R is ON" these are displayed once again as a reminder.

In the process current messages, e.g. lights on warning, hide this reminder function. If there are no messages, the main screen appears after "Terminal 15R ON".

Display stored error messages

When the instrument cluster (A1) is active, you can scroll though the saved messages

  1. Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the display "(number of) PROBLEMS" appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) (up to 31.5.05)
  2. Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the display "(number of) MESSAGES" appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) (as of 1.6.05)
  3. Use the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1) to scroll through the fault messages. The messages are displayed according to their priority.

In order to inform the customer about the lower performance of the battery (G1), the message "electrical consumers switched off" appears on the multifunction display if the battery control unit (N82) detects a poor charge level.

Messages presented in white only have information functions. Consumers that do not impair driving safety are shut off until the overall state of the on-board electrical system has stabilized again

Consumer shutoff is apparent, amongst others, by the flashing of the indicator lamp belonging to the switched on heated rear window or heated seats

Acoustic warning function

The acoustic turn signal indicator (A1h2) is integrated within the instrument cluster (A1). It is a type of contactless relay.

The turn signal flasher is always accompanied by an acoustic clicking sound generated in the same rhythm. The acoustic turn signal/flasher (A1h2) function varies according to the type of signal.

Turn signals

The trigger signal for the acoustic turn signal function (A1h2) arrives through the interior compartment CAN after originating at the steering column module (N80). If one of the turn signals fails, the acoustic turn signal indicator (A1h2) operates at twice the usual frequency. The instrument cluster (A1) receives the turn signal lamp fault information from the control unit that triggers the faulty turn signal lamp via the interior compartment CAN.

Hazard warning flashers

The trigger signal for the acoustic turn signal indicator (A1h2) function arrives via the interior compartment CAN after originating in the control unit for the upper user-control panel (N72/1).

ELECTRONIC ALARM SYSTEM flashers

The signal to activate the acoustic turn signal indicator (A1h2) comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module, driver (N10/1) via the interior compartment CAN.

Warning signal

The instrument cluster (A1) has the warning buzzer (A1h1) which for various faults and operating conditions sounds for approx. 0.2 seconds at a frequency of approx. 2048 Hz.

An acoustic warning is given

  1. with malfunction and warning messages with medium and top priority (in addition to the message that appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
  2. when the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up. This indicator lamp is not provided in all national markets. The signal to actuate comes from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) via the interior compartment CAN.
  3. The brake fluid level and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) light up if the vehicle starts to move before the parking brake is released. The signal to activate this lamp comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module, driver (N10/1) via the interior compartment CAN.
  4. When the DTR warning lamp (A1e59) lights up. This lamp is triggered when the distance to the preceding vehicle falls below the defined safety margin. The trigger signal is transmitted through the engine compartment CAN after originating with the DTR control unit (N63/1).
  5. When the transmitter key (A8/1) is in the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) with "circuit 15c" and the driver door is opened. The CAN messages "ignition key status information" and "ignition OFF" are present (over the interior compartment CAN from the EIS control unit (N73)) and the door contact signal from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) is transmitted.
  6. When the standing lamps are on, the ignition key (A8/1) is withdrawn and the driver door is open (lights warning).

The "ignition key status information" comes over the interior compartment CAN from the EIS control unit (N73) and the door contact signal from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) and the standing lamps signal from the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) are present.

  1. When vehicle speed exceeds 120 kph (Gulf states only). The warning tone is muted as soon as the speed drops below 117 km/h.

When the speed set on the variable speed limiter is exceeded, e.g. due to inertial acceleration.

The displayed speed is used. The specified maximum speed comes from the CDI control unit (N3/9) or the ME control unit (N3/10) via the engine compartment CAN.

Scheme 73: Identifying Display Fuel Quantity - Communication Diagram

Function

The fuel level and reserve gage (A1p2) is a 39-segment LCD bar graph indicator. The fuel level and reserve gage (A1p2) is switched on and off by the instrument cluster (A1).

The display readings are shown immediately after "Terminal 15 ON"; the display run-up is dampened, but the run-down is not. A hysteresis is implemented to prevent segment jittering of readings near the segment limits.

Fuel level gage sensor

The left fuel level sensor (B4/1) and right fuel level sensor (B4/2) measure the fuel level. The instrument cluster (A1) registers this percentage from the interior compartment CAN and uses this information as the basis for controlling the fuel level and low fuel display (A1p2) as well as the low fuel warning lamp (A1e4) as required.

Fuel level display

If the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) is in the "Circuit 15 ON" position, the current tank capacity is displayed in the fuel level and reserve indicator (A1p2).

During refueling when the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) is in position "circuit 15 ON", refueling is only detected (updating of the display) as of a replenishment quantity of at least 9 l. Once "circuit 15 ON" is switched on again the display is updated. There is always a delay before the display is updated. This inhibits fluctuations in the display, e.g. due to cornering.

Reserve range

If the reserve range (approx. 9 l) has been reached, the fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) lights up yellow when the engine is running.

The lamp is triggered with a delay period to prevent the lamp flickering.

The system responds to malfunctions by moving the needle in the fuel level and reserve gage (A1p2) to "0". The fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) does not come on

Data is exchanged between the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) and the instrument cluster (A1) via CAN-C (engine compartment CAN).

CNG (compressed natural gas) tank fill level display

The "CNG tank fill level display" multifunction display can be accessed by pressing the system selection button (S110s3) in the base function.

The "CNG tank fill level display" multifunction display can be selected as soon as "circuit 15R ON" but a real fuel gauge is only displayed with "circuit 15 ON" and the driver can then choose between the gas and petrol operating mode

Scheme 79

Scheme 75: Display Outside Temperature - Communication Diagram

Networking

Function requirements

The outside temperature display located in the right-side multifunction display (A1p13) indicates temperature based on the following information

  1. The outside temperature reading
  2. The vehicle speed signal
  3. The coolant temperature
  4. the engine running time

Displaying outside temperature

The instrument cluster (A1) processes this data and controls the display accordingly. Due to the dependency of the outside temperature indicator in the multifunctional display (A1p13) on vehicle speed, engine running time and coolant temperature when the vehicle is stationary or driving slowly the system prevents too high a temperature being displayed as can be caused by radiated engine heat for example.

The display behaves differently according to the coolant temperature and the engine running time.

Coolant temperature < 60°C

When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated the current measured outside temperature value is always displayed.

Coolant temperature > or = 60°C

As of circuit status "Circuit 15C ON" the temperature value measured last is stored and displayed for a maximum of 60 minutes. When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated the stored temperature value is displayed immediately. If the measured outside temperature falls below the stored value, the current measured temperature is displayed after 8 seconds. If the engine is off, the current outside temperature is displayed after six times the engine running time. In the process the preceding engine running time is taken as a basis, however for a maximum engine running time of 10 minutes.

Example

The preceding engine running time was 5 minutes. The delay period was then 6 times 5 minutes. The current temperature is thus only displayed after 30 minutes. If the engine running time was more than 10 minutes, a maximum of 10 minutes is taken into account when calculating the delay time. The maximum delay is thus 60 minutes.

When driving

When the vehicle is moving, the delay periods depend on the vehicle speed. At speeds above 45 km/h rising outside temperatures are displayed after a delay period of 1.5 minutes. At temperatures are displayed after a delay period of 1.5 minutes. At speeds of 20 km/h to 45 km/h rising outside temperatures are displayed after a delay period of 3 minutes. If the vehicle speed falls below 20 km/h, the display is only changed if the measured value falls.

Range

The display is -40°C up to 85°C or -40°F up to 185°F. The temperature is displayed in increments of 0.5°C or 1°F.

Changing over from degrees Centigrade to degrees Fahrenheit (up to 31.5.05)

The driver can switch between degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit using the "Settings" function in the multifunction display (A1p13). The instrument cluster (A1) also sends a message for the air conditioning on the class B (interior) controller area network bus (CAN-B).

Temperature display (as of 1.6.05)

The outside temperature display can no longer be switched over between degrees centigrade and degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature display is determined via the variant coding in the central gateway control unit (N93).

Data for outside temperature

The outside temperature indicator temperature sensor (B14) changes its resistance according to the outside temperature. The sensor is a resistor which reduces its resistance as temperature increases. The resistance value of the outside temperature display temperature sensor (B14) is read in by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) The driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) converts the resistance value from the outside temperature indicator temperature sensor (B14) into a temperature value. This temperature value is placed on the CAN B by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Vehicle speed signal

The following signals are read in by the SBC control unit (A7/3n1)

  1. Left front rpm sensor (L6/1)
  2. Right front rpm sensor (L6/2)
  3. Left rear rpm sensor (L6/3)
  4. Right rear rpm sensor (L6/4)

The SBC control unit (A7/3n1) places the 4 wheel speed signals on the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CANC) via the ESP control unit (N47-5). The instrument cluster (A1) uses these signals to calculate the speed.

Coolant temperature

The coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) changes its resistance according to the coolant temperature. (The sensor is an NTC resistor, i.e. its resistance decreases as the temperature rises.)

The resistance of the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) is read by the CDI control unit (N3/9) or the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10). The ME control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9) converts the resistance values from the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) into a temperature value. This temperature value is placed on the CAN C by the CDI control unit (N3/9) or ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10).

Engine running time

The engine running time is calculated internally in the instrument cluster (A1) using the integral timer. The instrument cluster (A1) processes this data and controls the display accordingly.

Notes on diagnosis

If the display shows the lower temperature value -40°C or -40°F with a temperature value which is evidently higher, there may be a sensor fracture or cable open circuit. If the display indicates the maximum temperature value 85°C or 185°F although the actual outside temperature is obviously lower, this could indicate a short circuit in the sensor or in the line.

If the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) is defective and a valid coolant temperature is not passed on from the CAN-C, processing moves to the range for coolant temperature 60°C

Scheme 80: Display Coolant Temperature - Communication Diagram

Function overview

The coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) is an NTC resistor which reduces its resistance value as temperature increases.

The resistance of the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4) is read via the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) or the CDI control unit (N3/9) and is relayed onto the engine compartment CAN as a CAN message.

The instrument cluster (A1) reads in this temperature from the engine compartment CAN and controls the engine coolant temperature gage (A1p1) accordingly. If necessary, a warning message also appears on the multifunction display (A1p13).

Displaying coolant temperature

The status display for the engine coolant is located on the right-hand side of the instrument cluster (A1).

The display is a segment display.

After the instrument cluster (A1) has been woken, one segment is actuated at temperatures < 40°C; at higher temperatures the segments are actuated according to the values measured by the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4). The display is held at 95°C for input values from 95°C to 115°C.

The system responds to a defective radiator fan by leaving the characteristic curve and reverting to a display that also shows temperatures between 96°C and 116°C

Scheme 81: Display Engine Speed - Communication Diagram

Networking

The engine speed is registered by the crankshaft position sensor (L5).

The signals from the crankshaft position sensor (L5) are picked up by the ME control unit (N3/10) or the CDI control unit (N3/9) and are transmitted to the engine compartment CAN as a CAN message (in rpm).

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the CAN message and actuates the stepper motor of the tachometer (A1p5) relative to the engine speed.

Warning range

The warning range (marked in red on the scale) is below the end value of the scale. The end value of the scale is 7000 rpm for vehicles with gasoline engine and 5000 rpm for vehicles with diesel engine.

Adjustment for the number of cylinders

It is not necessary to adjust the tachometer (A1p5) to the number of cylinders in the engine.

If implausible CAN messages occur, the needle of the tachometer (A1p5) is moved to the left-hand end of the scale. An error bit is also stored in the fault memory

Measuring mileage

The computer of the instrument cluster (A1) evaluates the following wheel speeds for the calculation of distance and speed

  1. Left front rpm sensor (L6/1)
  2. Right front rpm sensor (L6/2)
  3. Left rear rpm sensor (L6/3)
  4. Right rear rpm sensor (L6/4)

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the wheel speeds in rpm by way of the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) from the ESP control unit (N47-5). The system also includes tire size in its calculations of speed and distance.

Tire size is coded using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

Displaying the total mileage

The 6-digit display appears in kilometers or miles in the start screen below the multifunction display (A1p13) as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) is activated. The range for the main odometer is from 0 to 999,999 kilometers or miles. If the maximum mileage is reached, the counter is not reset to 0. In this case the instrument cluster (A1) should be replaced. However, the internal counter continues to operate up to a maximum of 1,677,721 km or 1.000.000 miles. Processing always takes place in kilometers, the display in miles is converted.

Saving mileage counts

The total mileage figure remains stored for at least 5 years, even if the voltage supply is disconnected. Functional integrity is guaranteed under normal conditions over the full service life of the vehicle (15 years or 10,000 operating hours).

Displaying the trip mileage

The trip mileage is displayed as a 5-figure number on the main screen of the multifunction display (A1p13) in kilometers or miles as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) is activated. The range for the trip mileage odometer is from 0 to 9999.9 kilometers or miles. The display is reset to 0 once the maximum mileage is reached.

Reset the trip odometer

The trip odometer is reset to 0 by pressing the instrument illumination brightness control and reset button (A1r1) for more than t = 2 s.

Function requirements

  1. The instrument cluster (A1) is activated
  2. The basic display (total mileage and trip odometer) is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13).

Kilometer/miles changeover (up to 31.5.05)

The driver can switch the display from kilometers to miles using the "Settings" function.

Kilometer/miles changeover (as of 1.6.05)

The display of travel distances can no longer be changed over from kilometers to miles units via the "Settings" function via the "Settings" function. The kilometers/miles display is determined via the variant coding in the central gateway control unit (N93).

If implausible Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) messages are received for all wheel speed signals, the total and trip mileage displays are "frozen" and an error bit is set. The instrument cluster (A1) also passes the current reading of the main odometer on the class B (interior) controller area network bus (CAN-B)

Storage of data

If the battery (G1) is removed, the total mileage is stored for at least 10 years. The trip mileage is also protected against data loss if the battery (G1) is removed for a short period of time.

Transmission mode display

The current transmission mode Winter "W" or Summer "S" (up to modification year 2003) and Comfort "C" or Sport "S" (as of modification year 2003) is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) by the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (up to modification year 2003).

On vehicles with model 211.067 and 211.267 the manual "M" transmission mode is also displayed.

The multifunction display (A1p13), gear indicator (A1p12) and transmission mode display (A1p16) appear after "circuit 15 ON".

In addition to displaying the drive position, the automated manual transmission control unit (N15/6) can also trigger warning messages in the multifunctions display (A1p13). If a detected fault causes the system to enter limp-home mode, "F" is shown in the transmission mode display (A1p16).

The required data are transmitted via the engine compartment CAN from the central gateway control unit (N93).

The display is hidden in the case of incorrect CAN signals

Scheme 78: Display Time - Communication Diagram

The components indicated by broken lines are only relevant for vehicles with COMAND operating and display system (code 352) and navigation module for COMAND (code 527)

General information

Time measurement (clock) requires a periodic process with a cycle duration of high accuracy (e.g. earth rotation, pendulum oscillations).

Likewise, an electronic clock requires an electric clock signal with high frequency accuracy. This clock signal is derived from the very constant, mechanical oscillations of a quartz crystal. These oscillations/frequency is then scaled down to the required frequency of 1 Hz using an electronic frequency divider with control electronics (2).

In this way, the liquid crystal display (LCD) (3) receives one electrical pulse every second to change the display.

Displaying time on vehicles without COMAND

The electronic clock (A1p6) works according to the aforementioned principle.

The clock is adjusted via the "Settings" menu using the keys on the multifunction steering wheel

  1. Scroll forward/back button (S110s1)
  2. System select button (S110s3)
  3. Pushbutton + and -, specific function setting and volume control (S111s1)

The signals from these buttons are read in by the steering column module (N80) and passed on to the instrument cluster (A1) via the interior CAN.

The instrument cluster (A1) also outputs the current time as a message over the interior CAN

Displaying time via COMAND operating and display system (Code 352) with navigation module for COMAND (code 527)

In vehicles with this equipment, the instrument cluster (A1) adopts the time from the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The menus for adjusting the time are therefore unnecessary. The time information is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) over the interior compartment CAN as a message.

If the equipment code for COMAND is set in the instrument cluster (A1), it uses this time information.

If the GPS antenna (A2/49) is receiving GPS signals, these can be used to switch between summer and winter time automatically.

If it fails to receive time information from COMAND, the instrument cluster (A1) accesses its own internal clock (timer). The is no provision for manual adjustment of this internal timekeeper

The electronic speedometer (A1p8) with its speedometer segment ring indicates the vehicle speed.

Speedometer arc

This is located in the second, passive level of the central display, which contains special areas that are activated to display the segments. The display of the speedometer segment ring comprises 52 segments in the ECE variants, 64 segments in the USA/UK variants which are visible on the inner edge of the speedometer scale.

On vehicles with model designation 211.067 and 211.267, the ECE variants and USA/UK variants each have 64 segments which are visible around the inner edge of the speedometer scale

Measuring the vehicle speed

The speed is the distance traveled in kilometers or miles per hour. To calculate the vehicle speed, the processor in the instrument cluster (A1) evaluates the following wheel speeds

  1. Left front rpm sensor (L6/1)
  2. Right front rpm sensor (L6/2)
  3. Left rear rpm sensor (L6/3)
  4. Right rear rpm sensor (L6/4)

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the wheel speeds in rpm from the ESP control unit (N47-5) via the engine compartment CAN.

Speed limit (winter tires)

The speedometer segment ring is not displayed if a speed limit (from 160 km/h to 210 km/h in steps of 10 km/h or from 100 mph to 150 mph in steps of 10 mph) is activated via the 2nd operating level of the instrument cluster (A1).

Evaluating the wheel speed signals

Since not all of the wheels rotate at the same speed (when cornering), all four wheel speeds must be evaluated. The actual process is relatively complex, which is why only a general description is provided here

The individual wheel speeds are compared and submitted to a plausibility check. If there are no significant differences, the vehicle speed is determined using the rotational speed of the left front wheel.

If the individual wheel speed signals differ considerably, the speed signals may be faulty or the vehicle may be cornering.

  1. If the processor's (lateral) comparisons of wheel speed indicate that the vehicle is cornering the speed is calculated from the average for both front wheels.
  2. If the comparisons indicate one or more incorrect wheel speeds, the speed is calculated from the highest wheel speed. This also applies if an error message is received instead of a rotational wheel speed. In this case, an appropriate error bit is stored in the memory.

Digital speedometer

The vehicle speed is displayed digitally. The default value for the display unit (km/h or miles/hr) is stored as a country-specific unit in non-volatile memory and can be changed via "Settings" in the Configurations/Settings menu item.

The digital speed display is matched to the speedometer display by a performance map. This ensures that the value of the analog needle position and the reading shown on the display are synchronized.

No speed display appears if error messages are received for all four wheel speeds. As the distance readings are also based on monitored speed, the odometer will cease to operate

Depending on the national version, the electronic speedometer (A1p8) has a scale in kilometers per hour or a scale in miles per hour

On vehicles with model designation 211.067 and 211.267, the scale of the electronic speedometer (A1p8) goes up to 320 km/h or 160 mph

The tire size is taken into account when calculating the speed. Coding is performed using the Star Diagnosis tool

Battery Charge/Alternator Monitoring - Communication Diagram. Scheme 84

Scheme 84: Battery Charge/Alternator Monitoring - Communication Diagram

Battery charge indicator lamp and alternator indicator lamp

In the event of a fault in the power generator the battery symbol and message "Locate workshop" (this message belongs to category 2) or "Stop - battery/alternator" (this message belongs to category 1) are displayed in the multifunction display in the instrument cluster.

The message appears if the alternator is not working correctly (circuit 61), but the engine speed is higher than 200 rpm. There is no message when the engine is OFF.

Networking

The following Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN Bus) CAN messages are required

  1. Circuit 61 alternator monitor
  2. Signal "circuit 61 (D+)" from alternator

The alternator indicator lamp "circuit 61" is read in by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module.

The driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module then places the message "circuit 61 HIGH" (voltage circuit 61 > 9 V) or "circuit 61 LOW" (alternator not working correctly) on the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN B).

Engine speed

The pulses from the crankshaft Hall sensor are read in by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit or by the CDI control unit (N3/9). The respective control unit places the message motor speed (in rpm) on the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C). The instrument cluster receives these messages and evaluates them.

Alternator check, circuit 61 (D+)

The CAN message "term. 61" can have the status "high" and "low". The respective status depends on the actual voltage at the input of the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module. The status is "HIGH" if the voltage is greater then 9 V. It is "LOW" when the voltage drops back below 4.5 V.

Excitation current for the alternator

Once circuit 15 is switched on the battery current flows via the alternator preresistance, which is located in the wiring harness, through the excitation winding in the rotor and via the regulator to circuit 31.

The preexcitation is introduced in the process. At low engine speeds self-excitation is nonfunctional, so pre-excitation takes place. If, when the engine is running, the alternator voltage rises above the battery voltage, the excitation winding is supplied by the alternator itself. The voltage at tml. 61 increases to the same voltage as the alternator voltage. If the alternator voltage drops below the battery voltage, this is detected by the driver-side SAM control unit with fuse and relay module and relayed as a CAN message to the instrument cluster, which outputs an appropriate message via the multifunction display.

Function survey

The trip computer is integrated in the instrument cluster (A1).

The instrument cluster (A1) is linked with

  1. the engine compartment CAN and
  2. the interior compartment CAN

Data is exchanged with virtually all the control units over the two bus systems.

However, the instrument cluster (A1) does not act as an interface between the two data bus systems. This function is reserved for the central gateway control unit (N93)

This document lists the principal CAN messages for the functions of the instrument cluster (A1) including the trip computer.

The connections of the instrument cluster (A1) are described in the last part of this document.

The trip computer receives the following input signals

  1. The wheel speeds over the engine compartment CAN from the ESP, SPS and BAS control module (N47-5)
  2. The consumption signal from the motor electronics control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN
  3. The time over the interior compartment CAN from the audio gateway control module (N93/1), and this over MOST from the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) in vehicles with COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3)
  4. The states "Terminal 15" and "Key in ignition" over the interior compartment CAN from the EIS control module (N73)
  5. The actuation signals from the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel over the interior compartment CAN from the steering column module (N80)
  6. The fuel tank level over the interior compartment CAN from the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2)

CAN messages from the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel

Since the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel each have several functions, the signals from these buttons must be processed accordingly

  1. All the buttons in the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) are voltage-coded and are read by the steering column module (N80).
  2. The steering column module (N80) relays the relevant messages onto the interior compartment CAN.
  3. These CAN messages are received by the instrument cluster (A1).
  4. The instrument cluster (A1) interprets these messages in combination with the systems displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) and passes on these interpreted messages again on the interior CAN.

Received messages for the multifunction display

All signals for the messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) are received over the engine compartment CAN or interior CAN. The signal paths and further details on various messages can be read in the function descriptions of the systems in question.

MODEL 211.0/ 2

No particular changeover of dimensional units is to be performed for the trip computer as it takes over the settings and codings of the instrument cluster (A1).

The dimensional units (miles/kilometers) are changed over in the instrument cluster (A1) via the selection "Settings" in the submenu "instrument cluster" in the multifunction display (A1p13) using the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

The only requirement is to preset the unit of measurement used to monitor the distance (kilometers or miles). The other units that are relevant for the trip computer are then converted automatically.

The display screen "since start" of " since reset" for the journey time can be activated the via the system selection button (S110s3) and scroll forwards and backwards button (S110s1) of the multifunction steering wheel.

As the time is only counted with "terminal 15 ON", the instrument cluster (A1) requires information about the status of terminal 15. This information is relayed by the EIS control module (N73) onto the interior compartment CAN and is read by the instrument cluster (A1). The time is calculated internally in the instrument cluster (A1)

If the display of travel time or travel distance exceeds the maximum display value (99:59 hours or 40959 miles (65535 km)), then the travel time and travel distance of the respective memory are reset automatically. This preserves the relationship between travel time and mileage

The range can be called up on the multifunction steering wheel using the system selection button (S110s3) in the first function of the multifunction display (A1p13). The scrolling forwards and backwards button (S110s1) indicates the range.

To calculate the range the trip computer in the instrument cluster (A1) requires the fuel level in the fuel tank.

The fuel level sensor for the left half of the tank (B4/1) and the fuel level sensor for the right half of the tank (B4/2) are polled by the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2) and the appropriate message is relayed onto the interior compartment CAN. The instrument cluster (A1) receives this message, evaluates it and displays the corresponding value as the tank content.

As the time is counted only when terminal 15 is ON, the instrument cluster (A1) requires the information regarding the status of terminal 15. This information is relayed by the EIS control module (N73) onto the interior compartment CAN and is read by the instrument cluster (A1). The time is calculated internally in the instrument cluster (A1)

If the displayed travel time or mileage exceeds the maximum display value (99:59 hours or 40959 miles (65535 km)), the travel time and the mileage are automatically reset in the relevant memory. This preserves the relationship between travel time and mileage

Depending on the adjustment (miles/kilometers) and coding of the national version of the instrument cluster (A1) the display takes place in

  1. Miles per gallon
  2. Liters per 100 kilometers or
  3. Kilometers per liter (only if national version Japan is coded)

The trip computer calculates the average fuel consumption figures from the mileage traveled and the consumption signal.

The fuel consumption signal uses information on the amount of fuel injected within a specific period

The instrument cluster (A1) receives this data in the following way

  1. The consumption signal is produced by the motor electronics control unit (N3/10) and by the CDI control unit (N3/9) and is placed as a message on the engine compartment CAN.
  2. The mileage traveled is calculated from the four wheel speeds. The signals come over the engine compartment CAN from the ESP, SPS and BAS control module (N47-5).

After a reset it may take as much as three kilometers/miles or up to two minutes until enough data is available to calculate and display the fuel consumption figures correctly. During this time depending on the adjustment (miles/kilometers) and coding of the national version of the instrument cluster (A1)5.8 MPG, 40 L/100 km or 2.5 km/L is displayed

It is normal for different values to be displayed in the "since start" (short-distance memory) display screen and in the "since reset" (long-distance memory) display screen as both displays access different data records.

The "Since start" display (short-distance memory) reacts much more sensitively to the current driving situation than the "Since reset" display (long-distance memory).

Parktronic system (PTS), function - GF54.65-P-0001T

MODEL 211.0 /2 with CODE (220a) Parktronic System (PTS)

Shown on model 211.0

Overall description

The Parktronic system (PTS) is an electronic parking assist. It assists the driver in estimating the distances to obstacles in front of and behind the vehicle, particularly in blind spots.

When the vehicle is moving forwards the Parktronic system (PTS) only monitors the front of the vehicle.

When the vehicle is moving backwards the Parktronic system (PTS) monitors the back and front of the vehicle. Requirement

  1. manual transmission or Sequentronic only when reverse gear is engaged.
  2. Automatic transmission or Tiptronic selector lever "N" or "R".

Function conditions

  1. Terminal 15 ON
  2. Parking brake not operated
  3. Selector lever (automatic) in drive mode D, N or R
  4. Vehicle speed < or = 16 km/h

Function

The distance between the vehicle and obstacle is detected via the front bumper PTS sensor unit (A42) and rear bumper PTS sensor (A43) and passed on to the Parktronic control unit (N62).

The Parktronic control unit (N62) evaluates the signals and activates the center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) or the Rear PTS warning indicator (A44/3).

One side of the warning indicator is assigned to each side of the bumper. The warning indicators warn the driver by means of both acoustic and visual signals.

The Parktronic system (PTS) is activated by switching on the ignition, a system self-test is carried out first.

Deactivation

  1. The system can be switched off or on manually via the PTS OFF switch (N72s13) in the lower control panel control unit (N72). Feedback is effected via an LED in the PTS OFF switch (N72s13).
  2. Speed-dependent cutout (v > or = 18 km/h).
  3. Cutout of rear components with trailer recognition (with code (550) trailer hitch).

Function

On all models, except model 163 the function readiness of the Parktronic system (PTS) is signaled by the bright frame of the LCD warning indicator.

In model 163 this is indicated by the first yellow segment of the LED warning display lighting up at half brightness (approximately 50% of maximum possible brightness).

When an obstacle is approached, one or more segments of the warning indicator light up depending on the distance.

An intermittent warning tone sounds when the first red segment lights up. At the second red segment the intermittent tone becomes a continuous signal.

The warning tones from the front and rear warning displays are different.

The brightness of the warning indicators (background illumination) changes if

  1. on vehicles without automatic light switch daylight sensor the lighting is switched on with the exterior lamp switch.
  2. on vehicles with automatic light switch daylight sensor the ambient conditions such as darkness, twilight or passing through a tunnel are recognized.

In both cases the brightness is reduced to 30% of maximum brightness.

In countries with daylight driving lamp circuit, the brightness does not change, but remains constant at 60% of the maximum possible brightness.

In models 140, 168, 202, 208, 210, 211 the function of the daytime running lamps can be activated via the corresponding diagnosis tool (STAR-DIAGNOSIS).

Warning display, function - GF54.65-P-4104-01T

The visual warnings takes place via LED displays. A display page consists of 6 yellow and 2 red LEDs.

This functional readiness is signaled by the first yellow LED with reduced current (half-bright).

If the vehicle rolls towards an obstacle and thus into the monitoring range, the first yellow LED lights up with full brightness. The nearer the vehicle gets to an obstacle, the more yellow LEDs are actuated. If the distance to the obstacle reduces to 30 cm, the first red LED lights up and when the minimum distance of 20 cm is reached the second red LED lights up.

When the first red segment (3) lights up in addition an intermittent signal sounds. When the second red segment (3) lights up the intermittent signal becomes a continuous signal.

The warning tones of the center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) and rear PTS warning indicator (A44/3) have a different frequency in order to guarantee a better differentiation.

The brightness of the LEDs depends on the conditions of the surroundings, for example, darkness, twilight or driving through a tunnel.

The brightness is reduced to 30% of the maximum brightness.

In the event of a malfunction (signal interruption, sensor failure) all the red LEDs are actuated.

If the malfunction also occurs while driving, it is stored as a system fault and displayed until the next activation. After a further 20 seconds the center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) or rear PTS warning indicator (A44/3) switches off, a continuous tone sounds for 3 seconds.
