Freeze Frame Data
The IFI control module stores faults and ambient conditions at the moment the fault occurs. Freeze frame data is stored which was present when fault first occurred. Freeze frame data may be displayed on several screens. The following conditions may be identified with fault
- Voltage Too Low
- Voltage Too High
- Signal Too Small
- Signal Too Large
- Implausible Value
Limp Mode
The IFI control module will substitute missing input signals based on other signals available to maintain system operation. Substitute values may result in engine performance reduction, reduction in maximum engine RPM, switching off anti-vibration control, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system malfunction, cruise control malfunction or boost control malfunction.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
The IFI control module is equipped with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. During vehicle operation, signal plausibility is checked on all input and output connections. If a malfunction occurs for an extended period of time (5 seconds), a DTC is stored in memory of IFI control module. If a malfunction occurs in boost pressure, EGR system, etc., malfunction is stored after 5-10 seconds. DTC memory remains active if ignition is turned off or vehicle's battery is disconnected. If an emissions related malfunction occurs, the CHECK ENGINE light may illuminate and/or the multifunction indicator may display CHECK ENGINE/ENGINE ELECTRONICS.
VERSION CODING
Note. Hand Held Tester (HHT) is necessary for performing version coding.
The In-Line Fuel Injection (IFI) control module has a version coding feature. Coding must be performed when a new IFI control module is installed. Version coding can be performed automatically or manually using Hand Held Tester (HHT).
Automatic Coding
Before removing IFI control module, using HHT, read and store existing version code. After installation of new module, download previous version code using HHT.
Manual Coding
If version code number cannot be read, vehicle equipment and version must be determined. A corresponding code number must be obtained from Spare Parts Microfiche and manually entered with HHT. The following version data must be obtained for coding
- Vehicle model.
- 5-speed automatic transmission with cruise control.
DAS is activated from DAS control module through the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus to the In-Line Fuel Injection (IFI) control module. When DAS is activated, IFI control module renders fuel injection system inoperative. See DAS VERSION table to identify model/version usage.

DAS VERSION
DAS 2 activation or deactivation is accomplished with Remote Central Locking (RCL) module. System can only be activated or deactivated with Infrared (IR) transmitter or master key.
DAS 3 activation or deactivation is accomplished with Electronic Ignition (EI) lock control module when using electronic key. When electronic key is inserted into the ignition lock, DAS 3 control module is activated. Locking or unlocking vehicle using mechanical key has no effect on DAS.
On DAS systems, the IFI control module and RCL module or EI lock control module are "married" to one another with identification codes. Identification codes cannot be erased. Switching IFI, RCL or EI modules form one vehicle to another is not possible. If an exchange IFI control module is installed for test purposes, up to 40 start attempts can be performed before IFI control module and RCL or EI control modules "marry" to one another. Prior to performing first engine start, IFI control module must be version coded to vehicle using scan tool. See VERSION CODING .
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
- Turn ignition off before connecting or disconnecting In-Line Fuel Injection (IFI) control module connectors.
- If Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is shorted or open, IFI control module will use a substitute value which is very close to actual value. Therefore a failure is not easily recognizable. A failure should only be identified using a scan tool.
RETRIEVING CODES
Note. Diagnostic information is read using a generic scan tool or Hand-Held Tester (HHT) (965 589 00 01 00) and Multiplexer Cable (965 589 00 40 00). HHT and multiplexer cable are preferred. Generic scan tool may not be able to perform all test functions.
Using Hand Held Tester (HHT)
Turn ignition off. Connect HHT to 38-pin diagnostic connector located in right rear of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Follow manufacturer's instructions for reading fault codes. If no fault codes are present, but vehicle is experiencing a problem, go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTICS .
CLEARING CODES
Disconnecting vehicle battery will not erase codes. Following scan tool equipment manufacturers instructions, erase fault codes.
