FREEZE FRAME DATA

The IFI control module stores faults and ambient conditions at the moment the fault occurs. Freeze frame data is stored which was present when fault first occurred. Freeze frame data may be displayed on several screens. The following conditions may be identified with fault

  1. Voltage Too Low
  2. Voltage Too High
  3. Signal Too Small
  4. Signal Too Large
  5. Implausible Value

MISSING SIGNAL SUBSTITUTION

The IFI control module will substitute missing input signals based on other signals available to maintain system operation. Substitute values may result in intake Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) malfunction, EGR system malfunction, switching off anti-vibration control, cruise control malfunction, engine performance reduction, and reduction of maximum engine RPM.

DRIVE AUTHORIZATION SYSTEM

Activation of Drive Authorization System (DAS) takes place only from Remote Control Locking (RCL) control module through Controller Area Network (CAN) to Inline Fuel Injection (IFI) control module. After activation of DAS, IFI control module makes fuel injection system inoperable. The DAS can only be activated using the Infrared Remote (IR) transmitter or master key.

The RCL control module and IFI control module are permanently matched to each other using an identification code. This identification code cannot be erased. Troubleshooting of an IFI control module or RCL control module by swapping modules from another vehicle cannot be performed.

If a new IFI control module is installed for testing purposes, a maximum of 40 engine starts can be performed before control modules are permanently matched (locked) to each other. After 40 engine starts, IFI control module is permanently assigned to vehicle and cannot be used in another vehicle.

Before first engine start, version coding must be performed on IFI control module using Hand Held Tester (HHT). After performing version coding, identification must be initiated. See VERSION CODING .

VERSION CODING

Note. Hand Held Tester (HHT) is necessary for performing version coding.

Version coding can be performed automatically or manually using Hand Held Tester (HHT).

Automatic Coding

Before removing IFI control module, using HHT, read existing version code. After installation of new IFI control module, enter previously read version code.

Manual Coding

If code number cannot be read, vehicle equipment and version must be determined. A corresponding code number must be obtained from Spare Parts Microfiche and manually entered with HHT. The following version data must be obtained for coding

  1. Vehicle Model
  2. ABS
  3. Manual Transmission
  4. 4-Speed Automatic Transmission
  5. With Cruise Control
  6. Without Cruise Control
  7. ETS
  8. Country Version

When returning a new control module, code number must be erased.

Using Hand Held Tester (HHT)

Turn ignition off. Connect HHT to 38-pin diagnostic connector located in engine compartment. (Scheme 28) Turn ignition on. Follow manufacturer's instructions for reading fault codes.

FAULT CODE DEFINITION

After identifying malfunctioning component or system, see appropriate FAULT CODE DIAGNOSIS charts under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .

Loose connections are stored if they occur several times over a certain time period. Fault codes caused by loose connections appear as stored fault codes and never as current fault codes.

Note. Generic scan tool will not identify all possible fault codes. It is recommended to use Hand Held Tester (HHT) for diagnosis.

Note. If no fault codes are displayed, there is no malfunction.

COMPONENT IDENTIFICATION

PREGLOW SYSTEM

The preglow time-limit relay module has a short circuit protection feature. If a short occurs in glow plug wiring or glow plugs, current is interrupted. The preglow time-limit relay module is operational again if short is eliminated or glow/starter switch is turned to position "O". A malfunctioning glow plug will be identified by an illuminated preglow indicator light. For symptom diagnostic information relating to preglow system (Scheme 29)
