SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

The Inline Fuel Injection (IFI) control module is equipped with a self-diagnostic capability for trouble shooting. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory remains active if ignition is turned off or battery is disconnected. The CHECK ENGINE Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will illuminate to indicate severe faults.

Using Generic Scan Tool

Turn ignition off. Connect generic scan tool to diagnostic connector located under left side of dashboard. (Scheme 1) Turn ignition on. Follow tool manufacturer's instructions for reading fault codes.

FAULT CODE DIAGNOSIS EQUIPMENT CONNECTION

Turn ignition off. Disconnect Inline Fuel Injection (IFI) control unit connector. Install Test Cable (104 589 00 63 00) between IFI control unit and IFI control unit connector. Connect Test Cable (104 589 00 63 00) to Socket Box (129 589 00 21 00). (Scheme 2) Connect DVOM as instructed in diagnostic information.

UNDERSTANDING DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION

Note. IFI control unit is referred to as N37 by the manufacturer. When diagnosing IFI, test connections are made at IFI control unit (N37) using Socket Box (129 589 00 21 00).

For reading and understanding fault code diagnosis, as an example, using DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, read fault code P1615. Start at step 1.0. Under TEST SCOPE column, component being tested is IFI control module (N3/7), voltage supply. Under TEST CONNECTION column, using DVOM, measure resistance between socket box terminals No. 19 and 37. Under TEST CONDITION column, make measurement with ignition on. Voltage is 11-14 volts under NOMINAL VALUE column. If voltage is within specification, go to next step (1.1). If voltage is not within specification, follow instructions under POSSIBLE CAUSE/REMEDY column. Replace relay module (K40) or repair faulty wiring.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Fault codes are not in numerical order. First code number listed is for Hand Held Tester (HHT). Second code number listed is for generic scan tool. Not all codes have a corresponding generic scan tool code number. Some fault codes are identified with the same fault code number when using a generic scan tool.
