Power Mirror/steering Column Adjustment Systems - E-Class: Adjustments Mercedes-Benz E-class W210/S210

MIRROR & STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT INOPERATIVE

If mirror and steering column are both inoperative, check power to combination control module. Perform TEST 2 COMBINATION CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS. If power supply to combination control module is okay, check wiring. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If wiring is okay, replace combination control module.

STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT INOPERATIVE

If steering column adjustment is inoperative, check the following as possible cause as possible cause and repair as necessary

  1. Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) .
  2. Perform «TEST 17»(ref-96596-S24422814322001041900000) STEERING COLUMN SWITCH RESISTANCE OUTPUT under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Perform «TEST 18»(ref-96596-S08517569132001041900000) STEERING COLUMN TELESCOPIC MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Perform «TEST 19»(ref-96596-S38444910492001041900000) STEERING COLUMN TILT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. Check CAN data line. Perform TEST 21 through TEST 25 under SYSTEM TESTS in POWER SEATS article.
  6. Replace combination control module.
  7. Replace steering column adjustment motor.
  8. Replace steering column adjustment switch.

DRIVER'S MIRROR ADJUSTMENT

Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Adjust driver's side mirror in all directions. If mirror does not adjust in all directions, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary

  1. Perform «TEST 1»(ref-96596-S18927602982001041900000) MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Perform «TEST 2»(ref-96596-S23613089402001041900000) COMBINATION CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Perform «TEST 3»(ref-96596-S08037462132001041900000) DRIVER'S SIDE ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE OUTPUT under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Perform «TEST 10»(ref-96596-S31471142912001041900000) DRIVER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. Perform «TEST 11»(ref-96596-S33973839722001041900000) DRIVER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. Perform «TEST 12»(ref-96596-S04968590042001041900000) DRIVER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST under SYSTEM TESTS.
  7. Perform «TEST 13»(ref-96596-S32010367572001041900000) DRIVER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST under SYSTEM TESTS.

PASSENGER'S MIRROR ADJUSTMENT

Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Adjust passenger's side mirror in all directions. If mirror does not adjust in all directions, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary

  1. Perform «TEST 1»(ref-96596-S18927602982001041900000) MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Perform «TEST 2»(ref-96596-S23613089402001041900000) COMBINATION CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Perform «TEST 4»(ref-96596-S41097284142001041900000) PASSENGER'S SIDE ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE OUTPUT under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Perform «TEST 5»(ref-96596-S14703647272001041900000) PASSENGER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. Perform «TEST 6»(ref-96596-S21517753432001041900000) PASSENGER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. Perform «TEST 7»(ref-96596-S32861661772001041900000) PASSENGER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST under SYSTEM TESTS.
  7. Perform «TEST 8»(ref-96596-S03395038652001041900000) PASSENGER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST under SYSTEM TESTS.

Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Adjust steering column in all directions. If steering column does not adjust in all directions, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary

  1. Perform «TEST 2»(ref-96596-S23613089402001041900000) COMBINATION CONTROL MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Perform «TEST 17»(ref-96596-S24422814322001041900000) STEERING COLUMN SWITCH RESISTANCE OUTPUT under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Perform «TEST 18»(ref-96596-S08517569132001041900000) STEERING COLUMN TELESCOPIC MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Perform «TEST 19»(ref-96596-S38444910492001041900000) STEERING COLUMN TILT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY under SYSTEM TESTS.

TEST 1: MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect mirror adjustment switch harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 at mirror adjustment switch harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) .
  2. Measure voltage between terminals No. 4 and 6 at mirror adjustment switch harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) .
  3. Turn on parking lights. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 at mirror adjustment switch harness connector. If battery voltage exists, voltage supply to mirror adjustment switch is okay at this time. If battery voltage does not exist, repair lighting circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) .

TEST 3: DRIVER'S SIDE ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE OUTPUT

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between terminals No. 69 and 52 at breakout box. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror UP position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror DOWN position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Check voltage supply to mirror adjustment switch. Perform «TEST 1»(ref-96596-S18927602982001041900000) MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE SUPPLY. Replace mirror adjustment switch.
  2. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 69 at breakout box. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror LEFT position, less than one volt should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror RIGHT position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is at rest and mirror selection switch is in left mirror position, 4-7 volts should exist. If voltage is as specified, driver's side voltage output is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace mirror adjustment switch.

TEST 4: PASSENGER'S SIDE ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE OUTPUT

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between terminals No. 68 and 52 at breakout box. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror UP position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror DOWN position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Check voltage supply to mirror adjustment switch. Perform «TEST 1»(ref-96596-S18927602982001041900000) MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH VOLTAGE SUPPLY. Replace mirror adjustment switch.
  2. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 68 at breakout box. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror LEFT position, less than one volt should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror RIGHT position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is at rest and mirror selection switch is in right mirror position, 4-7 volts should exist. If voltage is as specified, passenger's side voltage output is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace mirror adjustment switch.

TEST 5: PASSENGER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Measure voltage between terminals No. 4 and 5 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror LEFT position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror RIGHT position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity.
  2. If voltage is as specified, voltage supply to passenger's side vertical adjustment motor is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Replace mirror adjustment switch. Replace combination control module.

TEST 6: PASSENGER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Measure voltage between terminals No. 3 and 4 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror UP position, battery voltage should exist. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to passenger's side mirror DOWN position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity.
  2. If voltage is as specified, voltage supply to passenger's side horizontal adjustment motor is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Replace mirror adjustment switch. Replace combination control module.

TEST 7: PASSENGER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Disconnect passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a jumper wire, connect pin No. 3 at passenger's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminal No. 1 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1.
  2. Using Fused Jumper Wire (124589 37 63 00), connect terminals No. 1 and 5 at breakout box. Using another jumper wire, briefly connect pin No. 4 at passenger's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminals No. 2 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. If passenger's side vertical adjustment motor runs, passenger's side vertical adjustment motor is okay at this time. If passenger's side vertical adjustment motor does not run, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace passenger's side mirror assembly.

TEST 8: PASSENGER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Disconnect passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a jumper wire, connect pin No. 5 at passenger's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminals No. 1 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1.
  2. Using Fused Jumper Wire (124589 37 63 00), connect terminals No. 1 and 3 at breakout box. Using another jumper wire, briefly connect pin No. 4 at passenger's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminals No. 2 at passenger's side mirror harness connector No. 1. If passenger's side horizontal adjustment motor runs, passenger's side horizontal adjustment motor is okay at this time. If passenger's side horizontal adjustment motor does not run, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace passenger's side mirror assembly.

TEST 10: DRIVER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE

SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Measure voltage between terminals No. 3 and 4 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror UP position, battery voltage should exist.
  2. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror DOWN position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity. If voltage is as specified, voltage supply to driver's side horizontal adjustment motor is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Replace mirror adjustment switch. Replace combination control module.

TEST 11: DRIVER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR VOLTAGE

SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Measure voltage between terminals No. 4 and 5 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror LEFT position, battery voltage should exist.
  2. When mirror adjustment switch is operated to driver's side mirror RIGHT position, battery voltage should exist with opposite polarity. If voltage is as specified, voltage supply to driver's side vertical adjustment motor is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, check the following as possible cause and repair as necessary: Check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . Replace mirror adjustment switch. Replace combination control module.

TEST 12: DRIVER'S SIDE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Disconnect driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a jumper wire, connect pin No. 3 at driver's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminal No. 1 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1.
  2. Using Fused Jumper Wire (124589 37 63 00), connect terminals No. 1 and 5 at breakout box. Using another jumper wire, briefly connect pin No. 4 at driver's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminal No. 2 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. If driver's side vertical adjustment motor runs, driver's side vertical adjustment motor is okay at this time. If driver's side vertical adjustment motor does not run, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace driver's side mirror assembly.

TEST 13: DRIVER'S SIDE HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT MOTOR TEST

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using Harness Adapter (210 589 01 63 00), connect Breakout Box (129 589 00 21 00) to combination control module. Disconnect driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  2. Using a jumper wire, connect pin No. 5 at driver's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminals No. 1 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. Using Fused Jumper Wire (124589 37 63 00), connect terminals No. 1 and 3 at breakout box. Using another jumper wire, briefly connect pin No. 4 at driver's side mirror connector No. 1 to terminals No. 2 at driver's side mirror harness connector No. 1. If driver's side horizontal adjustment motor runs, driver's side horizontal adjustment motor is okay at this time. If driver's side horizontal adjustment motor does not run, check wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96596-S15327701322001041900000) . If wiring is okay, replace driver's side mirror assembly.
