- Using the Driven Gear Oil Seal Installer, install the inner input seal.
- Install the helical gears. Install the drive gear. Use a slight rotation to prevent damaging the inner input seal. Install the idler gear. Install the driven gear. CAUTION: Make sure not to roll the inner input seal sealing lip when installing the drive gear.
- Apply a 3 mm (0.11 in) bead of silicone sealant to the sealing surface of the PTU cover. Install the PTU cover and tighten the 11 PTU cover bolts in a star pattern. Tighten to 32 N.m {3.2 kgf.m, 24 ft.lbf}. CAUTION: The PTU cover and case sealing surfaces must be free of oil before applying new sealant.

- Remove the driveshaft. See «DRIVESHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-348678-S15469676532009112700000) .
- Using the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture to hold the flange, remove the pinion nut. CAUTION: Rotational torque of the power transfer unit (PTU) rear output shaft flange must be measured and recorded using a N.m {kgf.m, in.lbf} torque wrench for correct pinion bearing preload when reassembled.
- Using the Steering Wheel Remover, remove the PTU rear output shaft flange. NOTE: Index-mark the PTU rear output shaft flange relative to the pinion spline.
- Install the PTU rear output shaft flange to engage the spline as previously marked. Install the PTU rear output shaft flange.
- Using the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture, install the pinion nut. CAUTION: Do not overtighten the pinion nut. Refer to the rotational torque previously recorded with a N.m {kgf.m, in.lbf} torque wrench. Overtightening the pinion nut will damage the collapsible spacer. CAUTION: If the rotational torque is less than specification, tighten the drive pinion nut in small increments until it is within specification. Do not tighten the drive pinion nut more than 3 N.m {0.3 kgf.m, 27 in.lbf} at a time or the collapsible spacer will be damaged. If the rotation torque is higher than specification, the collapsible spacer has been compressed too far and a new collapsible spacer must be installed.
- Install the driveshaft. See «DRIVESHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-348678-S15469676532009112700000) .

- Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the PTU vent where indicated. CAUTION: Do not apply silicone sealant to the PTU vent hole as it may cause damage to the PTU internal components.
- Using the special tool, install the PTU vent. NOTE: Drive the PTU vent in until the special tool bottoms out against the PTU rear cover boss.
- Measure the depth of the PTU vent. If the vent is too high, repeat Step 3 .
- Install the PTU vent boot. CAUTION: Make sure the PTU vent boot is correctly aligned or damage to the components may occur. NOTE: Use a soapy water solution to lubricate the PTU breather boot.
- Install the PTU. See «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) - INSTALLATION»(ref-348644-S11385904092009112700000) .
