Starter Motor - Ground Circuit

A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows

Scheme 2

Scheme 2: Starter Motor - Ground Circuit
  1. Connect the 73111 Automotive Meter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
  3. If the voltage is more than 0.5 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery, the body ground connections and the starter ground connections. Retest.
  4. If the voltage is more than 0.5 volt, install a new cable. If the voltage reading is less than 0.5 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-348626-S31954056142009112700000)
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-348661-S24834528062009112700000) .
  3. Remove the 5 bolts, the pin-type retainer (not shown in figure), and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kg. m, 80 in. lb.}.
  4. Remove the starter solenoid wire nut. To install, tighten to 5 N.m {0.5 kg. m, 44 in. lb.}.
  5. Remove the starter solenoid battery cable nut and disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal cover and cables. To install, tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kg. m, 106 in. lb.}.
  6. Remove the ground wire nut and position aside the ground wire. To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kg. m, 18 ft. lb.}.
  7. Remove the 2 stud bolts and the starter motor. To install, tighten to 35 N.m {3.5 kg. m, 26 ft. lb.}.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 5: STARTER MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-348661-S24834528062009112700000) .
  2. Remove the starter motor solenoid wire nut. To install, tighten to 5 N.m {0.5 kg. m, 44 in. lb.}.
  3. Remove the starter motor solenoid battery cable nut and position aside the cables. To install, tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kg. m, 106 in. lb.}.
  4. Remove the ground wire nut and position aside the ground wire. To install, tighten to 18 N.m {1.8 kg. m, 159 in. lb.}.
  5. Remove the 2 stud bolts and the starter motor. To install, tighten to 27 N.m {2.7 kg. m, 20 ft. lb.}.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
