Engine Control System Hybrid: Removal & Installation Mazda Tribute II

Removal

  1. Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. See «PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION (PMI)»(ref-373087-S23208164192010100600000) . NOTE: PCM installation DOES NOT require new keys or programming of keys, only a Parameter Reset of the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS).
  2. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the cowl stud bolt.
  3. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the PCM.
  5. Remove and inspect the PCM cowl seal, install new if damaged.

Installation

  1. Install the PCM cowl seal.
  2. Install the PCM and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
  3. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  4. Attach the wiring harness retainer to the cowl stud bolt. Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
  5. Restore the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration restore steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. See «PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION (PMI)»(ref-373087-S23208164192010100600000) .
  6. Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Parameter Reset procedure. See «KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS»(ref-373087-S20496133182010100600000) .
  7. Using the scan tool, perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure, following the on-screen instructions.

Scheme 35: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
  1. Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. See «PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION (PMI)»(ref-373087-S23208164192010100600000) . NOTE: PCM installation DOES NOT require new keys or programming of keys, only a Parameter Reset of the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS).
  2. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the cowl stud bolt.
  3. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the PCM.
  5. Remove and inspect the PCM cowl seal, install new if damaged.

  2. Install the PCM and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
  3. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.

  6. Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Parameter Reset procedure. See «KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS»(ref-373087-S20496133182010100600000) .

Scheme 36: MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the 2 screws and the MAF sensor. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 37: MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
CAUTIONThe mass air flow (MAF) sensor electronics module and body are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a unit. Do not tamper with the sensing elements located in the air flow bypass of the MAF body.
  1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the 2 screws and the MAF sensor. To install, tighten to 2 N.m {0.2 kgf.m, 18 in.lbf}.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 38: CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor. To install, tighten to 7 N.m {0.7 kgf.m, 62 in.lbf}. Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft position (CMP) sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

  1. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}. Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Lubricate the CMP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Remove the 5 bolts and the RH splash shield.
  3. Remove the engine plug bolt.
  4. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC) and install the special tool.
  5. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the bolts and the CKP sensor.

  1. Install a 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) standard bolt. CAUTION: Only hand tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover may occur.
  2. Install a new CKP sensor and the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time. NOTE: Whenever the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is removed, a new one must be installed using the alignment tool supplied with the new part.
  3. Adjust the CKP sensor with the alignment tool. Tighten to 7 N.m {0.7 kgf.m, 62 in.lbf}. NOTE: The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor alignment tool is supplied with the new sensor and is not available separately.
  4. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the 6 mm (0.23 in) bolt from the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Install the engine plug bolt. Tighten to 20 N.m {2.0 kgf.m, 177 in.lbf}.
  7. Install the RH splash shield and the 5 bolts. Tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.
  8. Using the scan tool, carry out the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure, following the on-screen instructions.

Scheme 47: CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the bolt and the CKP. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}. Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Lubricate the CKP O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-348661-S24834528062009112700000) .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner outlet pipe. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION -- 2.5L»(ref-348655-S38737774142009112700000) .
  3. Disconnect the electrical throttle control electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 4 bolts and the Throttle Body (TB). Discard the TB gasket To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new TB gasket.

  3. Disconnect the electrical throttle control electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 4 bolts and the Throttle Body (TB). Discard the TB gasket To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new TB gasket.

Scheme 50: CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE (CHT) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. Detach the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor cover and position aside.
  2. Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove and discard the CHT sensor. To install, tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kgf.m, 106 in.lbf}.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector. NOTE: If the cylinder head is being replaced, the CHT must be replaced.
  2. Remove the CHT sensor. To install, tighten to 11 N.m {1.1 kgf.m, 97 in.lbf}.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the accelerator pedal electrical connector.
  2. Remove the 3 bolts and the accelerator pedal and sensor assembly. To install, tighten to 7 N.m {0.7 kgf.m, 62 in.lbf} (2.5L and 3.0L vehicles). To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf} (2.5L Hybrid vehicles).
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
  3. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor. To install, tighten to 48 N.m {4.9 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}. NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the sensor threads with penetrating and lock lubricant to assist in removal.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Remove the 7 bolts (5 shown in illustration) and the LH splash shield. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  3. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
  4. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S and the catalyst monitor sensor. To install, tighten to 48 N.m {4.9 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}. NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor with penetrating and lock lubricant to aid in removal.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the HO2S and the catalyst monitor sensor.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION -- 2.5L»(ref-348655-S27678094552009112700000) .
  3. Remove the bolt and the knock sensor (KS). To install, tighten to 20 N.m {2.0 kgf.m, 177 in.lbf}.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Cylinder head-mounted knock sensor (KS)

  1. Disconnect the Knock Sensor (KS) electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolt and the KS.

Engine block-mounted KS

  1. Remove the lower intake manifold. See «LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION -- 3.0L»(ref-348656-S42273785652009112700000) .
  2. Disconnect the KS electrical connector.
  3. Remove the bolt and the KS.

Engine block-mounted KS

  1. Install the KS and the bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  2. Connect the KS electrical connector.
  3. Install the lower intake manifold. See «LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION -- 3.0L»(ref-348656-S42273785652009112700000) .

Cylinder head-mounted KS

  1. Install the KS and the bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  2. Connect the KS electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) electrical connector.
  2. Rotate the CPP switch clockwise and remove the CPP switch.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the bolt and the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove 2 bolts and the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING -- 2.5L»(ref-348664-S29598792362009112700000) .
  2. Remove the outlet pipe. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION -- 2.5L»(ref-348655-S38737774142009112700000) .
  3. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector.
  4. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose from the EGR valve.
  5. Remove the 2 bolts and the EGR valve. To install, tighten to 20 N.m {2.0 kgf.m, 177 in.lbf}.
  6. Remove and discard the EGR valve gasket. Clean and inspect the EGR gasket mating surfaces CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve gasket NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces NOTE: Do not reuse the EGR valve gasket.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Install a new EGR valve gasket.
  8. Fill and bleed the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING -- 2.5L»(ref-348664-S29598792362009112700000) .

EGR MODULE (ESM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L

  1. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector.
  2. Disconnect the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube fitting from the EGR valve. To install, tighten to 40 N.m {4.0 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.
  3. Remove the 2 bolts and the EGR valve. To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  4. Remove and discard the EGR valve gasket. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve gasket NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces. NOTE: Do not reuse the EGR valve gasket.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 66: MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-373073-S06960946762010100600000) .
  2. Disconnect the MAP electrical connector.
  3. Using a tool like KD Tool #58181 or Lisle T25 Torx Bit, remove the screw and the MAP sensor. To install, tighten to 3 N.m (0.3 kgf.m, 27 in.lbf).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Lubricate the MAP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

Scheme 67: MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
  1. Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolt and the MAP sensor. To install, tighten to 6 N.m (0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf). When installing the sensor, if the bolt fails to hold specified torque, relocate the sensor and retain, using the auxiliary bolt hole in the upper intake manifold.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Clean and inspect the sealing surface.
