ENGINE IGNITION

The electronic ignition (El) system is a coil-on-plug ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the following components

  1. Ignition coil-on-plugs
  2. Spark plugs
  3. Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
  4. Camshaft position (CMP) sensor

The ignition coil-on-plugs

  1. change low voltage signals from the PCM to high-voltage pulses.
  2. supply the high-voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
  3. are connected directly to each spark plug.
  4. have replaceable coil boots.

spark plugs

  1. change high-voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.

The CKP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
  3. provides base timing and crankshaft speed (RPM) to the PCM.

The CMP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. provides camshaft rotational location information to the PCM.

3.0L Only

The CMP sensor

  1. is mounted in the front cover.
  2. is triggered by the high point mark on the LH exhaust camshaft.
  3. originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum-enhanced active electrode for long life.

  1. Inspect the spark plug for a bridged gap. Check for deposit build-up closing the gap between the electrodes. Deposits are caused by oil or carbon fouling. Install a new spark plug.
  2. Check for oil fouling. Check for wet, black deposits on the insulator shell bore electrodes, caused by excessive oil entering the combustion chamber through worn rings and pistons, excessive valve-to-guide clearance or worn or loose bearings. Correct the oil leak concern. Install a new spark plug.
  3. Inspect for carbon fouling. Look for black, dry, fluffy carbon deposits on the insulator tips, exposed shell surfaces and electrodes, caused by a spark plug with an incorrect heat range, dirty air cleaner, too rich a fuel mixture or excessive idling. Install new spark plugs.
  4. Inspect for normal burning. Check for light tan or gray deposits on the firing tip.
  5. Inspect for pre-ignition, identified by melted electrodes and a possibly damaged insulator. Metallic deposits on the insulator indicate engine damage. This may be caused by incorrect ignition timing, wrong type of fuel or the unauthorized installation of a heli-coil insert in place of the spark plug threads. Install a new spark plug.
  6. Inspect for overheating, identified by a white or light gray spots and with bluish-burnt appearance of electrodes. This is caused by engine overheating, wrong type of fuel, loose spark plugs, spark plugs with an incorrect heat range, low fuel pump pressure or incorrect ignition timing. Install a new spark plug.
  7. Inspect for fused deposits, identified by melted or spotty deposits resembling bubbles or blisters. These are caused by sudden acceleration. Install a new spark plug.

Scheme 12: IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  2. Remove the 4 stud bolts and the ignition coils. To install, tighten to 8 N.m {0.8 kg .m, 71 in. lb.}. NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal.
  3. Inspect the coil seals for rips, nicks or tears. Remove and discard any damaged coil seals. To install, slide the new coil seal onto the coil until fully seated at the top of the coil.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.

Scheme 13: SPARK PLUGS REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L
  1. Remove the ignition coils. See «IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L»(ref-348659-S03372976482009112700000) .
  2. Remove the spark plugs. Tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kg. m, 106 in. lb.}. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, or damage can occur to the cylinder head or spark plug. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs.
  3. Inspect spark plugs. See «SPARK PLUG INSPECTION»(ref-348659-S29085845782009112700000) .
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
