Assembly Note

Note. If a seat equipped with a seat-mounted side air bag system is being repaired the air bag system must be deactivated per the deactivation procedure contained in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article of the appropriate car/truck service manual.

Note. Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.

Note. Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tool must be installed in side air bag connector at the floor connector. The restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed prior to operating the vehicle.

Note. Diagnostics may be carried out on seat systems other than the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic tool is installed under the seat in the side air bag to floor connector.

Note. After diagnosing/repairing a seat system the restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed before operating the vehicle.

Note. A repair is made by installing a new part only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.

Note. If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seatback pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be installed. A new seatback frame should be installed if necessary.

1. Install the side air bag module. Install the side air bag module. Install the nuts.
2. Route the side air bag module wire harness. Install the locators to the seat backrest frame. All Vehicles
3. Install the front backrest rest pad to the front backseat rest frame.
4. Install the front seat backrest trim cover.
5. Connect the front seat backrest J-retainer.
6. If equipped, install the headrest guides and headrest.
7. Install the front seat backrest. Install the backrest. Install the pivot nut.
8. Install the front seat backrest bolts, if equipped with heated seats, connect the backrest heated grid electrical connector.
9. Install the inboard seat cushion side shield.
10. Install the outboard seat cushion side shield. Install the shield, if equipped with a power/heated seat, connect the electrical connector(s). Install the screw. Install the seat backrest lever handle.
11. If equipped, install the seat height adjustment control. CAUTION: Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
12. Install the driver seat. Position the driver seat, if equipped with power seats, connect the electrical connector. Install the seat track to floor bolts.
13. If equipped with power seats, connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
14. Position the driver seat forward.
15. Install the seat track to floor nuts.
16. If equipped with power seats, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT . Vehicles with side air bag WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
17. Remove the special tool from the driver seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.
18. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector. All vehicles WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
19. Remove the special tool from the driver seat safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.
20. Connect the driver seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
21. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
22. With the remaining special tools still in place, prove out the air bag system. Refer to «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170347-S38220482782005011000000) .
23. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT . WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
24. Remove the special tool from the passenger-side safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.
25. Connect the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. Vehicles with side air bag WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
26. Remove the special tool from the passenger seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.
27. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector. All vehicles WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
28. Remove the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
29. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
30. Raise the glove compartment. Press the locking tabs. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
31. Remove the special tool from the steering column harness side of the driver air bag module electrical connector.
32. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
33. Install the driver air bag connector access cover.
34. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
35. Prove out the air bag system. Refer to «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170347-S38220482782005011000000) .
36. Check the restraint system for correct operation.

Note. Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.

7. Disconnect the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
8. Connect the special tool to the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector. Vehicles with side air bag
9. Disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.
10. Connect the special tool to the passenger seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector. All vehicles
11. Lower the glove compartment. Press the locking tabs.
12. Disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
13. Connect the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
14. Lower the driver air bag connector access cover.
15. Disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
16. Connect the special tool to the steering column harness side of the driver air bag module electrical connector.
17. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
18. Prove out the air bag system. Refer to «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170347-S38220482782005011000000) article.
19. Remove the seat track to floor nuts.
20. Position the driver seat rearward.
21. If equipped with power seats, disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT . CAUTION: Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
22. Remove the driver seat. Remove the seat track to floor bolts. Remove the driver seat, if equipped with power seats, disconnect the electrical connector.
23. Disconnect the seat cushion trim cover J-clips.
24. Remove the front seat cushion trim and pad from the front seat cushion frame. If equipped with heated seats, disconnect the backrest heated grid and the seat cushion heated grid electrical connectors.
25. Separate the front seat cushion trim from the front seat cushion pad.

Note. Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.

Note. Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seat in the vehicle. 1. Install the front seat cushion trim to the front seat cushion pad.
2. Install the front seat cushion trim and pad to the front seat cushion frame. If equipped with heated seats, connect the backrest heated grid and the seat cushion heated grid electrical connectors.
3. Connect the seat cushion trim cover J-clips. CAUTION: Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
4. Install the driver seat. Position the driver seat, if equipped with power seats, connect the electrical connector. Install the seat track to floor bolts.

6. Position the driver seat forward.
7. Install the seat track to floor nuts.
8. If equipped with power seats, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute. Refer BATTERY DISCONNECT . 9. Remove the special tool from the driver seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.
10. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector. All vehicles WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
11. Remove the special tool from the driver-side safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.
12. Connect the driver seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
13. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
14. With the remaining special tools still in place, prove out the air bag system. Refer to «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170347-S38220482782005011000000) .

28. Check the restraint system for correct operation.

16. Connect the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
17. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
18. Prove out the air bag system. Refer to «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170347-S38220482782005011000000) .
19. Remove the seat track to floor nuts.
20. Position the passenger seat rearward. CAUTION: Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
21. Remove the passenger seat. Remove the seat track to floor bolts. Remove the passenger seat, if equipped with heated seats, disconnect the electrical connector.
22. Disconnect the seat cushion trim cover J-clips.
23. Remove the front seat cushion trim and pad from the front seat cushion frame. If equipped with heated seats, disconnect the backrest heated grid and the seat cushion heated grid electrical connectors.
24. Separate the front seat cushion trim from the front seat cushion pad.

22. Remove the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
23. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
