TRANSAXLE FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT) SENSOR

The TFT sensor is located on the solenoid valve body. It is a temperature-sensitive device called a thermistor. The resistance value of the TFT sensor will vary with temperature. The PCM monitors the voltage across the TFT sensor to determine the temperature of the transaxle fluid. The PCM uses this signal to determine shift scheduling and to control line pressure for cold and hot temperature operation. The PCM also inhibits torque converter clutch (TCC) operation at low transaxle temperature and adjusts electronic pressure control (EPC) pressures for temperature.

FLUID PUMP

The pump provides the volume of fluid required to charge the torque converter, main control valve body, cooling system, lubrication system, and hydraulic apply devices. The transaxle uses a positive displacement gear and crescent-type pump which is shaft-driven by the torque converter.

FLUID LEVEL & FILTER

Fluid from the sump area (formed by the transaxle case and converter housing) flows through a filter to the pump. The filter has a recirculation port connected to the main control area of the case and receives fluid from the main regulator exhaust. This provides fluid under pressure to aid the pump in higher efficiency operation. A thermostatic fluid control valve prevents foaming of fluid by maintaining a sump level below the rotating components. The two-piece chain drive cover prevents foaming by not allowing the chain to rotate in the fluid. A magnet on the underside of the chain cover collects unwanted magnetic material.

TRANSAXLE FLUID COOLER - BACKFLUSHING & CLEANING

CAUTIONTest the Torque Converter Cleaner to make sure that a vigorous fluid flow is present before proceeding. Install a new system filter if flow is weak or contaminated.

Note. Rubber hoses must be attached to the ends of this fluid cooler tubes to connect them to the cleaner.

  1. Connect the cleaner pressure and return lines appropriately. Connect the pressure line to the fluid cooler inlet tube. Connect the return line to the fluid cooler outlet tube. Place the outlet end of the return line in the solvent tank reservoir. NOTE: Cycling the solvent pump on and off will help dislodge contaminants in the cooler system.
  2. Switch the solvent pumps on. Allow the solvent to circulate a minimum of five minutes.
  3. Switch the solvent pump off.
  4. Disconnect the cleaner pressure line at the fluid cooler tube.
  5. Using compressed air, blow through the fluid cooler inlet tube until all solvent is removed.
  6. Remove the rubber hoses from the fluid cooler tubes.

  1. Remove the battery and tray.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the battery tray bracket.
  3. Remove the battery tray bracket.
  4. Remove the breather tube and disconnect the mass air flow (MAF)/intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the intake tube and the air cleaner cover.
  6. Remove the vent tube hose.
  7. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «LIFTING»(ref-178489-S02006613742005061600000) .
  8. Remove the LH front wheel.
  9. Remove the LH splash shield. NOTE: Remove the bolts in the indicated sequence.
  10. Remove the main control cover.
  11. Remove the main control cover gasket.

  1. Position the main control cover gasket on the case.
  2. Position the main control cover on the case and loosely install the bolts.
  3. Tighten the bolts in sequence as indicated.
  4. Install the LH splash shield.
  5. Install the LH front wheel.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the vent tube hose.
  8. Install the intake tube and the air cleaner cover.
  9. Install the breather tube and connect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  10. Install the battery tray bracket.
  11. Connect the wiring harness to the battery tray bracket.
  12. Install the battery tray. .
  13. Connect the battery cables.
  14. Check the transaxle fluid, add fluid as necessary using MERCON(R) Automatic Transaxle Fluid (ATF).
  15. Start the engine and move the transaxle range selector lever through all gear positions. Refill as necessary.

  1. Disconnect the battery cables. Refer to «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-154598-S40263343402005062800000) .
  2. Remove the battery and tray.
  3. Disconnect the breather tube and mass air flow (MAF) / intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.
  4. Remove the intake tube and air cleaner cover.
  5. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness electrical connector and TR sensor connector.
  6. Disconnect the shift cable.
  7. Remove the shift cable and bracket, and position out of the way.
  8. Remove the vent tube hose.
  9. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «LIFTING»(ref-178489-S02006613742005061600000) .
  10. Remove the LH front wheel.
  11. Remove the splash shield.
  12. Remove the main control cover.
  13. Remove the main control cover gasket. NOTE: Remove the bolts in the indicated sequence.
  14. Remove the main control valve body bolts. NOTE: Do not damage the manual valve.
  15. Lift the main control valve body while disconnecting the manual valve link.
  16. Depress the retaining tabs and push the solenoid valve body electrical connector down through the transaxle case.
  17. Make sure the manual valve control lever does not fall out of the main control valve body while removing from the vehicle.
