Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-221990-S21965261202006022600000) .
  2. Remove the screws and the retaining guides.
  3. Remove the screws and remove the duct.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the defroster duct. See «DEFROSTER DUCT»(ref-221930-S20145416872006022600000) .
  2. Remove the screws from the front side of the instrument panel.
  3. Remove the screw for the left vent duct.
  4. Remove the screw for the right vent duct.
  5. Remove the screws for the center vent duct and remove the vent duct.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the driver and front passenger seats. See «DRIVER SEAT»(ref-221979-S35730798912006022600000) and see «PASSENGER SEAT»(ref-221979-S26122778272006022600000) .
  2. Remove the utility compartment. Remove the four plastic fasteners. Remove the utility compartment. Disconnect the electrical connection.
  3. Remove LH and RH front door scuff plates.
  4. Remove LH and RH lower A-pillar panels.
  5. Remove the LH foot rest.
  6. Pull back the carpet to gain access to the rear floor vent.
  7. Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer.
  8. Remove the floor duct pin-type retainers and remove the duct.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the engine coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core and release the support strap from the cowl panel.
  3. Disconnect the heater hose from the hose connection.
  4. Disconnect the bypass hose from the hose connection.
  5. Disconnect the oil cooler hose from the hose connection.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the hoses with Rubber Suspension Insulator Lube.

  1. Drain the engine coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  3. Disconnect the heater outlet hose from the water hose connection.
  4. Disconnect the heater hose connection from the engine.
  5. Remove the heater hose from the engine compartment.
  6. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater hose junction.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 85: HEATER CORE AND EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING
  1. Drain the engine coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) for 2.3L engine or see «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) for 3.0L (4V) engine.
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  3. Remove the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-221990-S21965261202006022600000) .
  4. If equipped with A/C, remove the A/C evaporator core housing. See «EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING»(ref-221930-S25396807252006022600000) .
  5. Remove the heater core housing. Remove the heater core housing retaining nuts. Carefully remove the heater core housing to avoid spilling engine coolant in the passenger area.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before the heater core is removed. See HEATER CORE PRESSURE TEST .

  1. Drain the engine coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221820-S21265484122006022600000) for 2.3L engine or see «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) for 3.0L (4V) engine.
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  3. Remove the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-221990-S21965261202006022600000) .
  4. Remove the heater blending door levers. Remove the screw for heater blending door. Remove the levers for the blending door.
  5. Remove the heater core. Remove the three screws. Remove the cover for the heater core and pull the heater core out of the housing. NOTE: Before installing the temperature control cable, make sure the blend door, cable and temperature switch are correctly positioned. See «TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR CONTROL CABLE»(ref-221931-S04356523602006022600000) .
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Discharge and recover the refrigerant. See «DISCHARGING AND RECOVERY»(ref-221929-S14252176892006022600000) .
  2. Remove the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-221990-S21965261202006022600000) .
  3. Disconnect the refrigerant line spring lock couplings from the A/C evaporator core. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  4. Disconnect the vacuum hose.
  5. Remove the evaporator core housing. Remove the nuts. Carefully remove the evaporator core housing to avoid spilling PAG compressor oil in the passenger area. NOTE: Feed the vacuum hose through the opening in the cowl while installing the housing. NOTE: Before installing the temperature control cable, make sure the blend door, cable and temperature switch are correctly positioned. See «TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR CONTROL CABLE»(ref-221931-S04356523602006022600000) .
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not necessary when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C component or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If an A/C evaporator core leak is suspected, the A/C evaporator core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, See A/C EVAPORATOR/CONDENSER ON-VEHICLE LEAK TEST .

Note. The evaporator core and evaporator housing must be installed as a complete unit.

  1. Remove the A/C evaporator core housing. See «EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING»(ref-221930-S25396807252006022600000) .
  2. Transfer, the components from the old evaporator core housing to the new evaporator core housing.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C evaporator core with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) .

Scheme 86: AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 2.3L
CAUTIONTo prevent refrigerant system contamination, if you are installing a new A/C compressor because the A/C compressor has failed internally, you must use the following procedures

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not necessary when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If an A/C Flusher is available, carry out the air conditioning (A/C) system flushing general procedure. See AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM FLUSHING .

Note. If the A/C Flusher is not available, carry out the refrigerant system filtering following air conditioning (A/C) component installation general procedure. See REFRIGERANT SYSTEM FILTERING FOLLOWING AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPONENT INSTALLATION .

  1. Install a new A/C evaporator core orifice. See «EVAPORATOR CORE ORIFICE»(ref-221930-S09932713042006022600000) .
  2. Remove the drive belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S41124517472006022600000) .
  3. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  4. Remove the A/C line nuts and disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor.
  5. Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C compressor with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) . Lubricate the new A/C manifold O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil.
  7. Recharge the A/C system. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM EVACUATION AND CHARGING»(ref-221929-S34234551262006022600000) .

Scheme 87: AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 3.0L
CAUTIONTo prevent refrigerant system contamination, if you are installing a new A/C compressor because the A/C compressor has failed internally, you must use the following procedures

Note. If an A/C Flusher is available, carry out the air conditioning (A/C) system flushing general procedure. For additional information, see AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM FLUSHING .

Note. If the A/C Flusher is not available, carry out the refrigerant system filtering following air conditioning (A/C) component installation general procedure. See REFRIGERANT SYSTEM FILTERING FOLLOWING AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPONENT INSTALLATION .

  1. Install a new A/C evaporator core orifice. See «EVAPORATOR CORE ORIFICE»(ref-221930-S09932713042006022600000) .
  2. Remove the drive belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221817-S07836805682006022600000) .
  3. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  5. Remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly bolt from the top of the A/C compressor and disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly.
  6. Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C compressor with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) . Lubricate the new A/C manifold O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to the threads of the A/C manifold and tube assembly bolt.
  8. Recharge the A/C system. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM EVACUATION AND CHARGING»(ref-221929-S34234551262006022600000) .
  1. Remove the air conditioning compressor. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221930-S29186547602006022600000) .
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Remove the A/C compressor. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 2.3L»(ref-221930-S40676004682006022600000) , or See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221930-S29186547602006022600000) .
  2. Using the special tool, remove the A/C clutch bolt.
  3. Remove the disk and hub assembly and the A/C clutch hub spacer. Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch to force it from the compressor shaft. Lift the disk and hub assembly and the A/C clutch hub spacer from the compressor shaft.
  4. Remove the pulley snap ring.
  5. Remove the A/C clutch pulley. CAUTION: Do not use air tools. The A/C clutch field coil can be easily damaged.
  6. Remove the A/C clutch field coil. Note the location of the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. Using the special tools, remove the A/C clutch field coil.

Installation

  1. Clean the A/C clutch field coil and pulley mounting surfaces. CAUTION: Do not use air tools. The A/C clutch field coil can be easily damaged. NOTE: Position the clutch field coil on the A/C compressor as previously marked.
  2. Using the special tools, install the A/C clutch field coil. NOTE: The A/C clutch pulley is a tight fit on the A/C compressor head. It must be correctly aligned during installation.
  3. Install the A/C clutch pulley.
  4. Install the pulley snap ring with the bevel side out.
  5. Place one nominal thickness A/C clutch hub spacer inside the clutch hub spline opening.
  6. Install the disk and hub assembly.
  7. Using the special tool, install and tighten the A/C clutch bolt.
  8. Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by removing or adding A/C clutch hub spacers.
  9. Install the A/C compressor. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 2.3L»(ref-221930-S40676004682006022600000) , or See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221930-S29186547602006022600000) .

Scheme 88: CONDENSER CORE

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not necessary when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If an A/C condenser core leak is suspected, the A/C condenser core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. See A/C EVAPORATOR/CONDENSER ON-VEHICLE LEAK TEST .

  1. Recover the refrigerant. See «DISCHARGING AND RECOVERY»(ref-221929-S14252176892006022600000) .
  2. Remove the front bumper cover. See «FRONT BUMPER COVER»(ref-221971-S10314968712006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  3. Remove the nuts from the two condenser core A/C line fittings.
  4. Remove the screws and the A/C condenser core brackets. NOTE: When removing the A/C condenser core, disconnect the two A/C line fittings from the A/C condenser core.
  5. Remove the A/C condenser core.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C condenser core with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) . Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil.

Scheme 89: SUCTION ACCUMULATOR
  1. Recover the refrigerant. See «DISCHARGING AND RECOVERY»(ref-221929-S14252176892006022600000) .
  2. Remove the A/C cycling switch. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) CYCLING SWITCH»(ref-221930-S11521456522006022600000) .
  3. Remove the nuts from the A/C manifold and tube mounting bracket. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  4. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube from the suction accumulator. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  5. Remove the two suction accumulator mounting bracket nuts. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  6. Disconnect the suction line from the A/C evaporator core. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  7. Remove the suction accumulator.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new suction accumulator with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) .

Scheme 90

Scheme 90: AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) CYCLING SWITCH
  1. Remove the A/C cycling switch. Disconnect the A/C cycling switch electrical connector. Remove the A/C cycling switch.
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil.
  1. Remove the nuts from the A/C manifold and tube mounting bracket. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  2. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube from the suction accumulator. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. See «FRONT BUMPER COVER»(ref-221971-S10314968712006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  4. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C manifold and tube to A/C condenser core air conditioning line (peanut) fitting.
  5. Position aside the cruise control actuator assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical harness pin-type retainers. Remove the nuts.
  6. Raise and support the vehicle. See «LIFTING»(ref-221813-S42843428602006022500000) .
  7. Remove the RH splash shield.
  8. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  10. Remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly bolt.
  11. Remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly through the bottom of the vehicle.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to the threads of the A/C manifold retaining bolt.

Scheme 91: CONDENSER TO EVAPORATOR LINE
  1. Remove the A/C pressure cut-off switch. See «PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH»(ref-221930-S27037735852006022600000) .
  2. Remove the evaporator core orifice. See «EVAPORATOR CORE ORIFICE»(ref-221930-S09932713042006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  3. Disconnect the evaporator line from the A/C evaporator core. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  4. Remove the evaporator line support nut and the line.
  5. Remove the front bumper cover. See «FRONT BUMPER COVER»(ref-221971-S10314968712006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  6. Remove the nut and disconnect the liquid line from the A/C condenser core and remove line.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG compressor oil. See «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-221929-S05140411582006022600000) .
  1. Remove the pressure cut-off switch. Disconnect the A/C pressure cut-off switch electrical connector. Remove the A/C pressure cut-off switch.
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil.
CAUTIONPlug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  1. Disconnect the liquid line from the evaporator line at the orifice tube. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  2. Engage the special tool onto the A/C evaporator core orifice.
  3. Hold the special tool T-handle stationary and rotate the special tool body to remove the A/C evaporator core orifice.
  4. If the A/C evaporator core orifice is broken, screw the end of the special tool into the broken A/C evaporator core orifice.
  5. Hold the special tool T-handle stationary and rotate the special tool body to remove the broken A/C evaporator core orifice.
  1. Lubricate and install the O-ring seals on the A/C evaporator core orifice using PAG Compressor Oil.
  2. Place the A/C evaporator core orifice into the special tool.
  3. Using the special tool, insert the A/C evaporator core orifice into the condenser to evaporator line until seated.
  4. Remove the special tool.
  5. Connect the liquid line to the evaporator line at the orifice tube. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  6. Recharge the A/C system. See «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM EVACUATION AND CHARGING»(ref-221929-S34234551262006022600000) .

Scheme 92: SUCTION ACCUMULATOR TO COMPRESSOR LINE - 2.3L
  1. Remove the nuts from the A/C manifold and tube mounting bracket. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  2. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube from the suction accumulator. See «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-221929-S21790472782006022600000) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. See «FRONT BUMPER COVER»(ref-221971-S10314968712006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  4. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C manifold and tube to A/C condenser core air conditioning line (peanut) fitting.
  5. Position aside the cruise control actuator assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical harness pin-type retainers. Remove the nuts.
  6. Raise and support the vehicle. See «LIFTING»(ref-221813-S42843428602006022500000) .
  7. Remove the RH splash shield.
  8. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  10. Remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly bolt.
  11. Remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly through the bottom of the vehicle.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to the threads of the A/C manifold retaining bolt.

  1. Remove the front bumper cover. See «FRONT BUMPER COVER»(ref-221971-S10314968712006022600000) . CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  2. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C discharge line (peanut) fitting.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. See «LIFTING»(ref-221813-S42843428602006022500000) .
  4. Remove the RH splash shield.
  5. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
  6. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  7. Remove the A/C discharge tube line bolt.
  8. Remove the A/C discharge tube line through the bottom of the vehicle.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to the threads of the A/C manifold retaining bolt.
  1. Remove the disk and hub assembly from the A/C compressor. See «CLUTCH AND CLUTCH FIELD COIL»(ref-221930-S26199459012006022600000) .
  2. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal felt from the nose of the A/C compressor. CAUTION: To prevent refrigerant system contamination, do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the A/C compressor.
  3. Clean the compressor nose area.
  4. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal snap ring.
  5. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal from the A/C compressor.
CAUTIONTo prevent refrigerant system contamination, do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the A/C compressor.
  1. Clean the A/C compressor nose area.
  2. Lubricate the shaft seal and special tool with PAG Compressor Oil. Place the shaft seal on the special tool.
  3. Position the special tool, with the shaft seal, over the A/C compressor shaft.
  4. Using the special tool, push the shaft seal onto the A/C compressor shaft until seated.
  5. Using the special tool, install the shaft seal snap ring.
  6. Carry out the A/C compressor external leak test. See «A/C COMPRESSOR EXTERNAL LEAK TEST»(ref-221929-S02369434132006022600000) .
  7. Using the special tool, install the shaft seal felt.
  8. Install the disk and hub assembly. See «CLUTCH AND CLUTCH FIELD COIL»(ref-221930-S26199459012006022600000) .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. See «DISCHARGING AND RECOVERY»(ref-221929-S14252176892006022600000) .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See «LIFTING»(ref-221813-S42843428602006022500000) .
  3. Remove the RH splash shield.
  4. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector. CAUTION: Plug all ports to prevent contamination from dirt or moisture.
  5. If equipped with the 3.0L (4V) engine, remove the A/C manifold and tube assembly bolt and disconnect the A/C manifold and tube. NOTE: Vehicles with the 2.3L engine shown, vehicles with the 3.0L (4V) engine similar.
  6. Remove the A/C compressor pressure relief valve.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Compressor Oil.
