Smart Junction Box (SJB)
The SJB is connected to the medium speed controller area network (CAN) communications bus. If one of the bus wires becomes shorted to ground or voltage, communications can continue at a reduced level. Check circuits 1847 (W/O), and 1848 (P/O) between the SJB J-2280a, the instrument cluster 0922-101 and the data link connector (DLC) D-01. Total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the medium speed CAN, damage to the DLC D-01, or damage to the SJB J-2280a. Since both the SJB and the instrument cluster share network termination responsibilities, a problem in either of these modules can result in a medium speed CAN failure. The SJB is a combination of a multifunction control module and an interior power junction box. SJB functions control multiple systems which include
- illuminated entry and interior lamps
- exterior lamps
- power door locks
- smart locks
- keyless entry keypad
- remote keyless entry (RKE)
- warning chimes
- rear windshield wiper
The SJB is equipped on all vehicles and is located under the front passenger-side floor console. For removal information, See SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) . For additional information on interior lamps and illuminated entry, See INTERIOR LIGHTING . For additional information on exterior lighting, see EXTERIOR LIGHTING . For additional information on power door locks, keyless entry keypad and RKE, see HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS . For additional information on the rear windshield wiper, see WIPERS AND WASHERS -- REAR . For additional information on anti-theft, see ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) . For additional information on the climate control system, see CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM . For additional information on the warning chimes, see GAUGES AND WARNING DEVICES .
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
The PCM is on the high speed CAN. The PCM controls the engine for better fuel economy, emissions control, failure mode detection and storage, and all passive anti-theft system (PATS) functions. If one of the bus wires becomes shorted to ground or voltage, communications can continue at a reduced level. Check the high speed CAN circuits (W) and (B), between the PCM 0140-175b/275b and the DLC D-01. Total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the high speed CAN, damage to the DLC D-01, damage to the PCM 0140-175b/275b, or a problem in the in-line connector. Since both the PCM and the instrument cluster share network termination responsibilities, a problem in either of these modules can result in a high speed CAN failure. For additional PATS information, See ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) . For additional PCM information, see the Powertrain Control Module removal and installation information, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
Instrument Cluster
The instrument cluster is on the high speed CAN. It is an analog face cluster with a digital odometer. The instrument cluster displays a variety of information. If one of the bus wires becomes shorted to ground or voltage, communications can continue at a reduced level. Check the high speed CAN circuits (W) and (B), between the instrument cluster 0922-101 and the DLC D-01. Total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the CAN network, damage to the DLC D-01, damage to the instrument cluster 0922-101, or a problem in the in-line connector. Since both the PCM and the instrument cluster share network termination responsibilities, a problem in either of these modules can result in a high speed CAN failure. For additional instrument cluster information, see GAUGES AND WARNING DEVICES .
Restraint Control Module (RCM)
The RCM is on the international standards organization (ISO) 9141 network. The RCM controls the deployment of the air bags based on sensor input. The ISO communication network will not function if the wire is shorted to ground or battery voltage. Check the network circuit between the RCM C310a and the DLC D-01. Total resistance value must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the ISO network, damage to the DLC D-01, damage to the RCM C310a, or a problem in the in-line connector. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) .
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module
The ABS Module is on the high speed CAN. The ABS module controls the brake pressure to the four wheels to keep the vehicle under control while braking. If one of the bus wires becomes shorted to ground or voltage, communications can continue at a reduced level. Check the high speed CAN circuits (W) and (B), between the ABS module 0413-101 and the DLC D-01. Total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the high speed CAN, damage to the DLC D-01, damage to the ABS module 0413-101, or a problem in the in-line connector. See ANTI-LOCK CONTROL .
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module
The 4WD control module is on the high speed CAN. The 4WD control module regulates the duty cycle to the active torque coupling between 2WD and 4WD when more traction is required. Check the high speed CAN circuits (W) and (B), between the 4WD control module 0318-01 and the DLC D-01. Total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the high speed CAN, damage to the DLC D-01, damage to the 4WD control module 0318-01, or a problem in the in-line connector. See FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS .

Definition of Terms
Calibration Update: Some modules are designed to be flashed or reflashed with complete new software packages. This process of reflashing the module is a calibration update.
Programmable Parameters: These are options contained within the existing software. These include items such as tire size, customer preference items and anti-theft options. The current settings are downloaded from an existing module then uploaded to a new module. They can also be configured using the WDS or equivalent Tester. Programming parameters is very different from updating calibrations as no software is changed, only the options already contained in the software.
Module Programming Methods
Some modules must be programmed as part of the repair procedure. If this procedure is not followed the module will not function correctly and may set a number of DTCs, including B2477 or P1639, which indicate that some necessary data has not been programmed into the module.
Modules that need programming should not be exchanged between vehicles. In most cases the parameter values or settings are unique to that vehicle, and if not set correctly will cause concerns or faults.
WDS or equivalent Tester will automatically attempt to retrieve the module configuration information from all modules. If the module cannot communicate, the WDS or equivalent Tester will either request As-Built data or display a list of items that will need to be manually configured. The WDS or equivalent Tester will program the module based on the data entered.
There are three different methods that are used for module programming
- programmable module installation (PMI)
- calibration update
- programmable parameters
Some modules do not support all three methods.
Programmable Parameters
This method is used to configure parameters that may be modified. Not all features controlled by the module are listed in this configuration method. See the Module Configuration Index for a list of features by system.
If a module that has been modified using programmable parameters needs to be installed, the PMI procedure will maintain the parameters in their altered state if WDS or equivalent Tester is able to communicate with the old module during vehicle ID. Otherwise, programmable parameters may be needed to return them to the altered state.

ANTI-THEFT SECURITY ACCESS
Note. The security access procedure is utilized to obtain passive anti-theft system (PATS) security access. PATS security access must be granted to erase ignition keys, enable/disable unlimited key mode, and enable/disable the spare key programming switch (PID SPARE_KEY). The security access procedure invokes an inherent 10-minute time delay prior to granting security access during which the WDS or equivalent Tester must remain connected to the vehicle. Once security access has been granted, a security access command menu is displayed which offers various command options. (See the Powertrain Control Module Configuration Command Index.)
Note. Once security access has been granted, multiple security access commands should be executed (if necessary) prior to exiting the command menu. This avoids an additional security access procedure and the associated 10-minute time delay.
- From the WDS or equivalent Tester Service Function card, enter PCM. Select SECURITY ACCESS. This procedure will take 10 minutes to carry out, during which the ignition must be ON and the WDS or equivalent Tester must be connected to the vehicle.
- After the 10 minute security access procedure has been completed, a new menu will be displayed with command options. Select only those functions necessary before exiting out of this menu. Once exited out of this menu, the security access procedure must be repeated again to carry out additional commands.
KEY PROGRAMMING SWITCH STATE CONTROL
Note. The spare key programming switch is a diagnostic tool-programmable switch which provides the capability to enable/disable the customer spare key programming procedure. This procedure is in the Owner Literature spare key programming procedure or under KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS . This programmable switch is provided as a convenience for customers who may not want the spare key programming procedure available to the vehicle driver.
Note. The spare key programming switch state can be viewed by VIC PCM SPARE_KY.
- Insert a programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition switch to ON.

Note. If the programming procedure is successful, the new key(s) will start the vehicle and the THEFT indicator will illuminate for approximately 3 seconds.
Note. If the programming procedure is not successful, the new key(s) will not start the vehicle and the THEFT indicator will flash. If the programming procedure was not successful, repeat the key programming procedure from Step 1. If the failure repeats, see Diagnosis and Testing to review the DTCs and carry out the pinpoint tests as necessary.
Note. A maximum of 8 ignition keys can be programmed to a passive anti-theft system (PATS) equipped vehicle. If more are needed, See KEY PROGRAMMING SWITCH STATE CONTROL .
Note. If the steps are not carried out as described, the programming procedure will end.
Note. Ignition keys must have correct mechanical key cut for the vehicle and must be PATS encoded keys.
Note. If the vehicle is in unlimited key mode, this spare key programming procedure still functions. Any 2 keys that can start the vehicle may be used to program in an additional unlimited key.
- Insert the first programmed ignition key into the ignition and turn the ignition from OFF to ON (maintain the ignition in ON for 1 second).
