A/C ALWAYS ON OR COMPRESSOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY

  1. Stuck engagement.
  2. A/C pressure switch stuck closed.
  3. A/C relay is stuck closed.
  4. Short to ground between A/C switch and PCM.
  5. Short to ground between A/C relay and PCM.
  6. A/C relay to magnetic clutch circuit short to battery power.

A/C DOES NOT TURN OFF DURING WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (WOT)

  1. Check for accelerator position sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for incorrect adjustment of accelerator position sensor.
  3. Check for A/C Clutch Relay (ACCR) malfunction (B2300, B3000 and B4000).
  4. Check for loose loosely installed accelerator position sensor.

A/C DOES NOT WORK SUFFICIENTLY

  1. Check for improper charging amount.
  2. Check for open A/C magnetic clutch
  3. Check for open circuit between A/C relay and A/C magnetic clutch.
  4. Check for poor ground of A/C magnetic clutch.
  5. Check for refrigerant pressure switch stuck open.
  6. Check A/C relay stuck open.
  7. Check for seized A/C compressor.
  8. Check for open circuit between A/C switch and PCM through both refrigerant pressure switch and A/C amplifier.

COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS - OVERHEATING

  1. Check for improper coolant level.
  2. Check for blown fuses.
  3. Check for coolant leakage.
  4. Check for excessive A/C system pressure.
  5. Check for improper A/C system operation.
  6. Check for improper water/anti-freeze mixture.
  7. Check for reverse rotation of fans.
  8. Check for poor radiator condition.
  9. Check for thermostat malfunction.
  10. Check for damage to radiator hoses.
  11. Check for inoperative condenser fan.
  12. Check for improper or damaged radiator cap.
  13. Check for inoperative cooling fan.
  14. Check for coolant overflow system malfunction.
  15. Check for improper tension of drive belt.
  16. Check for drive belt damage.
  17. Check for fan control module malfunction.

COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS - RUNS COLD

  1. Check for thermostat malfunction.
  2. Check for condenser fan system malfunction.
  3. Check for cooling fan system malfunction

CRANKS NORMALLY BUT WILL NOT START

Note. If this symptom appears after engine stall, see ENGINE STALLS AT IDLE OR JUST AFTER STARTING .

  1. Check for no battery power supply to PCM.
  2. Check for air leakage from intake-air system.
  3. Check for open PCM ground or vehicle body ground.
  4. Check for improper operation of electronic throttle control system.
  5. Check for EGR valve malfunction
  6. Check for no signal from CKP sensor due to sensor or related wire.
  7. Check for no signal from CMP sensor due to sensor or related wire
  8. Check for low engine compression.
  9. Check for vacuum leakage.
  10. Check for disconnected harness connector.
  11. Check for spark leakage from high-tension leads.
  12. Check for poor fuel quality.
  13. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  14. Check for fuel pump cut-off switch malfunction (B2300, B3000, B4000 and Tribute).
  15. Check for air cleaner restriction.
  16. Check for restriction in exhaust system.
  17. Check for disconnected electrical connector.
  18. Check for open or short circuit in fuel pump and related harness.
  19. Check for inadequate fuel pressure.
  20. Check for fuel pump mechanical malfunction.

  9. Check for low engine compression.
  10. Check for erratic signal to ignition coil.
  11. Check for poor fuel quality.
  12. Check for PCV valve malfunction.

Blue Smoke (Burning Oil)

  1. Check for PCV system malfunction.
  2. Check for internal engine oil leakage.

White Smoke (Water In Combustion)

  1. Check for cooling system malfunction (coolant loss).
  2. Check for internal engine coolant leakage.

Black Smoke (Rich Fuel Mixture)

  1. Check for restricted air filter.
  2. Check for Intake-air system collapsed or restricted.
  3. Check for fuel return line restriction.
  4. Check for excessive fuel pressure.
  5. Check for improper engine compression.
  6. Check for injector fuel leakage.
  7. Check for ignition system malfunction.

EXHAUST SULPHUR (ROTTEN EGG) SMELL

Note. Slight sulphur smell may be normal. Catalyst with between 5000 and 10,000 miles or less (new vehicles or recently replaced catalyst) are likely to have sulphur smell due to highly active state of new catalyst.

  1. Check for disconnected or poorly connected electrical connectors.
  2. Check for charcoal canister malfunction.
  3. Check for disconnected or incorrect connection of vacuum lines.
  4. Check for improper fuel pressure.
  5. Check for poor fuel quality.

FAST IDLE OR RUN-ON

  1. Check for ECT sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for air leakage from intake-air system.
  3. Check for throttle body malfunction.
  4. Check for APP sensor misadjustment.
  5. Check for cruise control system operation improperly.
  6. Check for improper operation of electronic throttle control system.

FUEL DOES NOT SHUT OFF PROPERLY

  1. Check for clogged EVAP pipes.
  2. Check for non-return valve malfunction.
  3. Check for fuel shut-off valve malfunction.
  4. Check for fuel nozzle malfunction.
  5. Check for fuel nozzle is not inserted correctly.

FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT

  1. Check for excessive fuel pressure.
  2. Check for purge solenoid valve malfunction.
  3. Check for Fuel tank vent system blockage.
  4. Check for charcoal canister malfunction.
  5. Check for fuel leakage from fuel system.

HARD TO START, LONG CRANK, ERRATIC CRANK OR ERRATIC START

  1. Check for erratic signal to ignition coil.
  2. Check for vacuum leakage.
  3. Check for poor fuel quality.
  4. Check for starting system malfunction.
  5. Check for spark plug malfunction.
  6. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  7. Check for air leakage from intake-air system.
  8. Check for erratic signal from CKP sensor.
  9. Check for erratic signal from CMP sensor.
  10. Check for improper air/fuel mixture ratio control.
  11. Check for air cleaner restriction.
  12. Check for improper operation of electronic throttle control system.
  13. Check for PCV valve malfunction.

  16. Check for inadequate fuel pressure.

  18. Check for MAF sensor contamination.

KNOCKING OR PINGING DURING ACCELERATION OR CRUISE

  1. Check for cooling system malfunction (overheating).
  2. Check for Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor malfunction (B2300 and Tribute 2.0L).
  3. Check for ECT sensor malfunction.
  4. Check for IAT sensor malfunction.
  5. Check for MAF sensor circuit malfunction.
  6. Check for erratic signal from CMP sensor.
  7. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  8. Check for inadequate fuel pressure.
  9. Check for Knock Sensor (KS) malfunction.

LACK OR LOSS OF POWER DURING ACCELERATION OR CRUISE

  1. Check for improper A/C system operation.
  2. Check for erratic signal or no signal from CMP sensor.
  3. Check for air leakage from intake-air system parts.
  4. Check for air leakage from intake-air system parts.
  5. Check for improper operation of electronic throttle control system.
  6. Check for purge control solenoid malfunction.
  7. Check for EGR valve malfunction.
  8. Check for dragging brakes.
  9. Check for erratic signal from CKP sensor.
  10. Check for low engine compression.
  11. Check for vacuum leakage.
  12. Check for poor fuel quality.
  13. Check for erratic signal ignition coil.

  4. Check for improper air/fuel ratio mixture control .
  5. Check for A/C Clutch Switch (ACCS) malfunction.
  6. Check for EVAP control system malfunction.
  7. Check for APP sensor or related circuit malfunction.
  8. Check for APP sensor misadjustment.
  9. Check for Neutral/clutch switch or related circuit malfunction (MTX).
  10. Check for TR switch or related circuit malfunction (ATX)
  11. Check for TP sensor or related circuit malfunction.
  12. Check for MAF sensor or related circuit malfunction.
  13. Check for improper operation of A/C magnetic clutch.

MIL ILLUMINATED INCORRECTLY

Note. If MIL blinks at steady rate, misfire condition could possibly exist.

  1. Check for emission related concern (DTCs are in PCM).
  2. Check for short to ground circuit between MIL (located on instrument cluster) and PCM.

OIL CONSUMPTION EXCESSIVE

  1. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  2. Check for wrong dipstick.
  3. Check for incorrect engine oil viscosity.
  4. Check for engine internal part malfunction.

POOR FUEL ECONOMY

  1. Check for contaminated air filter.
  2. Check for engine cooling system malfunction.
  3. Check for incorrect transaxle or transmission fluid level (A/T).
  4. Check for weak spark from ignition system.
  5. Check for poor fuel quality.
  6. Check for erratic or no signal from CMP sensor.
  7. Check for clutch slippage (M/T).
  8. Check for improper operation of variable valve timing control system.
  9. Check for low coolant level.
  10. Check for inadequate fuel pressure malfunction.
  11. Check for spark plug malfunction.
  12. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  13. Check for dragging brakes.
  14. Check for improper valve timing due to jumping out of timing belt.
  15. Check for contaminated MAF sensor.
  16. Check for incorrect engine compression.
  17. Check for damaged trigger wheel on camshaft.
  18. Check for restricted exhaust system.

SLOW RETURN TO IDLE

  1. Check for ECT sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for thermostat malfunction (stuck open).
  3. Check for throttle body malfunction.
  4. Check for intake air system leak.

SPARK PLUG CONDITION

Note. Inspecting spark plug condition can determine whether problem is related to a specific cylinder or to all cylinders.

Wet/Carbon Is Stuck On Specific Plug

  1. Check for weak spark.
  2. Check for excessive fuel injection volume.
  3. Check for no or low compression.
  4. Check for faulty spark plug.

Grayish White With Specific Plug

  1. Check for insufficient fuel injection volume.
  2. Check for faulty spark plug.

Wet/Carbon Stuck On All Plugs

  1. Check for too rich air/fuel mixture.
  2. Check for low compression.
  3. Check for clogging in intake and exhaust systems.

Grayish White With All Plugs

  1. Check for too lean air/fuel mixture.

WILL NOT CRANK

  1. Check for open circuit between ignition switch and starter.
  2. Check for A/T range switch circuit malfunction.
  3. Check for misadjusted A/T range switch.
  4. Check for low or dead battery.
  5. Check for charging system malfunction.
  6. Check for start interlock switch malfunction (M/T).
  7. Check for starter malfunction.
  8. Check for burned fuse.
  9. Check for seized/hydro-locked engine, flywheel, or drive plate.
  10. Check for immobilizer system (PATS) and/or circuit malfunction

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent fault, use the following methods

  1. Lightly tap on or vibrate component.
  2. Wiggle, pull, shake or bend wiring harness.
  3. Using spray bottle, mist component with water.
  4. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit. Check for loose terminals or connections.
