Steering Wheel Removal Note

  1. Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position and remove the steering wheel using a suitable puller. CAUTION: Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.

Scheme 4: STEERING SHAFT DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY
  1. Disassemble in the order indicated in the table.
  2. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.

Scheme 5: Steering Lock Mounting Bolts and Bracket Disassembly Note
  1. Use a chisel to make a groove in the heads of the steering lock mounting bolts. Remove the bolts with a screwdriver. Remove the steering lock component.

  1. Install the steering lock component. Install the new steering lock mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts until the heads break off.

  1. Inspect the following, and replace the column component as necessary. Column bearing damage. Steering shaft length. Length 593.8-595.8 mm (23.38-23.45 in)

STEERING REAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

CAUTIONPerforming the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and fix it to an appropriate place where the sensor will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle.

  1. With the wheels in the straight-ahead position, remove in the order indicated in the table.
  2. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  3. Adjust the total toe-in.

  1. Separate the tie-rod end ball joint from the knuckle using the SST.
