Removal & Installation (B2300)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accelerator control splash shield. (Scheme 1)
  3. Disconnect Mass Airflow (MAF) harness connector. (Scheme 2)
  4. Disconnect the electrical harness push pins and the crankcase ventilation tube. (Scheme 3)
  5. Loosen the hose clamps, remove the bolt and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. (Scheme 71)
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).

  1. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube. (Scheme 4)
  2. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner outlet tube. (Scheme 5)
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. Unclip the throttle cable from the air cleaner outlet pipe. (Scheme 9)
  2. Loosen the screw clamp and disconnect the pipe. (Scheme 9)
  3. Disconnect the outlet pipe from the throttle body (1). (Scheme 10)
  4. Unclip the hose from the outlet pipe (2). (Scheme 10)
  5. Disconnect the crankcase vent tube and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe (3). (Scheme 10)
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). NOTE: The air cleaner outlet pipe should be securely sealed to prevent unmetered air from entering the engine.

Removal & Installation (Miata)

WARNINGHot engines and intake-air system can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until it and the intake air system are cool before removing the intake air system.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant from radiator. See appropriate COOLING SYSTEM - MECHANICAL article in ENGINES.
  3. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 17)
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). Install the intake manifold gasket with convex side of the gasket facing the intake manifold side. (Scheme 18) Install the dynamic chamber gasket with the convex side of the gasket facing the intake manifold side. (Scheme 19) Tighten the dynamic chamber bracket bolts firmly, then tighten the dynamic chamber side bolt before tightening the fuel distributor side bolt.

Removal & Installation (MPV)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 20) Remove the fuse box, battery, and battery tray before removing the fresh-air duct. Remove the front mudguard (LH) before removing the resonance chamber. Disconnect the fuel injector connector and fuel hoses before removing the fuel distributor. See «FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS»(ref-151901-S40619429102003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEMS.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). Tighten the intake manifold bolts in the order indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 15) Tighten the dynamic chamber bolts in the order indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 21)

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 22) Drain the engine coolant from the radiator before removing the throttle body. Remove the fuel injector before removing the intake manifold. See «FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS»(ref-151901-S40619429102003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEM.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). To install the dynamic chamber gasket, make sure that the convex side of the gasket is facing the intake manifold side. (Scheme 23) To install the intake manifold gasket, make sure that the convex side of the gasket is facing the intake manifold side. (Scheme 24)

Removal (B2300)

  1. Remove the accelerator control splash shield. (Scheme 1)
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE»(ref-151901-S32533760452003111000000).
  3. Disconnect accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) from the throttle linkage (1). (Scheme 25)
  4. Disconnect accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) from the mounting bracket (2). (Scheme 25)
  5. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor. (Scheme 73)
  6. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 26)
  7. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve harness connector. (Scheme 27)
  8. Disconnect the engine vacuum harness, brake booster hose and the crankcase breather hose. (Scheme 28)
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness and position it out of the way. (Scheme 29)
  10. Remove the electric EGR tube bracket bolt. (Scheme 30)
  11. Disconnect the swirl control valve harness connector. (Scheme 31)
  12. Disconnect the swirl control valve monitor harness connector. (Scheme 32)
  13. Disconnect the fuel line from the clip. (Scheme 33)
  14. Remove the bolts from the EGR tube flange. (Scheme 34)
  15. Detach the 42-pin harness connector from the bracket and disconnect the intake vacuum hose. (Scheme 35)
  16. Disconnect the engine Knock Sensor (KS) harness connector and disconnect the connector from the intake manifold. (Scheme 36)
  17. Remove the wiring harness push-pin from the bottom of the intake manifold.
  18. Disconnect the fuel manifold vacuum hose. (Scheme 37)
  19. Remove the 5 bolts and the intake manifold. (Scheme 38)

  1. Inspect and install new intake manifold gaskets, if necessary. (Scheme 39)
  2. Install the intake manifold and the 5 mounting bolts. (Scheme 38) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).
  3. Connect the fuel manifold vacuum hose. (Scheme 37)
  4. Connect the wiring push-pin to the bottom of the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the engine knock sensor harness connector to the intake manifold and connect the harness connector. (Scheme 36)
  6. Attach the 42-pin harness connector to the bracket and connect the intake vacuum hose. (Scheme 35)
  7. Install the EGR flange mounting bolts. (Scheme 34)
  8. Connect the fuel line into the clip. (Scheme 33)
  9. Connect the swirl control valve harness connector. (Scheme 31)
  10. Connect the swirl control valve monitor harness connector. (Scheme 32)
  11. Install the EGR tube bracket bolt. (Scheme 30)
  12. Position engine wiring harness and connect the push-pin. (Scheme 29)
  13. Connect the engine vacuum harness, brake booster hose and crankcase breather hose. (Scheme 28)
  14. Connect the vacuum hose and the IAC valve harness connector. (Scheme 27)
  15. Connect the MAP sensor harness connector. (Scheme 26)
  16. Connect the TP sensor. (Scheme 73)
  17. Connect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) into the mounting bracket.
  18. Connect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) onto the throttle linkage.
  19. Install the air cleaner outlet tube.
  20. Install the accelerator control splash shield. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve and the Throttle Position (TP) sensor harness connectors. (Scheme 40)
  4. Disconnect the accelerator and cruise control cables. (Scheme 82)
  5. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose. (Scheme 41)
  6. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose. (Scheme 42)
  7. Disconnect the right side spark plug wires from coil. Remove spark plug wire routing clip push-pin and position the wires aside. (Scheme 43)
  8. Remove wiring harness bracket retainer, then position wiring harness aside. (Scheme 44)
  9. Remove accelerator cable routing retainer clip and wiring harness push-pin. (Scheme 45)
  10. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts. (Scheme 46)
  11. Remove the bolt and position the coil and bracket aside. (Scheme 47)
  12. Disconnect the vacuum hoses. (Scheme 48)
  13. Remove the nut. (Scheme 49)
  14. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector. (Scheme 50)
  15. Disconnect the ground wires and position the wiring harness aside. (Scheme 51)
  16. Detach the harness connector retainer. (Scheme 52)
  17. Remove the intake manifold bolts and lift up the intake manifold. (Scheme 53)
  18. Remove the heated PCV hose retainers and remove the heated PCV fitting. (Scheme 54)
  19. Remove the intake manifold.

Removal (Tribute 2.0L)

WARNINGFuel supply lines will remain pressurized for long periods of time after engine shut down. This pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines or fuel system components to prevent possible injury. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE under FUEL SYSTEM. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Remove fuel rail and Injectors. See «FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS»(ref-151901-S40619429102003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEM.
  2. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 55)
  3. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) harness connector and unclip the harness from the bracket. (Scheme 56)
  4. Disconnect the main engine control sensor wiring. (Scheme 57) Remove the connector from the mounting bracket.
  5. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) wire harness from the bracket. (Scheme 58)
  6. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) wiring harness from the bracket. (Scheme 59)
  7. Remove the HO2S wiring harness retainer. (Scheme 60)
  8. Disconnect the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 61)
  9. Detach the CHT sensor wiring harness from the clip, and remove the clip. (Scheme 62)
  10. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum supply hose. (Scheme 63)
  11. Disconnect the 4 vacuum hoses. (Scheme 64)
  12. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) vacuum hose. (Scheme 65)
  13. Remove the alternator. See ALTERNATOR in appropriate CHARGING SYSTEM article in ELECTRICAL.
  14. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve bolts. (Scheme 66)
  15. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the 2 nuts and 5 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration. (Scheme 67)

  1. Inspect intake manifold gaskets. Install new intake manifold gaskets if damaged.
  2. Install the intake manifold and tighten in the sequence shown in illustration. (Scheme 68) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). NOTE: Illustration shown with the throttle body removed for clarity.
  3. The EGR valve sealing surfaces are soft metals. Carefully clean all sealing surfaces and install a new EGR valve gasket. Install the EGR valve bolts. (Scheme 69) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).
  4. Install the alternator. See ALTERNATOR in appropriate CHARGING SYSTEM article in ELECTRICAL.
  5. Connect the PCV vacuum hose. (Scheme 65)
  6. Connect the 4 vacuum hoses. (Scheme 64)
  7. Connect the brake booster vacuum supply hose to the intake manifold. (Scheme 63)
  8. Install the CHT sensor wiring clip and attach the CHT wiring harness. (Scheme 62)
  9. Connect the CHT sensor. (Scheme 61)
  10. Install the retainer for the HO2S wiring harness mount. (Scheme 60)
  11. Connect the HO2S sensor wiring harness to the bracket. (Scheme 59)
  12. Connect the PCM wire harness to the bracket. (Scheme 58)
  13. Connect the main engine control sensor wiring. (Scheme 57)
  14. Connect the IAC harness connector and reattach the harness to the bracket. (Scheme 56)

Installation (From Completely Disassembled State)

  1. Install NEW turbocharger to exhaust manifold gasket.
  2. Position turbocharger to exhaust manifold, install NEW nuts to studs. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  3. Install NEW turbine outlet gasket.
  4. Position turbo down pipe to turbocharger.
  5. Install turbocharger insulator. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  6. Install NEW nuts to studs. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  7. Install coolant return line at rear of turbo center section using NEW copper washers to banjo bolt.
  8. Install coolant feed line at front of turbo center section using NEW copper washers to banjo bolt.
  9. Install oil feed line to top of turbo center section.
  10. Attach line retaining clamp to secure oil feed line, water feed line and water return line.
  11. Install new "O" ring on to drain flange.
  12. Install flange retaining bolts and tighten.
  13. Install wastegate actuator rod and clip.
  14. Install NEW exhaust manifold gasket.
  15. Insert turbocharger coolant return line into return hose while positioning primary turbocharger assembly onto the exhaust manifold studs.
  16. Position EGR pipe to the exhaust manifold and hand tighten the EGR pipe nut.
  17. Install all exhaust manifold nuts and bolts. Tighten the fasteners in at least 2 steps using a center-to-outside circular pattern tightening sequence. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  18. Tighten EGR pipe nut.
  19. Install coolant feed hose and clamp.
  20. Position clamp over coolant return line connection.
  21. Route oil feed line to rear of engine.
  22. Attach oil feed line to retaining clip.
  23. Tighten oil feed line fitting to three-way tee adapter.
  24. Reinstall intake manifold brace.
  25. Reinstall turbo down pipe bracket and bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  26. Install oil drain block to oil pan upper block using NEW gasket.
  27. Install front pipe to turbo down pipe using NEW gasket. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  28. Position springs and nuts to catalyst pipe and install to front pipe. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  29. Install front pipe insulator. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000) .
  30. Install exhaust manifold insulator.
  31. Reconnect vacuum hose from the intake manifold vacuum port to the turbocharger wastegate actuator and position temporarily for air bypass valve. Install spring clumps at each hose connection points.
  32. Reinstall radiator with charge air cooler and cooling fan. Be sure that the harness connections to both cooling fans are properly connected. See «CHARGE AIR COOLER»(ref-151901-S40043164582003120300000) .
  33. Connect lower radiator hose.
  34. Remove any caps or taping from openings of the turbocharger compressor, charge air cooler and throttle body.
  35. Position duct onto charge air cooler bottom end-tank and the throttle body. Tighten clamps at each end.
  36. Secure fuel line to bracket on duct.
  37. Install purge solenoid valve body to duct using original nut.
  38. Position duct onto turbocharger compressor inlet and Mass Airflow (MAF). Tighten clamps at each end.
  39. Install valve cover breather hose onto duct.
  40. Secure Reverse light wire and fuel line to bracket on duct.
  41. Reconnect plug for Reverse light, if disconnected.
  42. Install front HO2S to exhaust manifold. Connect sensor to vehicle harness.
  43. Secure HO2S wire to retaining clip.
  44. Position duct onto turbocharger compressor outlet and charge air cooler top end-tank. Tighten clamps at each end.
  45. Install upper radiator hose.
  46. Position air bypass valve route between the ducts. Tighten clamp at the end of bypass connection.
  47. Connect vacuum hose from the intake manifold vacuum port to air bypass valve actuator. Install spring clamp to the vacuum hose connection.
  48. Reconnect MAT and MAF sensor, if disconnected.
  49. Close radiator drain plug and refill radiator. Fill with coolant to specified level and specified mixture ratio.
  50. Check oil level. Adjust level as necessary.
  51. Connect the negative battery cable.
  52. Remove INJ or FIP fuse and crank engine 10 seconds. Wait 30 seconds, and repeat until engine oil pressure warning light turns off.
  53. Start engine. Inspect for any leaks.
  54. Shut off engine and check engine oil level.

Removal (B3000)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the breather tube, loosen the clamp and position the air outlet tube aside. (Scheme 76)
  3. Remove the bolt and the splash shield. (Scheme 77)
  4. Disconnect the accelerator cable, speed control cable and return spring. (Scheme 79)
  5. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 78)

VID Block & As Built Data For A Replacement PCM

A new PCM will contain latest strategy and calibration level for a particular vehicle. However, VID block will be blank and will need programming. Two procedures are available: Automatic Data Transfer from old PCM to new PCM and As Built Data or Manual Data Entry into new PCM

  1. Automatic Data Transfer - performed if old PCM is capable of communicating. This is done by the use of a scan tool to retrieve data from old PCM before removing it from vehicle. Stored data can now be downloaded to new PCM after it has been replaced.
  2. As Built Data Or Manual Data Entry - must be performed if PCM is damaged and/or incapable of communicating. Remove and replace old PCM. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (B2300, B3000 & B4000)»(ref-151901-S01941267072003111000000) . Using scan tool, select and execute MODULE/PARAMETER REPROGRAMMING, referring to manufacturer user manual.

Make certain that all parameters are included

  1. Failure to properly program tire size in revolutions per mile, (rev/mile = 63,360 divided by the tire circumference in inches) axle ratio, axle size, ABS system (4WBS or RWABS) 4x4/4x2, and/or manual/ electronic shift on the fly (MSOF/ESOF) may result in DTCs P1635, P1639.
  2. You will need As Built Data to perform this procedure. If you are unable to obtain As Built Data from Mazda's Electronic Service Information website, you will need to contact Mazda Technical Assistance Hotline.

  1. Perform the following procedure so that piston No. 1 is at the top dead center. Remove the right driveshaft. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove the cylinder block lower blind plug and install the SST 49-JE01-061. (Scheme 163) Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until it stops.
  2. Using a straight edge, draw a straight line directly in the center of the 9th tooth of the crankshaft pulley pulse wheel (counting counterclockwise from the empty space). (Scheme 164)
  3. Align the center line of the crankshaft position sensor and the line drawn in step 2, then install the sensor.
  4. Install the CKP sensor bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).
  5. Remove SST (49-JE01-061) then install the cylinder block lower blind plug. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000).
  6. Install the right front driveshaft. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.

  6. Install fuel injector clips as follows: Lightly lubricate the injector groove and "O" ring. Pre-attach a new clip in the injector groove. When the clip is attached correctly, the central area of the injector and the clip finger positions are aligned. Hold the injector firmly, push the clip into the injector until the clip stops sliding. (Scheme 273) Verify that the injector harness connector position is correct, and press the injector and clip into the injector cup. Continue pressing until the clip contacts the lower surface of the injector cup. Verify that the injector and clip are correctly attached with the clip locked onto the injector cup notch.

WARNINGThe evaporative emission system contains fuel vapor and condensed fuel vapor. Although not present in large quantities, it still presents the danger of explosion or fire. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery to minimize the possibility of an electrical spark occurring, possibly causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or fuel liquid is present in the area. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister outlet tube. (Scheme 292)
  4. Disconnect the canister vent solenoid harness connector and the remote canister vent hose. (Scheme 293)
  5. Remove the EVAP canister bracket assembly. (Scheme 294)
  6. Remove the remote canister vent hose, dust separator and canister vent solenoid. (Scheme 295)
  7. Remove the EVAP canister outlet tube. (Scheme 296)
  8. Remove the EVAP canister. (Scheme 297)
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate all "O" ring seals with MERPOL® "O" Ring Seal Lubricant. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-151901-S31341501772003010900000). Check for leaks and carry out the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES in appropriate SELF DIAGNOSTICS article.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

  1. For the right side, perform the following procedure: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the plug hole plate. Remove the dynamic chamber. CAUTIONThe variable valve timing actuator camshaft sprocket is integrated with the variable valve timing actuator and cannot be disassembled.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove timing belt. See appropriate TIMING BELT article in ENGINES.
  3. Remove the variable valve timing actuator. (Scheme 305)
  4. Loosen the variable valve timing actuator bolt.

  2. Secure the camshaft sprocket in a vise using the Special Service Tool (49-1352-060). (Scheme 306)
  3. Loosen the variable valve timing actuator tightening bolt.
  4. Remove the variable valve timing actuator.
