Radiator and Cooling Fan Removal/Installation Note

  1. Pull the condenser forward to obtain clearance, and remove/install the radiator and cooling fan.

  1. Remove the battery and battery tray. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  2. Drain the engine coolant. (See «COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS»(ref-178034-S14417499622005061000000) .) See «ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(ref-178034-S22817698222005061000000) .)
  3. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Install the thermostat into the thermostat case with the jiggle pin at the top.

  1. Visually check that the thermostat valve is closed.
  2. Place the thermostat and a thermometer in water. WARNING: During inspection, the thermostat and water are extremely hot and they can badly burn. Do not touch the thermostat and water directly.
  3. Heat the water and check the following. If not as specified, replace the thermostat.

  1. Remove the battery and battery tray. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .

  3. Remove the water pump drive pulley. (See Water Pump Drive Belt Pulley Removal Note .)
  4. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
  5. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Water Pump Installation Note

  1. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque, then tighten them further 85°-95°.

Scheme 21: FAN CONTROL MODULE INSPECTION

  1. Remove the two bolts from the fan control module with the connectors still connected.
  2. Start and warm up the engine.
  3. Monitor the engine coolant temperature with the WDS or equivalent.
  4. Measure the voltage at the terminal B of cooling fan control module connector (2 terminals) from the harness side as shown in the table. If not as specified, replace the fan control module.

Scheme 23: COOLING FAN MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
  1. Place the vehicle on a two-post lift.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the radiator grille. (See FRONT BUMPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  4. Remove the transverse member and the engine mount member. (See ENGINE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  5. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration.
  6. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Scheme 24: COOLING FAN MOTOR INSPECTION
  1. Verify that the battery is fully charged. (See Battery ).
  2. Disconnect the fan control module connector (2 terminals.)
  3. Connect battery voltage and an ammeter to the fan control module connector on fan motor side (2 terminals).
  4. Perform the same procedure as step 2 for the condenser fan motor.
  5. Verify that the cooling fan motor operates smoothly at the standard current draw. If not as specified, replace the cooling fan motor. Standard Current 12.0-15.0 (A) [12 V]
