PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Note. Perform the following preliminary inspection before attempting any other diagnostic or trouble shooting procedure.

  1. Determine if installed system is an aftermarket system. If an aftermarket system is installed, refer to owner's aftermarket system manual for diagnostic procedure. If system is original equipment, go to next step.
  2. Determine if customer attempted to activate system while ignition switch was in ON position. Anti-theft/keyless entry system will only activate when ignition switch is in LOCK position. If malfunction occurred while ignition switch was in LOCK position, go to next step.
  3. Determine if customer experienced problems in a specific location, such as being near TV towers, power plant, power lines or factories. Outside interference from these sources may cause system to malfunction. If problem is not specific to a certain area, go to next step.
  4. Determine if any aftermarket equipment is installed on vehicle such as cellular phone, radio wave equipment, remote engine starter or TV. If aftermarket equipment is installed, disconnect it and try to operate anti-theft/keyless entry system. If anti-theft/keyless entry system now operates normally, inform customer that aftermarket equipment is interfering with anti-theft/keyless entry system operation. If system still does not operate normally, or if no aftermarket equipment is installed, go to next step.
  5. Perform system diagnostic function check. See «DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION CHECK»(ref-99375-S26455916482001071200000) . If system performed diagnostic function check as specified, go to next step. If system did not perform diagnostic function check as specified, go to step 7 .
  6. Attempt to reprogram keyless control module ID code. See «CHANGING KEYLESS CONTROL MODULE ID CODE»(ref-99375-S16952663572001071200000) under PROGRAMMING. If you were able to reprogram keyless control module ID code, system is operating normally at this time. If you were unable to reprogram keyless control module ID code, go to «TEST NO. 3: TRANSMITTER ID CODE CANNOT BE REPROGRAMMED»(ref-99375-S22441262902001071200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  7. While performing diagnostic function check, if any diagnostic functions worked, go to «TEST NO. 1: ONE OR MORE DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE»(ref-99375-S27384903302001071200000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If no diagnostic functions worked, go to «TEST NO. 2: ALL DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE»(ref-99375-S19603485462001071200000) under SYSTEM TESTS.

DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION CHECK (KEYLESS ENTRY)

  1. Remove key from ignition. Close all doors. Open driver's door. Go to next step.
  2. Complete this step within 30 seconds. Reinsert ignition key into ignition. Turn ignition switch to ON position, then back to LOCK position. Remove ignition key. Push driver's door lock switch 3 times. Repeat this step 3 more times. Go to next step.
  3. Confirm following responses occur, in order, within 7 seconds: All doors lock. Driver's door unlocks. All other doors unlock. Horn sounds and headlights flash twice while hazard lights flash. If all responses occurred as specified, diagnostic function is operating properly. Diagnosis is complete. If all responses did not occur as specified, perform appropriate system diagnosis. See «SYMPTOM TESTS»(ref-99375-S09274074362001071200000) .

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING (IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM)

For immobilizer system wiring diagram see scheme 49and see scheme 50 under WIRING DIAGRAMS.

CAUTIONWhen the engine does not start or stalls and the following DTCs are not indicated, go to engine symptom troubleshooting. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS .

Note. When the immobilizer system is defective, the engine starts once and soon stalls after turning the starter for the first three times. The engine cannot be started after the third time. If engine condition is normal but light stays on, inspect for continuity between the following wiring harness and body ground: security light and immobilizer unit terminal M. Repair or replace the wiring harness if necessary.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to START position for 2 seconds , then back to ON position.
  2. Wait for 2 minutes .
  3. Verify the security light condition and read the DTC if indicated.
  4. Verify the DTC with WDS set or equivalent.
  5. If the DTC is indicated, go to troubleshooting referring to the DTC table. See «DTC TABLE»(ref-99375-S36810512042006020700000) .

Scheme 1: Diagnostic Trouble Code Table

Note. Perform the following if the security light stays on: If gasoline engine stalls, go to symptom troubleshooting no. 11 "engine stalls/quits, engine runs rough, misses, buck/jerk, hesitation/stumble, surges". If gasoline engine wont start, go to symptom troubleshooting no. 6, "cranks normally but will not start". If engine condition is normal but light stays on, inspect for continuity between the following wiring harness and body ground: security light and immobilizer unit terminal "M".
