NOISY AFW ASSEMBLY

  1. Low Front Differential Fluid Level
  2. Wrong Fluid In Front Differential
  3. Worn Or Damaged Bearing
  4. Worn Spline On AFW Drive Hub
  5. Worn Joint Shaft
  6. Incorrect Shaft End Play
  7. Incorrect Gear End Play
  8. Worn Spline On Output Shaft

Reassembly

Using Oil Seal Installer (49-U027-007), press NEW oil seal into housing. Install control rod dust boot on housing. see scheme 2, see scheme 3 and see scheme 4. Position shift fork in housing and install control rod. Using a punch and hammer, install NEW roll pin into shift fork. (Scheme 9)-23. To complete reassembly, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure dust boot position is correct. (Scheme 9)-23.

  1. Lubricate NEW oil seal with differential oil. Using Installer (49-U027-006), install oil seal in differential side of housing. Using installer, install any shims removed during reassembly and install bearing in differential side of housing. Install retaining ring.
  2. Measure clearance between bearing and retaining ring. (Scheme 9)-23. Maximum allowable clearance is.006" (.15 mm). Maximum of 2 shims may be used. Adjust clearance by adding or removing shims. Shims are available in.006" (.15 mm),.012" (.30 mm),.014" (.35 mm),.016" (.40 mm) and.020" (.50 mm) sizes.
  3. Using Installer (49-U027-005), install bearing in drive axle side of housing. Install spacer on shaft on differential side of housing. Install free-wheeling hub onto shaft. Install NEW circlip.
  4. Measure clearance between circlip and free-wheeling hub. (Scheme 9)-23. Maximum allowable clearance is.006" (.15 mm). Maximum of 2 shims may be used. Adjust clearance by adding or removing shims. Shims are available in.006" (.15 mm),.012" (.30 mm),.014" (.35 mm),.016" (.40 mm) and.020" (.50 mm) sizes.
  5. Using Body (49-M005-796), install NEW dust seal in drive axle side of housing and install NEW circlip on shaft. Lubricate needle bearing with differential oil and install bearing on differential side of shaft. To complete reassembly, reverse disassembly procedure.
