Variable Inertia Charge System (VICS) Operation Inspection - Protege & Protege5

Note. Shutter valve actuator rod extends for 5 seconds after engine is started.

  1. Start engine, and let idle. Ensure VICS shutter valve actuator rod is pulled. (Scheme 95) If actuator rod is pulled, go to next step. If actuator rod is not pulled, check following: Loose or damaged vacuum hose or chamber. VICS shutter valve actuator. See «VICS SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S38357574382003010900000). VICS solenoid valve. See «VICS SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S01442347272003010900000). Repair or replace vacuum hoses or components as necessary.
  2. Inspect shutter valve rod operation. See «VICS SHUTTER VALVE ROD OPERATION (PROTEGE & PROTEGE5)»(ref-151892-S04244553522003010900000) table. If shutter valve rod operation is not as specified, check following: VICS shutter valve actuator. See «VICS SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S38357574382003010900000). VICS solenoid valve. See «VICS SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S01442347272003010900000). Repair or replace vacuum hoses or components as necessary.

Variable Tumble Control System (VTCS) Operation Inspection

  1. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Access ECT PID. Ensure ECT PID reading is between 145°F (63°C) and 152°F (67°C).
  2. Start engine. Inspect rod operation. See «VTCS SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR ROD OPERATION»(ref-151892-S14735062412003050700000) table. If rod operation is not as specified, check following: Ensure DTC P2009 or P2010 is not displayed. If DTC P2009 or P2010 is displayed, see appropriate DTC testing procedure under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - MAZDA6 2.3L article. Check VTCS solenoid valve. See «VTCS SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S33104896012003050700000) . If VTCS solenoid valve is faulty, replace VTCS control solenoid valve. If VTCS solenoid valve is okay, check following: Vacuum hose and vacuum chamber for looseness or damage. VTCS shutter valve actuator. See «VARIABLE TUMBLE CONTROL SYSTEM (VTCS) SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR INSPECTION»(ref-151892-S23744976282003050700000) . Check if VTCS shutter valve is stuck open or closed.

VTCS SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR ROD OPERATION

  1. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Access ECT PID. Ensure ECT is 149°F (65°C) or less. Start engine. VTCS shutter valve actuator rod should be pulled. If rod is pulled, go to next step. If rod is not pulled, inspect following: VTCS shutter valve actuator. VTCS delay valve. VTCS chamber. VTCS solenoid valve. Vacuum hoses. Wiring harness and connectors between PCM, VTCS solenoid valve and main relay. Repair or replace wiring harness or components as necessary. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Select RPM PID. Inspect VTCS shutter valve actuator rod operation. See «VTCS SHUTTER VALVE ROD OPERATION (MIATA, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5)»(ref-151892-S20626700502003010900000) table. If rod operation is not as specified, check following: VTCS shutter valve actuator VTCS delay valve VTCS chamber VTCS control solenoid valve Vacuum hoses Wire harness and connectors between PCM terminal No. 73, VTCS solenoid valve and main relay. Ignition Coil Operation Inspection - Miata, Protege & Protege5

Note. Use known good spark plugs and high-tension leads to test coils.

Note. Cylinders No. 1 and 2 and No. 3 and 4 are fired simultaneously.

  1. Remove ignition coils, spark plugs and high-tension leads. Connect all components (Scheme 96)
  2. Ensure spark plug produces a strong, Bluish spark when turning switch from off to on.

Spool Valve Operation

  1. Remove the Oil Control Valve (OCV). See «OIL CONTROL VALVE»(ref-151901-S16613050262003010900000) under VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article.
  2. Ensure spool valve (in OCV) is in maximum valve timing retard position. (Scheme 97) If not as specified, replace OCV.
  3. Ensure battery is fully charged. Charge battery if necessary.
  4. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between OCV terminals and ensure spool valve moves to maximum valve timing advance position. If OCV operation is not as specified, replace OCV. NOTE: When applying battery voltage between OCV terminals, connection can be either of following: Positive battery cable to terminal "A", negative battery cable to terminal "B". Positive battery cable to terminal "B" negative battery cable to terminal "A".
  5. Disconnect fused jumper wires and verify spool valve returns to maximum valve timing retard position. (Scheme 97) If OCV does not operate as specified, replace OCV.
