PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating charging system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. For fuse and/or relay identification (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Using Scan Tool
- Connect the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) or equivalent scan tool to the vehicle DLC-2 16-pin connector located in the driver compartment. (Scheme 3)
- Retrieve/clear the DTCs using the WDS. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are present, perform appropriate test under «ON-VEHICLE TESTS»(ref-166828-S42562234412004092900000).

BATTERY CONDITION TEST
Note. Failure to fully charge the battery before retesting may cause false readings.
- Verify the battery condition using the Battery Analyzer.
- If the meter reads GOOD BATTERY, return the battery to service.
- If the meter reads GOOD-RECHARGE, charge the battery and return to service.
- If the meter reads CHARGE & RETEST, fully charge the battery and retest.
- If the meter reads REPLACE BATTERY, install a new battery.
- If the meter reads BAD CELL-REPLACE, install a new battery.
